This might be a year late, but it might help someone in the future. Your timing was correct before disassembly. I ran into the same problem. What nobody mentions anywhere except a single thread on M3cutters forum is: when the engine is shut off, the VANOS retards the position of the exhaust camshaft to a fully closed (clockwise position). This is done to make the engine start easier on next ignition. If you want to check the timing you have to remove the front cover of the exhaust camshaft on the VANOS unit (held by 3 bolts) and this will release the oil pressure. Then you take a 24mm open ended wrench and manually return the exhaust camshaft to a fully open position. This means pulling it counter-clockwise or towards yourself if you are hanging over the right side of the car (passanger side for US/EU and driver side for UK/Japan). It takes quite a bit of force but you will see the alignment hole on the exhaust camshaft come into the vertical position and you will be able to push the alignment pin through it. Also, the eBay tools are not the best and the original isn't too expensive at 130-150 EUR. I bought both of them and compared, even the alignment pins are 0.2mm off on the ebay ones and the lower parts that sit on the head are nowhere near flat. VANOS can compensate for slight misaligment but better to use the original tool. Also, BMW manual says to never push both pins in. The way to do it is push through one hole, pull out and then push through another. I guess this is because of possible seazing due to chain tension etc. Also, once you return the exhaust cam - turning the engine CW has to be done for another rotation (two) in order for the chain tension/slap from rotating in the opposite direction not to affect your timing.

Yes I got this, when I started experimenting with timing of the engine. The other double vanos engines like M54 is not like that, which got me confused for a long time. But after a lot of investigating I saw, that this is how it works. Especially after I have done several more S54 after that. They can't be all out of timing right :D

Interesting video :), you said at 2:23 that "the valves are bending", did you mean that the valve cover is bent? (distorted would be the right word btw :) ). Btw at 4:42 , I'm not seeing any copper being exposed in that bearing, is the camera not picking it up? Or did you mean tin/aluminium exposed?
@crank3646
@crank3646 8 күн бұрын
Yes my mistake I mean the rocker/valve cover. It is not a secret that my English is far away from fluent. If you look closer you will see that some of the bearings has black exposure and the one that I'm showing has gone after that and you can see the small cooper coloring.
@Assimilator1
@Assimilator1 8 күн бұрын
@@crank3646 No worries, you're English is pretty decent actually, if a rather strong accent😉, I just wanted to be sure we were talking about the right item. I can't see any copper on bearing no3, perhaps the camera simply didn't capture that. I do see the blackness on the end bearing quite easily though. Amazing how good the rod bearings are!
@Assimilator1
@Assimilator1 Күн бұрын
@@crank3646 Oh btw, I forgot to say, I've noticed that for BMW's S65 engine that their later bearings (tin/aluminium ones) quite often get darkened too. But on at least some of them that is only light surface wear+discolouration. I and a few others have rubbed down some shells in the dark patch and it reveals that the babbitt (embedding/protective) layer actually isn't worn through (if you want to see photos of that, Google m3post forum and check out this thread - "Volunteers wanted for a simple experiment on your old tin/alu rod bearing(s)" , YT doesn't let us post full links 😛), that might be the case too with the bearings you saw in this engine. If so, then they would've had plenty more life, good to see them in such good shape at that mileage 🙂

Wow! They were very lucky it didn't jump any teeth! I've got to change the chains etc on my e90 2010 330d (manual, RWD), and I'm also looking at taking the gearbox out and not the engine. (I work in a garage, so my car will be on a lift). Are their any major disadvantages to doing it that way?

If the vibration is in multiple gears but at the same rpm range you would think it is an issue with the input side of the gearbox. Wheel bearings can be measured with a dial indicator. But wheel bearings increase speed with the speed of the car no matter what gear you are in. I would look at the adaptations in the trans and see if you see anything there. The B clutch is input for higher gears.
@crank3646

Thanks for the ideas! I didn't mean that the wheel bearing can cause this, I just said that the tool can help to diagnose a bad wheel bearing if there is a wailing noise coming from somewhere.

At 33:42 i checked the OEM code of one the bearings (11218471805), it was a yellow 55mm. Can you tell me why you took yellow 55mm and not 54,75mm ? I’m confused because a color can have 3 different sizes (55; 54,75; 54,5). Can you tell us according to the color how should we order the correct size ? Many thanks

Hi, I wached your videos about those engines. As I saw you're using oem main bearings by bmw specifications (yelow green white, depend on engine block and crankshat numbers). Have you ever used kolbensmidth or some other brand for main bearings? If there is no wear on conrod bearing do I have to change them. Are you changing bolts on conrods and use original or aftermarket bolts? I'm working on my n57 230kw engine and wanted to change everything that could go wrong on this engine.

hi. This is South Korea. My car is F10 550d, and a new engine was installed at BMW service center 3 years ago due to a load bearing failure at 140k km. The cost is very expensive. I am worried that it will happen again. Is the oil pump likely to be the cause of the load bearing failure? So, do you recommend replacing a new oil pump after driving 200k?

F10/11 are both really nice cars for me. but the N57 is a risky engine. M57 can endure a lot of terror and with a very nice power the chip can withstand a lot. I worked very similarly on Audi, the biggest work was about electricity and coding. I think the F10 with the M57 engine would be a top car.
