BMW N57 Timing Chain Cover, Oil Pump, Oil Pan, Valve Cover, Crankshaft Seal, Water Pump Installation

After the change of the crankshaft main bearings, it is time to continue with the assembly of the rest of the engine. In this video, we going to close up the engine. By that I mean, we going to install back together the timing chain cover, the oil pan, the valve cover, the front crankshaft seal + the crankshaft pulley, the water pump + all the plastic coolant flanges.

I carefully tap the new crankshaft seal into the cover when the cover is off, just enough so it starts to go in, then I carefully tap it out again and when you fit the cover and install the seal it goes in really easily. Otherwise they can be a real pain in the neck!

Should I change the oil pump when I replace all the chains? The previous owner of my car changed all the chains but not the oil pump...

Thank you for the very informative video. I have a 2014 535d with the N57 engine and there is a noise coming from the engine that sounds like a helicopter.. turns out it is the intake crankshaft. BMW diagnostic came back with the intake camshaft being scored and needing replacement along with cam carrier and rockers on cylinder 3, it also turns out that the amount of money they want for the repair is almost as much as the car is worth... Im pretty handy and i wouldn't mind taking the job on but wanted to know if you had any videos on doing this type of job? You are very thorough and informative. Car is pretty awesome i love it.. Please advise if its worth the to repair or sell as is. Thank You!

I see you know this engine well... I was pushing my engine a little bit this week and suddenly there was noise, then the oil pressure light went on and i had a verry hard brake pedal. Also the car lost power so it must have gone into safe mode. First i thought it was the turbo but the turbo looks not that bad. so could it be the oilpump that had failed ? And what does that have to do with the vacuum from the brake pedal ? Thanks !!

This type of engine n57A using oil pan gasket, and timing chain cover gasket. I see you use a silicone in the place of timing chain cover gasket like in n57C. Have you never had any problems with it? So can silicone be used in place of the oil pan gasket as well as in a newer engine?

I will never put a sillicone instead of a gasket. This engine didn't had a gasket on the cover, so I didn't put a gasket there.

Hi great vid! Did you miss the torque spec for the oil pump sprocket? Didnt see it anywhere I think…

Also would you recommend putting thread locker on the bolt if theres a risk of it coming loose?

@@houseofcars6998 No I just didn't torque it, because the new oil pump comes with torqued sprocket bolt already. The torque is 5 Nm + 50 degrees, thread locker should not harm anything, so it is not a bad idea to be applied. First just degrease good as possible the threads on the bolt and inside the pump

Do you only use silicone seal for the timing chain cover or do you also install a gasket? Just did mine and I have some oil leak between the cover and the oil pan above the starter engine. Both oil pan and timing chain cover have new gaskets 🤔 Need to reopen and investigate.

Check you valve cover on the rear corner (exhaust side)

Yes, but do you use both gasket and silicone or only silicone? Mine was mounted with gasket from factory. @@crank3646
