Welcome to Amity Tracks. This is a channel where we discuss a wide range of music related topics. The focus will be on music from the 1960’s through the 1990’s, but not exclusively. Classic rock, progressive rock, psychedelic rock, hard rock, jazz, blues, folk, country, soul…all genres are fair game. From time to time we may dabble in other popular culture, such as film, history or sports. But music is primarily what we do here. The focus is on the music and the artists. We hope to encourage an open and dynamic community with fun and informative discussions not only in the videos, but also in the comments section. Please note that, while disagreement and discussion is welcome, no personal attacks or out of bounds comments will be tolerated. We want to be a part of the positive larger vinyl community and other like-minded, music focused communities.

HI, as far as i'm concerned "Highway 61 Revisited" is, was and always will be n° 1, Blood on the tracks and Blonde on Blonde can swap position from time to time, Bringing all back home is following behind. I'm also very fond of bootleg series, i've got almost everything. Modern Times, Time out of mind and street legal are the one i prefer among the also-run

1st time listener and subscriber... I've had a deep love for music that has both guided my life....brought extreme joy and has haunted me at the same time... bob dylan certainly fills some big shoes in forging the movement that I grew up in... fascinating person... mysteriously talented songwriter respected by most all his peers....cheers from Mexico (Nashville Skyline is quite unique)

Good to see Bringing It All Back Home so high. I agree. I remember going through as very dark period, my senior year in college (1993), and my mother was dying from lung cancer, so I had taken a leave of absence to help her and my father, and while my mother was dying my father died of a heart attack. One of the last conversations we had was about music--Dylan and the Beatles, in particular. He always hated the music I and my older brother's listened to. At any rate, I had let him borrow my truck to run some errands, and he listened to a couple of my tapes while he was in it. But he says to me, you know I was listening to some of your music and, you know, it wasn't bad. The tapes he listened to was Sgt. Pepper's and BIABH. He said he really liked the one where they laugh at the beginning and restart the song. LOL. Ah, that conversation to be continued...someday. Thanks for indulging me.

Broadly agree and Knopfler also on Infidels. Dylan' Rolling Thunder Review threaded through America's heartland for 7 months in 1995 - 6 in with such distinctive musicians as Scarlet Rivera and Mick Ronson (ex David Bowie's lead guitarist). They forged - for me - definitive transformations of even such oldies as Hattie Carrol ('64). The Bootleg Series Vol 5 is a modestly priced 2 cds with 22 of those performances and has become my favorite Dylan hangout. No booklet but Scorcese's film probing - but only 6 live performances that are not playlisted on the DVD. Incidentally his bootleg series 1-3 now a cheap 3 cd set. Thanks Bob.

Enjoyed this, cool stuff. Personally if i was to talk about Dylan theres about 25 of his albums id have to mention! And thats wouldnt even be touching on the Bootleg Series, compilations or live albums. But i suppose its how you want to approach it. Such an immense body of work you porbably need to be more concise for a newcomer. Stuart

The main appeal of Blonde on Blonde for me is side 2 and side 3. Fantastic group of songs on those two sides. For that alone i would have put BoB much higher on my list. I also would have put John Wesley Harding on a list of this sort too. Love the weird enigmatic allegorical lyrics and the stripped down craftiness of it.

Chronicles is the best book I’ve ever read. I’ve read a few too. It inspired me in many ways, but most importantly to follow my dream as a musician . Such a fantastic and uniquely written piece of literature . I doubt we’ll get a sequel, but if we do, I can’t wait to see what he’ll include. He left out so much in version one. In fact, he left out probably his most iconic moments. No blood on Tracks era stories, no 64-66 stories. No going electric stories. I may be mistaken but I’m pretty sure he didn’t do a deep dive on his pivotal eras and it was STILL an absolutely riveting read.

Yes, I agree, that you're crazy if you don't think "Blonde on Blonde" is one of the 20 greatest albums of all time. I heard recently that one critic thought that it influenced "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." As far as the music, that's one of the strengths of the album, some of Nashville's top studio musicians, along with Robbie Robertson and Al Kooper from New York.

I've never heard this topic discussed, but how he changes his singing voice from album to album or even song to song. I like how his voice sounds on Nashville Skyline for example. The one that puzzles me is the voice he uses on "Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again", as an example. Especially where he sings those exact words. I always why he would detract from his own song with that affected singing style. I asked about this once with Dylan fans and they got mad--Questions were interpreted as criticism. I'm curious why he does it.

When I saw that you left Blonde on Blonde out of your top 12 I thought, "yeah, that's crazy...". When I saw you had Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid ahead of Blonde on Blonde I thought "He's stark raving mad!" No room for Infidels with Knopfler having a key role on guitar? Also, John Wesley Harding a superior record to Nashville Skyline and New Morning a better record than Another Side. Kind of splitting hairs here since there are so many great Dylan albums. But Blonde on Blonde is the really big swing-and-miss in your review.

Most know Blind Willie McTell was left off Infidels. The story goes that Knopfler who was basically the uncredited producer told Dylan to wait until he got back from a tour of Germany before finalising the track listing. Knopfler returned to find it all wrap up and no McTell. Instead of being a very good album it could have been an all time great as he also left off Foot of Pride, Tell Me and a superior version of Sweatheart Like You. Yet he left on Union Dundown! As someone once said Bob Dylan isn’t always the greatest judge of his own music.

The peaks on Blonde on Blonde are Olympian but the entire enterprise is very inconsistent. Highway 61 Revisited is his greatest album but I understand a preference for Blood on the Tracks, which is top 4 for me. Dylan's best live album by far is the "Royal Albert Hall Concert" (Really Manchester Free Trade Hall-1966) *Judas*. It was released by Columbia officially in 1998.
@jamesblanshard9468
@jamesblanshard9468 Жыл бұрын
Maybe you should think about how things were in 1966, in an 18 month period he made 3 of the greatest albums ever made, the middle one Highway 61 has always been my favourite. Desolation Row on its own has to be talked about, but to leave out BonB for a film score with one song on it is a joke.
@amitytracks

Objectively, you are correct. But at the outset I said this is a subjective list. If I were listing the most important, most influential, greatest accomplishments...of course Blonde on Blonde would have to be high up there. But I've been up front in several videos on why I just have never been able to get into Blonde on Blonde on a personal level. And I've always loved that soundtrack for some reason. I am a big soundtrack fan in general, though.

I also feel that 'Blonde on Blonde' has been one of the most overrated albums in rock history (along with 'Exile on Main Street') Can I justify my disdain by the written word? Perhaps... but why bother? Actually, most multi-disc albums would have been a lot better if they had been issued as single-discs... including The Beatles' 'White...'
