In the concluding segment of our 'Boarded Up Britain' series, we venture into Northallerton, the hometown of Rishi Sunak, to delve into the concerning state of our high streets. Northallerton is an affluent middle class market town and as such is immune to the challenges plaguing many working-class communities across the country. We scrutinize why the Prime Minister's response to this crisis may be falling short and whether the stark differences in economic resilience between Northallerton and other struggling areas shed light on the effectiveness of funding allocation, raising questions about priorities in comparison to Foreign Aid.

Nick and Jill, you guys do a great job of highlighting the stark contrasts between affluent areas and working-class towns like Grimsby. The gap in investment, infrastructure, and community support are obvious but too many people just believe that's the way it's supposed to be. It's sad it's like this, and even sadder it's the same story all over the world. You're raising awareness and encouraging people to look at their own towns and cities and hopefully realise they can do something. Participate in local elections and advocate for meaningful change. Great series, great job documenting these issues and fostering discussion. We look forward to seeing the next series of "Bordered Up Britain". Rest well friends!

Thankyou Gina and Rob, your comment pinpoints the hope I had for this series. before I started it I was able to walk around with rose coloured glasses on and not see the decline of my very own high street. I had that snobbish opinion that it wasn’t happening in my town. Sadly it really was and investigating my own high street losses spurred me on to see what was happening elsewhere. if others do the same, the faster this topic will be spoken about and eventually it will get onto Parliament agenda with the level of seriousness we deserve.

@xenosscape8573
@xenosscape8573 2 ай бұрын
@@allykhan8594 councils should encourage locals to purchase the shops in town in full (not on mortages) , rather than just letting National tycoons buy them , if a local owns the shop building outright and look after it , the Rents will be low. compared to a tycoon who only uses shop retail property to make massive profits off the back of locals. thriving town centers are reliant on low Rents , to allow businesses to thrive and most of the Councils in Deprived areas continued to get their funds via appeasing big Tycoons , big business. just by seeing sunaks highstreet , it is clear all those properties are fully owned by locals , one example is the Old building the argos is in , that is clearly locally owned and well looked after because no tycoon is going to buy that place if it needs consistent regular maintance.

The elites have decided we will run our economy on windmills and imported gas and electricity. They've closed down the factories.. I believe the goal is to now close down actual physical shops in town centres and high streets so the only shops that will remain are supermarkets and other select out of town type stores. It can cost £1000-2000 or more per week to rent a small shop in town. Imagine the profit you need to make in order to pay bills and wages to make that work. So shops stay empty and/or shops come and go. It can cost some £600 or more per week to have a little car trailer/caravan stall in town selling food or such. Everywhere is in decline. Just not the likes of Pangbourne yet...

It doesn't help when retail parks are developed at the expense of town centres. Free easy car parking for retail parks, wheras town centres come with car parking charges/restrictions and long walks. Also supermarkets can sell most things, whereas they used to just focus on food.

Wow Stephen, I have to be honest and Northallerton didn’t fit my narrative as perfectly as I would have hoped, there were tell tale signs that it’s a town that might change soon, like you say the Turkish Barbers were already prevalent on some of the side streets. All it would take would be a few Eastern European shops taking up the empty unit on the high street and you’d not only see the current shoppers go elsewhere but the other independents start to leave. I heard just this Sunday that in the biggest poll ever taken Rishi is all set to lose his Northallerton seat and the only real hope the UK has is definitely Reform.

Hopefully if they have any common land an encampment of gypsy travellers will arrive soon. Unlike placement of illegal migration centres, the traveller communities are not directed by government. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone with money who is tired of politicians not having to live with the consequences of their policies starts discreetly bribing traveller communities to start targeting the places that the likes of Sunak live. It’s a way to screw with the the Elite class while appearing unconnected with the actions of those people on the ground who are visibly being an antisocial nuisance.

Trouble is, I'm not sure relying on Retail isn't going to bring those larger / mid-size towns up to the level of Northallerton. Aside from larger town centres having been impacted by historic planning decisions such as outlet villages, retail parks, the main driver for retailers leaving is that there isn't enough money to be chased any longer. You could theoretically subsidise all those brands in Northallerton to open and run units in all the other towns shown in this video but their sales are still going to be capped and they aren't going to stick around longer term (unless taxpayers keep subsidising them) unless we can find a way to put more money into the pockets of those in the catchment market and free up more time for those same people to be able to donate leisure time to visiting the high street (opposed to a stressed grab and dash for essentials at an out of town supermarket or quick click and buy of non-essentials online). Would also be interested what the leisure offering is for the people of places like Northallerton, where so many places seem to have reduced options in the past 30 years with the loss of parks, libraries, leisure centres, swimming pools, community centres etc... with many of the offerings that still exist having put prices and be far less affordable than they once were (normally where council have sold off to a private entity). Sad times.
@GENerationXplorers
@GENerationXplorers 2 ай бұрын
you make a good point, some of those designer brands would quickly die a death on our poorer high streets, we simply don’t have the same level of disposal income we had previously. it really is a case of the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer. More recently we see even the established likes of Ted Baker leaving the high street under retail struggles..

My town of Spalding made it on to the list and I am so surprised to see how many Lincolnshire towns are on the list. It seems that this county which has been so instrumental especially in growing a large portion of the agricultural produce that every Briton including the 10 Downing street folks eat every day, has been completely ignored for a long time. I'm concerned about the leveling up payment and that the council has come up with very mediocre plans to spend it. I watched your Grimsby video and it broke my heart to see that, they really deserve to get that leveling up payment. I know that we're probably going to have a Labour government soon and what concerns me about this is that they'll get in not because they were any better but that the Tories have become so bad at running the country. Britons deserve better than mediocre, they deserve leadership that speaks for them and gets things done right.

Very true Gavin, I feel that even if the 2 million a year regeneration fund was continued to be paid after conservatives were kicked out local councils would need some real clear direction on how and where it should be spent. I have no faith in my council to spend it correctly, they will spend thousands on consultations, meetings about consultations and then disagree until there is no money left. your right Labour will probably get in because everyone is sick to death of the Tories. having lived through several Labour governments we know they are just as bad and well all probably be bankrupt with their reckless spending over the next four years. Hopefully Reform will win enough seats in Parliament to have a voice, a voice that gets heard on mainstream media more and a voice so loud that in four years they will be front runners.

my nearest high street is Blyth in Northumberland, Oxfam, Sue Ryder, St Oswalds, Iceland, animal rescue, Britsh Red Cross, Poundland, Cash generators, Vapeland, a collection of takeaways and betting shops banks & building societies but the best-looking shops are empty and have artists' impressions on the windows of what they "could look like" to say the area is rundown isn't doing it justice, the council is revamping the market square yet again, every 3-5 years they tear it up and rearrange everything saying that will attract inward investment into the town, you know the old saying "doing the same thing every day expecting a different result is a sign of insanity" Blyth Council has taken that to heights no other council has ever dared to tread, the waste of money is on a level never seen anywhere else in the UK, it is one of the most rundown violent towns in the UK and the people voted in a Tory MP and Northumberland County Council has a Tory majority, you can't make this s**t up, Take a look at Blyth you will not be disappointed, in the 1960s it was the busiest port in the UK with 12 coalmines feeding 6 million tonnes of coal into ships taking it all over the world, today the port is silent in comparison and so is the high street,

It’s a really crazy situation isnt it? that the port that had its very industry ripped away from them by the Tories found themselves voting for them again in 2019 on the back of poor promises for change. Well, we all did the same sadly and without exception we are all worse off. The artists impressions on windows, im actually grateful to see those as most stand boarded up or empty with a ridiculous “to let” sign up. nobody is ever letting them, these greedy landlords that won’t negotiate reasonable rents surely don’t think that there is a queue of independents wanting to move into their long standing empty shells whilst paying full whack? all they are doing is maintaining a property portfolio that they probably inherited until a Council bankrupts itself trying to buy out the buildings at market value to repurpose them. thank you for bringing Blyth to my attention, it’s gone on the list and I’d love to get your local opinion when I visit later in the year. Stay in touch, im on insta and email is in the about 👍

Interesting video Nick, interesting video Northallerton seems to be doing well. Kendal my closest "town" is doing OK I would say. My MP is Tim Farron, Libdem he lives in the next village 2 miles or so away. I am well aware that I'm lucky, although sometimes I feel like I'm living in a theme park where the majority of the visitors don't give a damn. It's not uncommon for locals (and I mean "born and bred") to arrive home after work to mind themselves unable to access their own drive. ☹️🤬Thanks for sharing, cheers Alistair 👍

It’s great that the Lakes attracts such a wonderful footfall and that you have MPs that live so close to places that they represent! it can be a curse and a blessing attracting so much footfall too. we struggle with parking near our property too (if I moved my car this weekend I’d not get within half a mile of my property on my return), with the increased footfall sadly comes increased crime with robberies increasing ten fold during the holiday season. Barrow in Cumbria is probably the closest place that is really suffering with their representative hailing from the market town down the road. By all accounts he seems like a pretty decent MP that gets involved with a lot of the day to day in Barrow, I don’t know of anyone that’s ever seen our MP in the town!

Long time since I was in Northallerton and I agree with you on certain, more affluent areas of the country, just have to go to Barnard Castle, which always seems to be busy when you drive through. Our Wilco is still empty with no sign of anyone wanting to move in and funny you mentioned the Boro, a place that is quite local but we have never used for shopping or even a visit. Never been to Bridlington and watching this I will not be visiting any time soon. I could cry when I see York, so disappointing and we visit every year but to be honest, only buy food and nothing else. "Sort out our working class towns and cities first".....I could not agree with you more, us first and other people later! Cheers Alan

thank you so much Alan 🙏 we have had to put up with these empty units for years now. some of the shops in York have been closed since 2018 so there is no blaming the pandemic for those. its the greedy landlords not budging on rent and being able to afford to keep those buildings vacant until they get the inflated value they want to sell them. we need a party in power that consists of MPs that don’t all have a property portfolio of their own. Sadly as many as 3/4s of MPs have property portfolios that they manage so they won’t be passing any bills to weaken landlords powers anytime soon.

Well first things first, I’ve just finished a new Saturday night filming/schedule/programme (don’t get excited it’s total crap!). However, I found it very stressful editing my pathetic film that my blood pressure rose to dangerous levels (in fact I’m probably in A&E right now). All I had left of my miserable night to look forward to was GENeration Xplorers Friday evenings film. However, after watching it my blood pressure is now in the stratosphere ❤️ My MP is Vicky Ford (Con), or as we like to call her Vicky Fraud. In my city centre it’s very noticeable how affluent most people are plus very few boarded up shops (there are of course a few). To be fair though I’ve never seen anybody with a 22 carat gold shopping bag. Your film Nick has just reminded me to apply to my local Communist Party for membership. We shall overcome some day! BRILLIANT TEN STAR FILM ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ THE FIRST EVER GIVEN!

now that is the best news ive heard all week, we need Mike back on the telly! Yours and mine both Mike (re. blood pressure), think ive aged 10 years filming these last few back to back segments, when this nonsense does return it will come back as a once a month segment for the well-being of me and the viewers! Vicky Fraud I like that, interestingly an Irish MP that also has a substantial property portfolio. how we can ever make life hard for the landlords of these empty spaces when the MPs that represent them are also landlords is beyond me. Loved that gold shopping bag, I had to chase her down as an afterthought but im glad I did, heaven forbid anyone ever takes me too seriously! the Commies would create an even bigger divide than the Tories but im guessing the have nots would all be better off (or at least think they were). 10 stars is high praise indeed. excited to see yours later. Spoiler alert im out trying to film the typical British Drunk Antics that happen over a Bank Holiday Weekend, when im not filming I see so much so armed with a camera I went out to film all the most deprived places yesterday. 4 hours later and I only have about 30 seconds of worthy footage. hopefully there will be more nutcases out today!

Frustrations here: My response has disappeared. Wished I'd copied it from a text app- it'll never read the same 🧐! You know my thoughts on empty shops and a sleeping or lack of creativity ( or both) city council. I'm sure there are more reasons for the empty shops and yes, lack of council involvement is one. Unemployment another big contributor as is retail rental space costs. To name a few. Now a counter vision. The shops may be empty- why is the place in such a mess? People are responsible for their environment, whether there are shops, amenities or otherwise. Neglect adds to the poor state of the area which in turn makes the almost slum like town centre loose it's lustre. That, if I may be so bold, isn't solely the Council's responsibility. A bit of pride in one's town would go a long way into making it more attractive - even if only cosmetic. Now, I think I worden this a lot better last time...😊! But you get my drift. Looking forward to seeing what you do with these videos. Contacting councils, local papers? Would they pick up on the stories? Anyway, yes I was glued to the screen and Yes I applaud the series. Keep it up. Looking forward to what your next series uncovers. Happy spring days 😎👌🙋‍♀🇳🇿🥝

You know what half of our problem is and as much as i like my music, a great number of them who made their money in the UK (Gary Numan, Johnny Lydon, Steve Jones, Billy Idol and many others) went to live in the US and mainly to avoid being taxed here and yes, I include "patriot extraordinaire" Morrissey as well but it doesn't stop there. The majority of the rich have invested their money off shore and dont pay tax in this country and that's money we could desperately use but hey, greed is good or how does it go? The problem is that everyone is just talking about the decline but nobody's willing to address the elephant in the room which is that a lot of people simply dont pay their taxes in this country. Yes, the government would probably squander that money as well but that's a different topic which boils down to this ridiculous two party system we have where you'll get a different party in power every so often but ALWAYS the same damn politics, same as in America.. okay, rant over
@GENerationXplorers

Well thats very true Martin, I can agree wholeheartedly with that. Our big tax earners will always find a way to pay tax elsewhere. It’s not just a game played by our wealthy Brits it’s the Corporations almost leading by example, Amazon, Apple, etc are all afforded Corporate Tax breaks whilst ensuring only minimal tax is paid here despite the billions they earn here. I’m sure Rishi and his wife will be so much more better off when they are out of number ten as Akshata will immediately return to not paying taxes here unquestioned and unchallenged.

Mine lives in the affluent Middle class Market Town of Malton and has an extensive property portfolio. I googled several other KZfaqrs MPs and found that their working class towns and cities were also represented by MPs that are not from there. this Middle Class/Working Class divide was nowhere near as prominent 14 years ago and in actual fact I moved to the most affluent part of Scarborough 20 years ago to join what was then probably considered Middle Class. 14 years of austerity, poor choices and cuts to public services have booted us down to rejoin the working class..

While we don't live in the UK so don't have an MP, I could tell you who our Congressmen and Senators are. They are also well off and live in nice cities! So many stark differences here between Northallerton and the other cities you highlighted. We certainly find that here in the US too, between cities. You mention other middle class cities are also well off in comparison to the working class ones. I'm just not sure though it's about political ideology. The US is currently run, by what could be considered a "liberal" government. Both the Administration and the Senate. The Congress is only ever so slightly "conservative." Things haven't improved and have actually gotten worse over the last 4 years. I believe that it will only improve if both sides drop some of their ideologies and actually look for solutions instead! You pointed out some of the things that may be working. Maybe, it's time to build on some of them. Loved the thought provoking series, Nick and Jill!

All your videos need to be broadcast on primetime TV, every single day, right up until the GE. I've watched all of your videos and they're insightful, if quite depressing, but the public needs to see the true horrors of austerity. Thank you for your content, it's so desperately needed in the face of mainstream media deception.

Ah thank you Milly, thats quite possibly the nicest comment I’ve ever had on this series. I will be doing a couple of Satirical Political Shorts and one full length video just prior to the local elections on May the 2nd. Hopefully they will continue to highlight the real division in this country now that has been caused by these uncaring politicians.

Northallerton looks like a really pretty town. Like you say we have good and bad throughout the country. Our nearest town of Spalding is dire and uninviting, but just a short drive to the town of Stamford, it is a completely different story.

This video needs to go viral. Its absolutely despicable the way they live compared to the rest of us. The way they hate the "Working class" is so wrong and sickening. The very People that work and have to pay for them to be in the positions they are in and yet they walk all over us with utter contempt. He passes out sermons on how to live and yet He lives in the lap of luxury far removed from the mess He has created in this Country. We are all paying for London and for the likes of Him. They have dried the well of patience and finances over and over again. All they care about is themselves and have crossed far to many lines. The whole system is so corrupt and completely out of touch. It should be scrapped and the likes of Him made to pay back what should have never been given to Him in the first place. Thank you GENeartion Xplorers. A great channel

thank you so much Zark, really appreciate that. it is a shocking divide and while we all point to online, retail parks, changing trends the main overriding factor here has been those in power and the MPs that “look after” our constituencies. they look after their own interests which nearly always consists of a substantial property portfolio (likely inherited) and make sure that they live as comfortably as possible whilst keeping our dead towns and cities at arms length.

We let a bunch of criminals sell this island off right from under us, we are one of the richest country's on earth yet we watch people living and dying in the doorways of empty buildings, surely that has to be a crime against humanity, heart breaking what has happened to this land.

it truly is heart breaking. one of the reasons I ended the series there was it was taking too much of an emotional toll to continue. Seeing the real day to day struggles in Grimsby and then visiting Northallerton where people are swanning about without a care in the world was just too much.

Not surprised..I'm sure places like Hampstead are thriving, whilst poverty stricken towns look like something out of a Dystopian film made in the 70s....(The secret of Soylent green)....as an example....

@@GENerationXplorers Ours doesn't show up, largely because we live in what has been a very safe Tory seat for umpteen years. Could be interesting this year, if he's worried enough. Not that it will make any difference, but would be a moment of schadenfreude watching him sweat.
