The vapour blaster does a great job. Looks like you have the older 40mm Bings. They never clean up as well as the later 32mm carbs from the monolevers which are the ones in this video. Even with blasting.

Beautiful work - proper craftsmanship, the like of which is a pleasure to find. I have just acquired a BMW R45 from the early 1980’s - the previous owner had struggled to get the carbs properly set up and had paid two separate garages a considerable amount of money to “fix” them. I think I’ve just found someone who could do the job properly! Daniel - if you’re reading this, I’d appreciate it if you could let me know how to get in touch and what a full strip down, clean and rebuild might cost? I’m in the UK near Oxford. Cheers, Jim.

Great Video. I understood all the procedures. I just would like to know how you peined the screws for the butterfly. They are ussaly secured by factory. Thanks again for a great video. Cheers, Manfred
@dannyk1d
@dannyk1d 3 жыл бұрын
They are usually, but not always peined by the factory. For this carb, they could be removed easily. In most cases, you need to file away the backs of the screws before you remove them so the shaft is not damaged. When you put in new screws, you can use strong loctite instead of peining which is fine. Or use needle nose pliers after instal to damage the ends of the threads to stop undoing.

Excellent video, I wasn’t bored once - that’s saying something! I was a bit intimidate to get my R65 carbs ripped apart and rebuilt but after watching this I’m very confident I can pull this off. Now to find someone to blast them here in west Texas… Why do you not recommend removing the butterfly plate? I’d like to do a complete rebuild as you did here since the damned thing is 37 years old.
@dannyk1d
@dannyk1d 2 жыл бұрын
Only because it is a tricky job, but necessary for a full rebuild. I have another video on here which shows the process for removing the butterflies safely. It’s worth using a scribe or similar to mark the butterfly where the shaft runs through it before removing as a guide to help get the right position when you re instal. If that makes sense.

I am re building 6 carburettors for someone at the moment and planning on uploading a video on common issues with dismantling and rebuilding. Hopefully that can help some people at home.

Great job Bing carbs always scared me .Trouble is no matter which manual I look at its always simpler to it in video and colour.Are the vapour blast kits a DIY option ?, or is this an Industrial unit ? . Can you buy them that are capable for home use?You clearly know what you are doing.My bike a R100rt has being playing up so would like to replicate what you have shown thank you,Richard
@dannyk1d
@dannyk1d 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Richard. When you get down to it, carbs are very simple, just nut and bolt technology. But there's so much going on in there, it can be an intimidating job. Vapour blasters are mainly industrial costing many thousands. Mine is a small unit, but still expensive. I have seen a few people make diy versions from sand blast cabinets but I can't imagine they work properly. Are you in the UK? If want to tackle the rebuild yourself using the video as a guide, I can blast the carbs for you. You'll end up with the same end result as I've shown here. Dan

@@dannyk1d Hi Daniel, Thank you for the offer. That would be a great help.I live in Arbroath ,Scotland.Apologies this is a little long winded......Deep breath...... In a nutshell, I have a dilemma . I have spent a shed load of money on repairing a BMW R100RT. It has 32mm Bing carbs. Its registered in 1993.It was a non runner and has taken forever, but is now MOT'd, Taxed, and Insured.It has cut out twice at speed in the dark with a near tragic result but for my quick thinking ,getting it off a busy road fast in the dark. The carbs have only had a fuel additive through them and a quick gentle brush through of some of the jets by a local Mechanic with whom I have now lost faith in. The Mechanic asked me to order from Motorwerks ,in Holmfirth a float assembly x2 float jets x2 and diaghrams , " o" rings, and a basic vacuum carburater overhaul kit . The Mechanic has asked for these items without a cusery check . He is not familier with Bings, or Bikes from this" era " mine being 27 years old ! Finally this week if he is unable to get it running correctly I had planned on a complete strip down which is daunting because I am not familier with the process. So it would be of great help if after he has tinkered again with no result to have them Vapour Blasted.May I message you again if it is a complete non starter? I do not wish to trouble you but starting with a clean page has to be the way to go,Regards ,Richard Allan.
@dannyk1d
@dannyk1d 3 жыл бұрын
@@richardallan455 Hi Richard. I would always order the full rebuild kit (gaskets, o rings & diaphragm) to rebuild under almost all circumstances, so he's right there. Can't comment on the floats or float needle without inspection. There are plenty of hidden passages and easily blocked jets, along with multiple reasons the carbs may not perform properly. Worn slide needle, torn diaphragm, incorrect mixture settings etc etc. A complete strip, vapour blast and rebuild, replacing anything damaged will basically make the carb the same as the day it left the factory. Then just a quick balancing job when they are back on the bike and all should be well, assuming the bike is healthy in all other departments. By all means get in touch if you are still struggling with it. We can discuss at the time what you'd like me to do based on how far along the job already is. I can do anything from a simple blast of the stripped carbs or the complete strip and rebuild, replacing anything that needs it. Daniel

@@dannyk1d Thank you for your helpful response , alot of good pointers if its Carb related .I shall read my Clymer manual till it sinks in. Then I shall see if I can at least check the diaphrams.Although your video is from a different bike there will be similar approaches and your video has been a godsend.Tonight I have a trailer pick up arranged for the weekend so my bike will be back at my home after 6 months of mickey mouse cack handed chancers who had failed on many fronts.Getting it clean is a priority what part of the Country are you based?
@dannyk1d
@dannyk1d 3 жыл бұрын
Richard Allan The carb in the video is from a R80RT, they should be the same as yours, even minor changes over model years kept the carbs pretty similar. I’m in Brighton, so postage would be the best option to get them to me. Like I said, see how you get on when you get the bike back and I’ll happily get them sorted for you if you’re still having no joy.
