tips and tricks inside your video hopefully help you
don't forget get your hands dirty
A drive shaft, driveshaft, driving shaft, propeller shaft (prop shaft), or Cardan shaft is a mechanical component for transmitting torque and rotation, usually used to connect other components of a drive train that cannot be connected directly because of distance or the need to allow for relative movement between them.
As torque carriers, drive shafts are subject to torsion and shear stress, equivalent to the difference between the input torque and the load. They must therefore be strong enough to bear the stress, whilst avoiding too much additional weight as that would in turn increase their inertia.
To allow for variations in the alignment and distance between the driving and driven components, drive shafts frequently incorporate one or more universal joints, jaw couplings, or rag joints, and sometimes a splined joint or prismatic joint.

Very good. I need to do the offside driveway on my own Dagenham Dustbin. Is it much different? Also, I take it I have to drain the gearbox first?

Leave nut slightly on, use a drift to get ball joint pinch bolt out. Nut will keep it centred. Hitting nut with a hammer will damage threads. Another point is using air impact gun with standard sockets which can potentially break the socket. Use impact sockets which are designed to take the extra force.

Hi Great video Quick one for you. You mention if you don't drain the oil it will spill. Will it be much if the cars is up on front axle stands. Do you need to top up the oil after the change. I am looking at doing both front drive shafts on my 60 plate titanium soon! Many thanks

I will need to do the same work on my x type soon. You mentioned about draining oil. Gear box or transfer box? Cheers
@bodgitandleggitgarage
@bodgitandleggitgarage 6 жыл бұрын
Michael hi mate you will only have a transfer box if you have a four wheel drive if you do have a four-wheel-drive yes also good idea to replace the oil in that just make sure you get the right oil for the right box

Awesome vid mate. Would the driveshaft also clunk when you tap the throttle and then take your foot off the pedal? My transit connect also clunks when changing gear or else you go super smooth when changing the gear. Cheers mate. Loving the videos

Hi mate it all depends you will normally hear a driveshaft clicking when you turn around a corner if you've got a clunk it could be coming from your drop link or maybe your wishbone I will check them first the only times I've had a really heard a clunk coming from a CV joint is when that little clips in the end and come off and it allows the shaft to slide in and out of the joint but that's a really happens

bodgit and leggit garage cheers mate. I do have slight play in my passenger side driveshaft which led me to this video and at 7.10 mins in on your clip I’m thinking it’s that. Ive been told the driveshafts on this vid (same as my transit connect are like spaghetti lol). Also Im pretty sure the driveshaft are the original ones. I changed all 3 gearbox mounts thinking that was the cause. Tbh the gearbox mounts were that bad I thought that was the cause as the whole engine rocked when shutting the van engine off. The vans clutch starts to slip after 30/40 mins when warm so when I change the clutch I may just put a new driveshaft on the gearbox side. Great advice about the wishbone, I’ll also check that. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the bushes on the wishbone are original too. Thank for the reply mate

Not a bit of copper grease in sight! Always worth putting some on end of driveshaft as they can and do rust in and a smear on shank of ball joint pinch bolt will stop it rusting in. Not on threads mind. Bit of thread lock on there would have been nice, especially as he's re using an old bolt.

G Cunningham copper grease is no good for that it acts like sandpaper and it will do more damage than good maybe for you try and be clever in your comments maybe do a bit more research

Great tutorial! I have to replace the front bearings. Only question I have is what do i have to do besides the points you mention and removing the brakes and the hub/strut connection? I sometimes read you have to lower the subframe?

I've got a '96 Ford Contour 2.0L 5-speed (nearly identical to this Mondeo), and I have been trying to get the drive shaft out of the gearbox like you and others have mentioned, with no luck. I think it might be seized up in there. because when I went to drain the fluid out of the gearbox, nothing came out! Any suggestions for enhanced "persuasion?"

hi mate what exactly are you changing because if you are only changing certain parts you don't need to take out the full drive shaft you can disconnect it at the Cup that goes into the gearbox and leave the cup inside the gearbox so if you can tell me exactly what you are changing I will be able to help you more

There are a lot of problems I am trying to address at once. The most urgent is the hydraulic slave cylinder, which has a severe leak, and I have no clutch, as a result. The drive shaft removal was a secondary concern amongst others. I thought since I would have to remove the gearbox to get at the slave cylinder, I probably should do the clutch as well. The front end of my Contour makes a lot of noise when I drive it, which increased with speed, I've replaced a lot of the suspension parts from the sway bar links, to the wheel bearings and hubs, brakes, and rotors, and the lower control arm on the passenger side, both lower ball joints. So, all that is remaining, as far as I can tell, that would be causing this noise would be the drive shafts. Any ideas you have would be great. I am not a mechanic, so this is all trial, & error for me.

+Christopher Certa well if your taking the gearbox out what I would suggest is remove the drive shaft and leave the cup in the gearbox you can do this by cutting the strap on the black CV boots this will allow you to take the driveshaft out if you drop the subframe under the engine you can take the gearbox out with the cup in place and then it will be a lot easier to get the cut out when the gearbox is on the floor hope this helps any more questions just ask

Hi!Is it possible to rebuild a old driveshaft with a new "spider"? A new driveshaft is too expensive and the only thing broken on mine was the "spider". Mine is a 2.2 tdci 2005 and if possible, would buy a used one from the 2.0 tdci
@bodgitandleggitgarage
@bodgitandleggitgarage 5 жыл бұрын
Hi mate the only problem with that is I really wouldn't know where you'll be able to get the parts from as all the motor factors and the main dealers won't just sell you that part why not just go and get a second-hand one and make one good one out of a second-hand one and your one if money is tight that's what you have to do like always it's best buy new but we don't live in a perfect world

(Mondeo 2.0 2006 tdi manual estate) I had the cup from hell that would not come out of the gearbox. The spider was a tiny bit growly but I couldn't feel any damage inside the cup, after a good wash out and dry off. I wasn't able to refit a whole new driveshaft on account of this recalcitrant cup, but separated the new cup from the new shaft and fitted the new spider end into the old cup. Be aware though that there are different types of cup/spider sizes and you will need to get the right one. So far, 28k miles later, and a fresh couple of mots, no clunkiness (Is that a word?) but I may have been very lucky. Many thanks Leon for doing your thing, and teaching us old dogs new tricks! Much appreciated that there are guys like you looking out for the pennies for the guys and gals like us! (I ordered that blue bar as that bottom swivel is a pita on the drive, with axle stands!)
