Nice! At 16:40, I have had pretty good success in slipping silicone tubing over the plier/vice grip jaws in preventing potential damage to sensitive surfaces. Mostly motorcycle front fork suspension components.

I pulled both struts on mine today to replace them and found I need bearings too. You may have taken more apart than you needed too. No need to compress spring to remove from car or to take brakes apart. Have an X drive model so maybe slightly different. I removed tie rod and loosened both lower arms and was able to pull them out.

Dont put your face over that strut with that flimsy spring compressor hold it. Dont put your toes under the wheel with no jack stand. You may save wheel face but lose your toe if the jack fails. That was a good idea removing the strut without removing the control arms

Have you used or seen the audi strut spreader socket on amazon. I think that is how they listed it. Its just a socket with an oval end, like a modified hex key or something. It looks like it would work pretty good for opening the gaps on that strut or the pinch bolt

I made one before, sometimes you can also use a 1/4 or 3/8 extension for that. I haven’t been compelled enough to buy one yet since all the manufacturers have different size gaps for the pinch, this bmw was rather large.

Take a old allen socket and grind the sides to make an oval .

Mr. Naptown Tuner, another silly question: Can I tow a VW with Haldex based AWD, Tiguan for example, on a dolly? I.e. rear wheels rolling... Or full bed or disconnect driveshaft from rear axle is a must? Thank you. Roman.

I believe you can but you’ll have to check with the owners manual, it might give specifics like mph limit or miles limit. I always feel best with all 4 off the ground or popping the driveshaft off the rear diff pinion, but I mostly have done real awd not Haldex

Ok. I really like the home made spring compressor. I have everything except the thread rod hooks. Home depot? Lowes? Amazon? Part number? What is commercially available is ALWAYS too big too thick and "in the way". I guess they don't want it break and kill you and be sued. I will make my own and take my risk.

They are hooks from a over the fenders top engine support bar. I could probably come up with a better design I just threw this one together

@@NaptownTuner Because jacks can fail and its good to have stands just in case. I know you weren't climbing under the car but I would still use them.

@@tenzinite in this case it wasn’t high enough for a stand and I didnt feel like lifting it very high off the ground. I was taking a risk on my Chinese floor jack but if I’m not under the car I do that a lot. Especially when it’s only a little bit off the ground, I would be really surprised if a floor jack could loose all of its pressure immediately and cause damage to the car but even if it did lose all the pressure it would fall back onto the lift pad of the jack itself.
