I think the Pringles are a metaphor for goals that he can't reach. He points out how the audience can't reach their goals too. They think they can, but he knows they can't. Then he looks to the sky talking to "Pringle " about how most people's complain about how hard goals are to achieve. Then he finishes with how he wants to have a daughter so that there would finally be someone around the house who can reach the goals he couldn't..

But he's said in numerous interviews this was just a huge exaggeration for the purpose of comedy and that he found it amusing that people read so much into it.

Andrey Krichevsky well I think its not about what the artist wanted to express with it. If you see something bigger or something else in it that doesnt make it less true just not what the artist intended. So i dont know about overanalyzing. I think its just what you get out of it versus what someone else gets out of it.

I mean, it's really easy to see why people would draw that line, Bo has expressed similar annoyances before. Same with the chipotle part, Bo not knowing that all of the weight of being "famous" would overwhelm him and put him into a state of depression (due to being overloaded, aka the ingredients). He got greedy and wanted happiness, fame, to perform comedy, be seen in the public eye etc. but he didn't realise that it wasn't possible for him beforehand, and wishes someone told him. He's expressed very similar thoughts, and it's strange how perfectly it falls into this chipotle example. It's crazy if he actually didn't mean to do that.

I'm guessing you understand that it's not just the Pringles can or the burrito that is the metaphor in Bo's song. It's everything from the lights to the auto-tune. The auto-tune of course is to demonstrate how superficial show business is. And the lights like at 11:02, with him silhouetted, singing generic lines as if he is just another carbon copy of the next performer with no real identity. You could watch this video over 2 dozen times (and I have) and extrapolate different hidden meanings and possible layers to his whole performance. Bo really is something special. Let us all hope he can get his mental state in good order (with the success of his movie 8th Grade, he is off to a good start.) and maybe just maybe he will grace the stage once again.
@tabsmag

jeremybr2020 very late comment but yeah, on that silhouette part I saw an interesting comparison to how when he’s singing the very generic lines for the sake of comedy he’s only a shadow of his real self.
@jeremybr2020
@jeremybr2020 3 жыл бұрын
@@tabsmag It's unfortunate that he later stated in an interview that the burrito and Pringles thing was only meant to be funny and he hadn't intended for it to have any underlying meaning to it. While that's a little disappointing to be sure, I still don't think that takes away from his overall comic genius in any way. I was actually floored yesterday when I discovered that Bo is co-starring in a movie called "Promising Young Woman", which looked pretty interesting. So I'm glad he's still out there putting forth his talents in one fashion or another.

@@jeremybr2020 I think part of the reason that the Pringle and burrito things were thought to be metaphors were that this was the last song he performed, until the new special. There was that mental, was he trying to send a message about his mental health kind of thing.
@jeremybr2020
@jeremybr2020 3 жыл бұрын
@@noahbohl2127 To be perfectly honest, the fact that it was his last song before doing the current special is a non sequitur in terms of the misinterpretation by the fans of Bo and that song. I think people thought it was a metaphor because Bo Burnham is such a clever writer. Bo comes off as someone very intellectual and deeply introspective. And because of Bo's current state of mind over the last few years, we just assumed that there was hidden meaning in a song that goes from silly to very powerful. But unfortunately according to Bo, there was no hidden meaning, and he was simply trying to be silly with those 2 examples. Part of me would like to think that maybe its the case that Bo did this subconsciously, not realizing himself that those 2 examples would fit so well as a metaphor to what was going on in Bo's head at the time. But that is just speculation at best and wishful thinking.

iv'e heard and readc a lot of interpretations of this songs trying to analyze the borito and pringle cans as methaphores, and i actually think this song works better whith the first two parts just being silly meaningless jokes that only get meaningfull in the final parts when you realise they are actually being used to cover actual problems that we dont wont to see because they would ruin our entertainment. that way the irony in the transition from "i probably should shut up and do my job" to "i wouldn't have got the lettuce" stings much deeper in my opinion

I think what I like most about this song is how the verses have a gradient to how allegorical or literally they can be taken. For instance, I think most theories about the pringles verse are reaching a bit, but I think somewhere halfway through the burrito part it starts to become more meaningful, almost as if you have a friend trying to joke about their bad day and then devolving into a more emotional mindset and they begin to hint at what the real problem is that's going on in their life... if that makes any sense.
@kuroi1995

I like this about a lot of Bo's more meaningful songs like "we think we know you" and "from god's perspective," that there's kind of a gradient from lighthearted to serious and it really makes the second (and usually more meaningful half) of the performance that much more impactful as you realize that there's a lot more below the surface (whether it's the surface of the problem he's talking about, or himself).

Lotta people don’t know it, but his ending “Thank you, I hope you’re happy.” was a goodbye, in a way. His face looks sad, his demeanor as he dropped the mic just seemed like he was tossing out down, giving up. He’d made it clear how this was too much, he couldn’t handle it, and he wouldn’t have gotten into it if he’d known it would be like this. He’s still working on solo stuff, but he hasn’t really done much in the way of comedy since.

The best answer I've seen for the pringles can metaphor is that he reaching for happiness but can't grasp it because the path is too narrow and he can't fit, which leads to the next part about the daughter he hopes to have which he hopes will allow him to finally attain that happiness that he is currently unable to grasp.
@mr.morronic2099

For me, I feel like the Pringles are a metaphor for reaching his happinness. Like, he can only reach part of his happinness, but the rest he isn't able to reach, and he thinks that having a daughter might help him reach that happinness. The burrito "theory" you had was pretty spot on for me. In my opinion, I feel like it's a metaphor for the industry. Like, he thought he was going to be able to handle the fame, because when he was younger his head was really high up in fame and when he was a teenager he started writing songs and that's when he reached fame. He thought he would be able to handle it but as time passed he started getting more and more stressed out, causing the burrito to spill some of the ingredients. I think that's what it means by "No one wants a messy burrito." No one wants to be stressed out. He thought he'd be able to handle the pain. At the end part when the lights were going crazy, the lights were supposed to turn their attention away from Bo because he didn't want the fame anymore. I think. Also: "I should probably just shut up and do my job," probably means that he thinks it's his job to make people happy, and that no one really wants the deep and depressing stuff. "Laugh as he attempts to give you what he cannot give himself." He means that by saying he's trying to give you happinness even though he can't give himself the happinness. "Thank you, Good night, I hope you're happy." That line hit me the most tbh. It was like there's the unsaid words "because I'm not." The show is called Make Happy, if you didn't know.

The Pringle’s can is a metaphor for his childhood and how it is no longer accessible to him. Same as everyone else in the audience. When you were a child, you could fit your hand inside of a Pringle’s can. And now that you cannot it’s frustrating, the same way it’s frustrating that we can never go back and cherish those years of our life. That part of the reason he wants to have a daughter. It’s will help him to get back in touch with his inner child and live another childhood vicariously through her and in the ways he creates her childhood. “So I can finally have someone around the house who can fit their hand inside a Pringle’s can”

Yours is probably the first reaction video I've seen on KZfaq that is willing to formulate a genuine opinion on the fly, share it with an audience, and go back in the video to rewatch an important part. Liked and subbed. At 10:50 when he reprises the burrito part, the orange backlighting gives him a silhouette and reminds me of Plato's allegory of the cave. Bo should get so experimental that he tanks his career deliberately. That will space out the true fans from the hangers-on. Show less.

Pringles are a symbolism as happiness. He can't reach it, and he can't wait to have someone around who can help him reach it (a daughter). The burrito is about his work life and how it was going fine but then it was too much and no one warned him and he doesn't want it anymore.

Good Job on this! Best Reaction/Analysis of someone who watched it his first time I've seen on youtube so far. Most of them just go: "alright that was fun, hope you enjoyed, leave a like, bye". You got all the mandatory messages out of it on the first go and gave your view on it. Nice one. For my part: I think the pringles thing complements the burrito story. I think its about him trying to reach for his goal (bottom of pringles can). Then when he finally has the breaking point (turning it upside down) all of it just crumbles all over him making a big mess. So thats him saying he cant handle all the shit that suddenly went over him, so it just overwhelmed him. The burrito story, like you already explained, suites well with this because hes saying if he knew at the beginning what problems and tasks he has to manage, he wouldnt even have started pursuing that goal. Also him taking a break after that performance seems to confirm this assertion. Hope you could follow me, im not a native speaker ;)

I think the song becomes more powerful the more you know about its "backgrounds". Like, most importantly to know, it would be to have heard him talking before the song, where he explains that he would never ever recommend anyone to perform; if you have the chance to live your life without an audience, do it. And also powerful: The fact that this was the last song he performed before he quit his job says a lot about what he is actually talking about; that this song is, in fact, about his career. I think the fact that he basically plain out said: "This job sucks and does not make me happy", and then just... quit, says a lot about how strong of a person he is. Because we humans usually try to stay in the comfort of what we know, even if it does more damage than good. Because we're afraid of the unknown. Afraid of change. How many people managed to get famous, rich, known, but were unhappy, only to spiral down a path of self-destruction, leading to drug addictions, suicide, etc.? You need to be really ducking strong to let go of this form of comfort and safety and security, and that's just something I really admire about Bo.

most people don't know. this is Bo Burnham's swan song. everything in this is either a metaphor for his career or the blunt truth to his fans. He had a Justin Beiber like rise to fame and started to melt down. this was his creative answer to it. the song after it in the show is Are You Happy and done with no audience. look it up. he's saying goodbye. it was a comedy show but he was also just saying goodbye at the end and spouting truth and letting it all go. re watch it. knowing he's ending it all. he now directs amazing movies. he has done a couple things on stage since but will never return. it was too painful. watch his show again or for the first time as a goodbye.

This whole song is a metaphor; The Chipotle bit falls into the theme of 'not handling this.' The burrito (meaning fame) resembles how he thought it would be the best thing ever, but once he achieved it, it wasn't everything he wanted it to be. Quoting Pitbull here; 'The grass always looks greener, til you get to the other side...' Yea... SUPER HEAVY STUFF :)

I think the best interpretation of the pringles bit that I have heard is that the chips are meant to symbolize the happiness that he wants to reach. it would follow how he claims "you think you can, I know you can't" and screaming up to the sky to the company about the complaints they get. its just meant to show that no one can get to the happiness they want and he blames God for making it so difficult to reach for that happiness. it would also make sense when he brings up wanting a daughter because she could reach for the happiness that he never could alone. and finally when he brings up tipping the can back to try and get the chips it just falls in his face. super complex metaphor that should be brought up in schools. at least in my opinion and to older audiences.

The pringles can thing is about reaching for happiness I think, the comedy special is called make happy and it just makes sense to me. "I can get my hand like 4 inches into the can" then something about having to tilt the can and then crumbs come spilling onto his face. To me thats about how you can get close to happiness or you can get a little bit of happiness but you can never just HAVE it or just BE it. The crumbs part to me....not as sure? maybe its about how when you try to FORCE happiness it just falls apart or maybe its about how when you reach so much at a certain point thats all thats left, crumbs. Again not sure about that but thats just my take on it.

I think the pringle can and burrito are contrasting to each other, the pringle can being that he has big 'hands' and wants to take more out of life (the pringle can) than he is currently able and wants bigger things, but with the burrito he already has too much on his plate which he realises he doesn't want after already getting them, which is why he says he wouldn't have got them if he knew they wouldn't fit. I think he wants more out of his life but his hands are already too full and he is too concerned with things that he doesn't want to be doing, I think this makes sense because he is moving out of stand up which he maybe he realised he didn't want to do after already living the life, therefore moving onto bigger things. idk tbh i just made this up but the more i typed the more it made sense lol.

The pringles to me symbolizes him not being able to reach his happiness/goals and thinkin that having kids will make him happy or that the kids will be able to accomplish the things he wasnt able to. The burrito to me represents all the stuff that got handed to him very quickly at a young age/wanting to keep all his feelings inside and so on and so forth Hence the burrito being to full.....I dont know maybe I'm just thinking to much into it? Who knows? But I know that Bo is a freaking genius with words and I wouldnt put it past him for him to do something like this and to have it be meaningful.

I think the pringles can is just an example of anxiety. When you’re freaking out it’s like everything is going wrong and the problem is trying to cross the street or get up that flight of stairs. But neither the street nor the stairs is the problem. Something else is the problem but you’re focusing on that at the time. The Pringle’s aren’t the problem, they’re just the focus of there being a problem Just my 2 cents

I think the pringle can has to do with partially with just the easy relatability theme and the idea when he says "Just make em wider" I think this is saying everyone just gives him basic advice that doesn't really solve the problem cause changing the width of a pringle can would actually make them harder to eat

Here’s what I picked up from the video after watching it a few times, also after listening to what others think: I think the Pringle can represents the performance Industry. People keep shoving their hands down, trying to reach it and become a performer. But they can’t reach it and don’t succeed. The crumbs at the bottom represent the mediocre and unimportant media in the world, and when it goes “spilling on his face” it’s that media getting blasted in your face. And I think you’re right about the burrito. He started to do all this stuff as he was achieving fame (adding stuff to the burrito) but years later (at the end of the line where they wrap it) things were spilling out and he couldn’t handle or control what he added to it when he wasn’t aware of the consequences. He was upset at the people who knew it would end up badly for not warning him about how it would end, and he learned the hard way. He wouldn’t have done half the shit he had made himself be apart of or expected himself to maintain later, if he knew he wouldn’t be able to handle it when he was older.

Yeah yeah yeah i like this alot i think i was pretty close to the burrito :) but had no ideal about the pringle can lol but yes this makes a lot of sense because he does say doesnt every one feel like the can is too small as in the barrier to entry in entertainment is too tight or too high really good analysis thank you!!

I feel like he just threw in the pringles bit as a way to keep it lighthearted and funnt at the start? Like he said, "You can tell them anything, if you just make it funny, make it rhyme". The song should be taken as a whole and not just part by part. I loved this reaction to it!! You're actually trying to analyse and take it in I'm SHOOK

if you still aren't clear the burrito is his career and the attendant is his agent. he wanted the career. nobody told him all the different "ingredients" that also came with it, especially his agent. they just wanted money and his audience forced him hard on stage and gave him shit. look up the videos. watch it again and see how sad this song really is and empathize with him saying goodbye to the comedy industry

I think the Pringle can is a metaphor for reaching happiness. A lot of people (the audience that feels him) struggle to find happiness and some people have kids to help them reach the happiness at the bottom of the can.

6:49 - I've seen this quite a number of times now and I don't think I ever thought about how the serious part comes after he says "bring it dooooown" at the end of the bit about the burrito. Maybe I'm overanalyzing things but perhaps he meant that to signify that he's about to bring it down from the fun of the comedy to some serious shit 🤔 Who knows

I think that whether or not auto tune is lame or not depends on how you use it. If you use it to make yourself sound a little better, maybe help you hit notes you just can't physically hit or help you correct a slight variation in your voice that you didn't want there, then it's fine. If you use it to make yourself sound good when you actually don't, then it sucks. And, of course, if you use it the way Bo Burnham did here where the whole point of it is making fun of using it to sound awesome, then it's fine.

this was the last song he ever performed live and I think the Pringles metaphor is how he can't reach his goals or happiness and when he has a daughter he hopes he can reach his happiness and the burrito one is because he blew up really fast and was just thrown into the mix and he wouldn't have done it if he knew what it actually was and what is was cause for him ie. his anxiety

It has one metaphor not a bunch like some people say.... He literally tells you in the beginning that this is because kanye west ranted about nonsense acting like it was important. He is making fun of him by ranting about unimportant things...that is the majority of the bit. The end is metaphorical but it is pretty simple...bo has struggled with becoming well known very fast and trying to please people even though he doesn't wanna be in the limelight. He is telling fans that he doesn't think he can handle the pressure of fame right now. When I say simple I am strictly talking about picking up on and understanding the metaphor. The struggle in his mind is not simple at all and he has also touched upon feeling like he is taking advantage of people. Similar to what Kurt Cobain went through turning famous and knowing that the industry only sees your fans as walking piggy banks to be shaken as hard as they can while simultaneously taking advantage of the entertainer. Being used and feeling you are helping an industry use the people you care about because they helped you achieve something and not being able to do anything about it.....I can't imagine being in that position.

I think he felt empathy for Kanye. Like people bitch about him for not creating music like we expect him to. And no one really cares about the shit that upsets his mind. Opinions right or wrong not important, mental health problems can happen to anyone and a racing mind can be soul destroying. And it might be about the stupids of things but it can be overwhelming. And when bo mentions in his previous work' art is dead' about a child who needs attention, but by getting that attention it is a addiction that you don't grow out of. And like all other addiction it is not healthy. So I think bo means to show empathy to Kanye, saying he is not alone or mad. But a human who is overwhelmed. And his fame is a double eged knife as he has strangers listening to him. While most of us when overwhelmed don't have a audience to judge us.

Maybe the Pringles can is simply sort of resembling an unease at the attaining of happiness. Like how the can makes it’s hard to get a chip, depression makes it hard to get/feel happiness.

For the Pringle can one, I would say it means it was going fine at the beginning (4” into the can) and then you try to keep going (tip the can) and it all fails (spills on your face)

Burito is a metapbor for his comedy contract and the short time he has to create quality jokes. And he did not knew that it would be messy so that is what he ment when he said "dud you should ha e warned me you are the burito expert" implying that he did not realized what he got himself into before it was late. So he is anhappy about it and that is why he cant handle this. He does not want to compromise the quality for quantity. At least that is how i see it. Sins this was his last live song. I think it is very deep song

Ya'll completely are missing the entire point. The bit that leads up to this final performance is his him talking about how we are all slaves to performance. And all we do is put ourselves online to be judged and then feel bad about it and have people react to us while we are simultaneously performing for an audience themselves (aka a youtube reaction channel or commentator).
