I use a small piece of 2x6 with a shallow groove cut down the middle to rest the skeg in while I'm trailering the boat. In the last few years it's worn off some of the green paint, but the alternative was not have the wood to rest it in & end up putting a hole in the boat floor from the skeg bouncing around. I've also found that standing is about the best way to handle a longtail. Sitting makes it a bit harder to turn although sitting works if your just going straight & have a long ways to go. Nice setup BTW, I'm running a simple small kit with a 6.5 predator on a 1436 jon.

Thanks! Gotta admit, I had a bit of a fanboy moment when I saw that you commented. I've watched a ton of your videos. There'll be more coming, but its current single digit temps where I live, so it'll be a couple of months

@@dereksmith2929 Haha well thank you for watching! I really enjoy hearing from others and seeing how their builds are going, especially when they make videos about it! I really do look forward to seeing some of your content once it warms up for you. 55 degrees here in South Florida... I think the water is warmer than the air.

Thank you! I've made quite a few upgrades since this video. Early goose season starts in a month, so I'm getting ready to build a blind for it here in the next couple of weeks. I'll do an update once that's done. Thanks for watching!

Nick Block I’m getting 18-19 mph with just me. 14-15 mph with another guy, duck blind and gear.

SuperCal I’ve thought about getting an outboard for fishing in the summer, but a lot of the places I duck hunt really need a long tail or surface drive

My 14’48” Lowe flat-bottom runs 23 with one guy spinning an 8” prop 4,200 rpms,.. Just to give comparison to your setup,.. no real pitch selections so if you choose poorly on hull you are kinda stuck,.. im running GX390 clone 420 stock with mild governor bypass.. If you truly need that hull unfortunately you are stuck in the sub 20 mph range~ but its still fun who cares

Brian Boyee I realize now that the mod v Hull isn’t ideal for speed with a long tail. I run open water more than rivers, and it gets pretty choppy here in Michigan during duck season. A surface drive would’ve been a better choice, but it’s not in the budget right now. I’m hoping to see more speed out of it this year. I’m doing a build on the motor right now. It should have a lot more torque, and with the governor out, I’ll be able to run higher rpms. It should be done in the next week or so. I’ll do some speed runs when it’s all done.

dirty south out door I’m running a 9x6 right now. I’m getting about 18mph with just me and 15-16mph with a buddy and hunting gear. I’m currently in the middle of building the motor (rods, cam, carb, etc) so I’m hoping to see better number this year.

Switch to the next smaller or even two smaller props down I bet your rpms are right at 3,600 or below Too much going wrong on that combo for the 9” IMO

Good video. A person might try a short piece of 2 and 1/2 diameter fire hose to slip over the skeg when transporting. Most every excavation contractor has a piece of damaged hose that they would give you. Now that you have the fueling problem fixed has your top speed increased?

How much was motor
@dereksmith2929
@dereksmith2929 5 жыл бұрын
Chay Rogers $699 at harbor freight. I bought the 2 year warranty for another $200. The swamp runner kit was about $700. All together, it was still cheaper than buying a new outboard.

What's our top speed
@dereksmith2929
@dereksmith2929 5 жыл бұрын
The best I've gotten is 18 mph. That was pretty much just me and the boat. I'd like a bit more speed, but I can get pretty much anywhere I need to go, so I've got no complaints. The motor is bone stock. I've considered a few mods, but I'm more concerned with reliability, so I'll probably keep it that way.

Unfortunately that boat is all wrong for a longtail Best sell one or the other and start over if you are dead set on getting anywhere near 23/24 mph You dont want to cross the short transom threshold for one, you want a flat bottom,.. and long is fine but boat needs to be no wider than 36” IMO
