Avoid buying a cheap broken BMW X5 SUV or, as BMW called it, an SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle), and find the E70 BMW X5 or E71 BMW X6 problems and reliability issues before you buy. The BMW E70 can be a reliable choice of car if you know what problems to look for and which engine to buy. Avoid the mistakes of buying the cheapest broken BMW X5 as a project and attempting to fix the BMW E70 X5 due to its biggest problems of valve stem failure, Vanos unit failure, blown turbos, or oil leaks with our review. We highlight the facelift differences between the early E70 BMW X5 and later models as well as the E71 BMW X6. This buyer's guide covers the E70 BMW X5 and E71 BMW to help you buy one for the right price. The BMW X5 review covers model years from 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and the 2014 production year for the E71 BMW X5.
If you are deciding between the E70 BMW X5 or are an owner looking for a guide, but considering other vehicles, like the Range Rover then why not check out this video and others from our channel. The issues discussed in our buyer's guide to the E70 BMW X5 include timing chain stretch, faulty tailgate failure, and door handle mechanisms, which we review so you can find out what model has the biggest problems. Along with the links to the L405 Range Rover and L494 Range Rover Sport.

I bought a 2011 e870 3 years ago at 112k, currently at 136k, 3 liter n55 engine. Never taken it to a dealership, I got a local shop that only does BMW's, they won't work on any other car. That's the first thing to consider, I wouldn't have bought an older high mileage BMW if I had to take it to the dealership for work. The video hit the nail on the head, one of the first things at the 2:00 mark he talks about faulty electrical Mine had jacked up electrical when I bought it, and I didn't realize it. I noticed after a month or so, 5% of the time the wipers didn't work, and it gradually worsened until I couldn't ignore the problem. $1400 to fix the electrical. In year two of ownership, I had coolant leaks and the keyfob battery died. Needed a new coolant tank, hoses and stuff, and the keyfob battery isn't replaceable so had to buy a new one for $160 - which was way cheaper than I actually expected. Year 3, coolant leaks again, but just had to replaces some hoses and stuff, and some other misc minor things. All things considered; repairs, inspections, oil changes, etc., i'm averaging about $1300 a year, probably, to keep it on the road. It needed towed twice; once for a flat (I was literally on my way to get 4 new tires! So I was just like fuck it, let AAA get it over there), and again when it couldn't hold coolant. My BMW shop is in high demand, you gotta schedule like 3 months out, so I says to them, "how about I just drop it off for ya, and ya can take a look whenever you get time, maybe if someone cancels on ya, no rush" and they had me fixed up within a week each time. No regrets. I really bought it with very little forethought; I was actually looking for a 4Runner but they hold their value too damn well. It's not the most economical car I ever owned, but it's by far my favorite (I've owned VW, Saab, Volvo, Infiniti, and a Buick in the past). It's a special vehicle that's worth putting those maintenance fees into.

$160 for a key fob sounds great. The BMW salesman I bought my used 2013 e70 from told me they’re around $400. Fortunately, mine came with two keys

I’ve had a 2009 X5 4.8 Motorsport for 6 years now. Done 98kms and still runs perfectly. All electrics, lights mirrors, roof etc work as they should. The usual problems with these are valve stem seals, PCV valves and hoses that tend to get brittle over time. The 20” Dunlop Sport Maxx tyres are excellent but not cheap. These are quality vehicles but you do need to look after them, and keep servicing up. Will probably replace soon with the X3 M40i but will enjoy that V8 while I can…….👍

The rear suspension airbags has still been an issue even for the F15 model. Is there any solution for it such as swapping it to a normal suspension for instance or a permanent fix ?

Hi thanks for the video. Might I ask you a couple questions? I’m between a second and third gen x5 diesel in the USA. very informative. Is one more reliable or having more problems with the emissions stuff? Is one gen easier to delete and tune than the other? Thanks. Jon
@themilesdriven
@themilesdriven Жыл бұрын
Hi Jon, it looks like the only option will be a 35d model on either second or third gen for you. In the interest of being thorough here is an answer in 3 parts. 1. Yes the motors themselves (block and turbos) are fairly resilient on both. The main concern is cam chain stretch, we would suggest asking your mechanic to listen and visually inspect (as best they can) each year. 2. Both generations are using complex engine management systems to retain emissions standards, any hardware modification/removal would almost certainly need software tuning. 3. Having spent time in Canada and the U.S the big issue seems to be a lack of knowledge on complex passenger vehicle diesel engines. There are certainly lots of great truck mechanics that specialise in diesel in N.America (especially on the home market stuff) but far fewer that work on European diesel motors. Do you live near a specialist that can maintain these cars? If not any savings in fuel compared to a 3.0 gas motor may be lost. Also note that running an additive in the fuel tank to raise the cetane rating every few tanks can help to keep carbon build up in areas like the EGR reduced but we don't know BMW's official line on using this on the American specification engines. I believe Millers do a product for this over in the U.S 👍 In Europe we can also buy 'super' or 'premium' diesel at the pump but I can't remember ever seeing this over in the USA. As ever this information is our opinion and shouldn't be used in place of a professional inspection, without standing in front of a potential purchase with you it is impossible to give anything more than general advice but we hope this helped

Hi, when you say the larger thrust arm can give problems with that shake? Could you specify which one? Thanks Matt
@themilesdriven
@themilesdriven 10 ай бұрын
Hi Matt, it is the larger of the two lower control arms and has a noticeable bend on the outer portion that contains the ball joint. It is the inner bearing that generally fails rather than any failure of the arm itself, many owners seem to just replace the whole arm as the labour cost or pressing out this inner bearing can be quite expensive depending on the local labour rate in your area 👍

I'm thinking of buying an e53 or e70. I'm researching which engine is healthier, but it seems that all of them have problems. So what's your suggestion?
@themilesdriven
@themilesdriven Жыл бұрын
Tough one. The E53 engines are likely to be more reliable and need less maintenance (except the V8) but the cars are older and so may need more money spending on age related issues, particularly suspension and rear sub frame. We have a guide on the E53 X5 that is worth checking out to help you decide 👍 the E70 also has more modern technology and is available in a wider range of trims, for example 7 seats, or the M model
@eddy45686
@eddy45686 Жыл бұрын
@@themilesdriven I would choose the E70 as it has less issues than e53. Most issues are sorted. Do go for M57 engines either 3.0d or 35sd. Avoid n57 although I have the 40d it’s low mileage but I change oil 6 mths. Do 2-3k miles year. All will have EGR dpf issues so consider deletes.

@@k9cfc lucky you it will last you forever if you take care of it. The M57 is one of the best diesel engines BMW made and all the components in the engine are solid. The cheap out on the newer n57 n47. Then back to solid engines with the B58 out of my range just yet.
