*Please Read Video Description and Pinned Comment Below*
In this video we show you how to install a Toytec 2" Body Lift on a 2002 Toyota 4runner 4x4. Even though this modification is done on a Toyota 4runner, the information you receive in this video could help you put a body lift on another make and model truck. The technique and steps would be similar but the number and location of body mounts might be different depending on the truck you're lifting.
**Note - One thing we don't mention in the video is you will now have a 2" gap between the body and front bumper and same goes for the rear bumper. The bumpers are attached to the frame and don't move when you lift the body. There are ways to address this by drilling different holes in the mounting brackets but we didn't bother showing this because Eric was going to replace his damaged front bumper with an aftermarket one in the near future anyway. If you do a search on the internet, you'll find a write-up or two how to do it if you don't want there to be gap between the bumper and body.
**Suggested Torque Value for Body Mount Bolts - 25 ft-lbf

After the body lift, you might find your steering feels tighter and the rag joint on the steering shaft is the culprit. When you insert the puck and tighten the two halves back together with the bolts, there might have been a very slight gap between the parts. When the bolts are tight, it ends up pulling tension on the shaft making the steering feel tight. To fix it, loosen the pinch bolt for the upper rag joint halve. When you loosen the pinch bolt, the steering shaft which was under tension should now become unbound because the upper rag joint halve will slide down and find a more neutral location on the steering shaft.. If you're dealing with corrosion and the rag joint won't move freely, you might find your steering is still tight. If that's the case, you will have to work at getting it to move. Some penetrant and maybe some heat from a butane torch might work. Once you confirm your steering is now back to normal, re-tighten the pinch bolt and you're all good.

I'm a little confused about the pinch bolts for the separate halves of the rag joint. I was under the assumption that we just needed to remove the two bolts holding the part together and then after installing the lift, put the spacer puck in place and bolt it back down. Can you give some more clarification. Thanx

1 inch body lift and 2 inch suspension lift is way way way better than a 3 inch suspension lift that everyone seems to use. That’s why I like it. That’s cause the body is a smaller percentage of weight of the car than the frame and the rest of it. So it keeps center of gravity lower while also giving the A arms more usable travel. A 3 inch suspension lift starts to limit down travel due to the tilt of the a arms. The body lift also helps you clear bigger tires way better than the suspension lift, because it actually moves the Body away from the tires. Suspension lift doesn’t, just changes the starting ride height basically and when you hit a big bump, you’re more likely to rub.
@Jasonhb07

@@jvogler_art4708 I wasn't a fan of bodylifts either. The bodylift helps relieve CV angle. A 2 inch suspension and 1 inch body is ideal in my opinion. A 3 inch suspension and 1 inch bodylift is definitely the best combination for tires larger than 285 if you don't want max out alignment adjustments or chopping the firewall for clearance.

Yo Timmy! So after the bidy lift, my manual shifter is having some difficulties getting in the right gears at ease. I pulled the center column out and removed the shifter lever that's mounted the t-case and tried to heat it up with a small plumbers torch but I'm afraid I ghoul damage seals inside the shifter manifold if I get it to hot. Needless to say, I tried to heat it up, and used a cheater pipe to bend the shutter lever to the correct position to compensate for the lift but the shifter shaft that hold my knob, is plastic on the inside, and it started to bend in the wrong spot, and seems to be worse then it wad before. But before this, I cut the inside dust boot up a little to allow some more play with the stick, and also removed the lower dust shield and cut that as I needed for more play in the stick but felt it wasn't enough to compensate for the needed movement. I'm thinking of I get a good pipe wrench, and a long enough cheater pipe, I can bend the shifter stick to the needed location so I can shift with ease again. Please, if you have any suggestions, recommended easy fixes, even links of problem solvers, please share. I'm able to drive it but it's petty tough for some gears, and don't want to stay stuck in a gear if I can't move the 4x4 lever 4hi if I don't need to. Thanks buddy

I wish I had some solid advice for you how to fix it, but I don't. I only have experience with the one vehicle we did the body lift on and that was an automatic. Sean has an automatic too and doesn't have any issues. I find it interesting that you're having issues shifting. I can understand that the shifting boot might need to be altered because it gets stretched tighter but why would the shifter itself need to be altered. The body is coming straight up so the shifter should have the same amount play all around it still. But when I think about it more, because the body is higher above the transmission now, the pivot point is lower and you won't get as much throw out of the shifter. Automatics don't have this issue because the shifter is just connected to linkage that you can adjust easily to compensate for the lift. How much of a body lift did you do? Even if you didn't buy a Toytec lift, maybe call them and ask for their advice. They have been pretty helpful in the past answering questions. I hate to say it but your best option might be to remove the body lift and do a suspension lift instead. Let me know what you come up with.

This is a O2 what is that third generation sequoia it's, new to me great inside, a great frame and with 196000 miles. First spark plug change, installed iridium for that size engine ,flushed oil with changed to Full synthetic high mileage oil from Walmart brand. New power steering pump with used rack and pinion. It is cold here in upper mid-east around the Great Lakes. In the spring I will do the lift with new struts and shocks. And clean the frame and coat it with fluid film to help the frame from rusting out, like my old 1996 4Runner all still works but frame! Have a great day and new year

Hey William, good luck with all the planned work. It really is terrible how the road salts destroy vehicles. It's too bad they can't come up with an affordable alternative to salt. The way I understand it, they use salt because it's plentiful and inexpensive. But, it's not inexpensive for the people who's vehicle die an early death due to frame rot. Happy New Year back at you. And, Happy Wrenching!

Good point. We're so caught up in the mechanics of doing something we forget to show the fruits of our labor. The problem with a lot of these jobs is we're finishing them a night time because they take us so damn long to complete. We also did a Toytec suspension lift for the same guy and I don't think we showed what the vehicle looked like afterward because we were so tired. I think we finished his suspension lift at 11pm. It was an all day affair. But, I'm still in contact with Eric, so I wonder if I can take some pictures and post them up for people to see.

@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 5 жыл бұрын
This means you're steering shaft is a little bound up. This is common after installing the spacer between the rag joint. Loosen both the upper and lower pinch bolts for the different halves of the rag joint and hopefully they will release a tiny bit and take pressure off the shaft. Basically, when you installed the spacer puck and tightened the two bolts bringing the two rag joint halves together with both pinch bolts tight, you ended up pulling tension on the shaft making it tighter giving you a stiffer feel at the steering wheel. Once the tension is released by loosening the pinch bolts and then re-tightening them should release the tension and you should be good to go.

Just an FYI for you. thread the new rag joint spacer bolts in first then drop the spacer on, let the new(longer) bolts drop down far enough to line up the upper rag joint plate, push the bolts back up and thread the nuts on. This allows you to reassemble as it came from the factory. Whether or not its important I don't know, i just figure there is a reason they do things a certain way at the factory, hope this helps.
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 7 жыл бұрын
Good technique to get the longer bolts in the factory direction. I'm not a mechanical engineer but I'd venture to say the bolt is just as strong in either direction. The direction is not the issue but the grade of the bolt. Hopefully ToyTec chose a bolt that either meets or exceeds the grade Toyota originally used to assemble the rag joint. Thanks for commenting and contributing information for this repair.

I personally wouldn't put a body lift on my rig. I'd just do a suspension lift if I did anything. I'm still all stock. I'm toying with the idea of a suspension lift but questioning whether I really need it for how I use my rig. And, with suspension lifts comes issues like increased CV angles that end up ripping your boots, having to adjust the panhard bar with a bracket or an adjustable bar, needing to extend brake lines, etc.

Hey Lance, I know what you're talking about. I just found it weird that you end up having a bolt head in-between the radiator and the body now with the bracket they provide. It just didn't seem right to me so that's why we decided to drill holes for the bottom connections so the radiator sucks back flush against the body like before without a bolt head sandwiched in-between. There's also a chance the bodies of the 3rd Gen years are a little different and things lined better on your 1999 than on Eric's 2002. By the way, I called ToyTec and told them their instructions were seriously lacking for the radiator drop. I recommended they provide more pictures and clearer instructions on how the drop bracket is suppose to work. The guy I talked to agreed the instructions were lacking and I wonder if they ever did anything about it.

I don't know what you're talking about when you say redo the whole system. I'd only replace parts if they're broken. An AC compressor is very expensive. If you open up the system to do repairs, you'll need to pull a vacuum on the system and use a manifold gauge to properly recharge the system. I'm not an expert in AC work but I've read a lot about it and understand it pretty well. The EPA has strict rules regarding refrigerants being expelled into the air. You're technically suppose to have the system evacuated by a shop that can capture the refrigerant if you still have refrigerant in your system before you work on it. When the opportunity arises, we will do work on 4 cylinder 3rd Gens. We just did a couple videos on our buddy Jordans's 4 cylinder 5 speed 3rd Gen. We installed headers and did a steering rack guide replacement.

Hey Raymond, the transfer case shifter is fine. It doesn't need to be extended, The shaft of the shifter is fairly long so the body lift has no negative effect on the shifting function of the transfer case or transmission.

Hi there! I plan on doing brakes on my 17 TRD Off Rd. Thinking about just going to the dealer and using the stock Toyota rotors and pads. To many choices online. Any thoughts? Great vids!
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 4 жыл бұрын
You can't go wrong with OEM. Here's something to consider though. You can mostly likely get your rotors resurfaced at a shop for around $15-20 each. They put it on a brake lathe and as long as they can achieve a perfectly smooth surface and still be over the minimum rotor thickness stamped on the rotors, you can reuse those rotors and save yourself some money. The shop should be able to tell you before they take your rotors if they will be able to resurface them and maintain the minimum thickness. They will measure them with a micrometer. This front brake service video was done on a 1st Gen Tacoma but it should help you out because disk brakes set-ups on these Toyotas will be very similar: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hM6Rfcagu5vMZGQ.html

Hi Tim When I was doing some restoration work on my 2001 4Runner i noticed that the 3rd body mount lower section did not come in contact with the bracket off the frame. I was quite puzzled with this as the 4th body mount lower mount sat tight to it's frame bracket. Keep in mind they are identical with the bolt length and inner bolt collar. I tried to get an answer from Toyota about this which only ended up being a waist of time as they were not eager to share any of their design secrets. You probably noticed this difference in the mounts when you did the modification to this vehicle. Any thoughts as why they may have done this to the 3rd body mount?

Tim, have a question for you. I bought a 98 4runner three months ago and have done several upgrades to it already. It came with a "two inch lift". I just assumed that it was a suspension lift because in the description the seller said it has rear Toytec progressive springs and Bilstein 5100 height adjustable shocks in the front. Now that I own it and have been working on it, have seen that it has a body lift, either 1.5 or 2.0 (not sure). The Bilstein shocks up front are positioned with the C clip on the highest adjustment ring. I am just assuming at this point that the strut coils up front are original (don't see the yellow/blue or yellow/yellow color marks) and that the longer Tundra TRD coils are still something I need to put on at some point of time. Here is the question....When I eventually buy some new springs for the front and need to set the height adjustment clip for the new shock, what ring do you think it should go on? Don't want the front end pointing at the sky and might not even mind if the front is slightly lower than the rear. I could do some trial and error but if I can avoid pulling the strut and re compressing the spring to try new settings it would sure make my life easier. Thanks for the video, I now understand why the lower radiator hose is all distorted looking on my truck, they didn't lower the radiator at all!!
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Kevin, you might just have to do some calculations based on what your current ride height is and make the necessary adjustments based off the new spring height and weight rating and where you want the front end height to end up when you're all done. Because the fronts are on the top perch, I'm guessing the rear springs have been changed out for a higher ride in the rear as well. You could search the Toyota forums like toyota-4runner.org and ask how much of a lift you'll get based off the shock perch height and the spring you're using. So, what I'm trying to say is I can't give you any type of definitive answer because there's lot a variables involved. Sorry I can't be more helpful. I think you just might have to do some trial and error to end up with the ride height you want which obviously is more work for you. An air impact or cordless impact would make this process much easier.

@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 2 жыл бұрын
You can probably get away with not disconnecting those items but I would be extremely cautious. Those items def need to be disconnected when installing a body lift because you’re going above and beyond the body lift size that is being installed and lifting the body upwards of 2” is a lot. Just separating your mounts and lifting the body a tad shouldn’t be too bad. But definitely take caution and be careful. It’s always best to be safe than sorry and those connection points you mentioned are easy to loosen and tighten back up. Mark the shifter connection to ensure you get it back in its happy place..
@jamismoyify
@jamismoyify 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I'll probably just disconnect them to be safe. Also in you noted in the video that the front and rear bumpers are connected to the frame, and thus will leave a gap when doing a body lift. Correct me if I'm wrong but on a stock truck the rear bumper pieces are connected to the body right and should move with the truck? An aftermarket steel bumper would be connected to the frame though.

No. With a 2 inch body lift. things get a bit stretched but the filler tube shouldn't leak, at least it isn't something I have heard being a problem. The filler tubes start off as metal from where you fill your gas at and then they turn into rubber hoses under the rig closer to the fuel tank. If there's a leak, I'd be looking at the connection of the metal pipes to the rubber hoses.

I think I’m your video it shows the lower radiator hose that was kinked up? Was hoping to avoid a BL but I don’t want to put more stress on my CVs. So that’s one positive for a BL right? @TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 6 жыл бұрын
Saroun Sam Wow, 305s with a 3 inch lift. I just put a 3 inch lift on my 98 and was considering 285s until I put them up against my rig and they just looked to big and I'd have rubbing issues. I was going to buy 285/75/R16 but just decided to go with 265/75/R16. It basically gave me an inch taller tire and they look fine with my lift. It's hard to say if you'll have lower radiator hose kinking problems with the 1 inch body lift. With Sean's rig, he didn't use a drop bracket for his radiator and it was definitely kinked with a 2" body lift lift. We just cut the hose down a bit so it wouldn't link anymore so that's an option too that we didn't mention in the video. But, he had to remove the lower part of his fan shroud, because without the drop brackets, his fan would grind on it. The lower shroud just clips in place. He never had any overheating issues so maybe it's ok to remove the lower section of the fan shroud without without any penalty of higher engine temps. You'll just have to try it out and see.

Saroun Sam The double cardan joint is a difficult one because the replacement parts are next to impossible to source. People have successfully done it, but the consensus is the available u-joints are and inner joint are inferior and will fail prematurely. Most people just either find a used drive shaft at a wrecking yard or they buy an aftermarket driveshaft like a Tom Woods.

I do have a 4th gen (just bought a few months ago) and if it was feasible, would love for you to help but I live in So. CA. I believe you're in the bay area? I was looking to do a suspension lift (2-2.5" all around) and hopefully a body lift if needed. I couldn't find any videos of a body lift for the 4th gens and stumbled upon yours, which should be somewhat similar, I hope. There is a great write up on toyota120 boards but nothing beats a perfectly filmed, and instructed video like yours. I do have a question on a body lift though. As mentioned earlier I would like to do a 1" body lift on my 4th gen, but my concern is I don't want my bumper sitting 1" lower showing a gap between the bumper and body of the vehicle. After you completed this body lift, does it sit 2" lower due to the body lift or does it still sit rested at the factory position with no gap in-between? If I'm not mistaken the tow hitch does sit lower away from the body because it's mounted onto the frame and not the body. Also if you ever have the chance, a great instructional video that most 4th gen T4R owners can gain from is the infamous transfer case o-ring replacement. =)

You have to drop the radiator down to compensate for the body lift or remove the lower section of your fan shroud so the fan blades don't hit, and also cut the lower radiator hose a little so it's not kinked. Certain wires will be pulled tighter. The highest you can go without having to lengthen wires from the chassis to the body is 2 inches.

Quick question?? What will I have to loosen on a manual transmission?
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 5 жыл бұрын
For the manual transmission, I don't think you have to do anything. The shifter goes directing into the trans so there's no linkage to adjust. The only issue I can see is if the body being up higher is going to hinder the throw of the shifter and not allow you to engage all the gears. If it does hinder the shifting, I'm not familiar with what people do to rectify that. Maybe ask this question on T4R.org to find out if there's any issues with shifting a manual transmission after a body lift. Somebody will know the answer.

@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 7 жыл бұрын
Go with a suspension lift. A body lift is affordable but it offers no performance upgrade other than more wheel clearance for running bigger tires. When you get a suspension lift, you can get upgraded springs and shocks for better off-road performance. However, suspension lifts aren't without their problems. When you lift the vehicle higher than stock height, things change like the angle of your CV axles and your rear end will be pulled a little towards the passenger side because of the panhard bar. For the CV axle angle, you can get a 1" differential drop but you're still operating at a slightly steeper angle. Being at a steeper angle is harder on the joints and they tend to wear out quicker and there's also a chance of ripping CV boots when the ribs of the inner boot rub together due to the steeper angle. In our CV Axle Reboot video, we show a way to extend the inner joint boot so the ribs aren't rubbing together anymore. This stretches the boot a little further putting more stress on the rubber and it's our hope it will last longer than leaving the boot ribs touching creating friction and tearing the boots over a short period of time. For the rear end issue, there's several ways people address it. Some add a panhard drop bracket that is bolted and welded onto the passenger side mount getting the rear end centered again. Some go with an adjustable panhard bar that they so they can dial in the rear end spacing and get it centered again. Some go with a bracket and adjustable bar. Recently, somebody on the toyota-4runner.org forum fabricated a set of weld-on brackets for the panhard bar. It utilizes a short lift bracket on the driver side mount (I think 1") and a drop bracket on the driver side with two bolt up points (1" drop or 2" drop). Anyways, a super long response but I wanted to give you a little heads up of the issues that go along with a suspension lift. With only a 2" lift, you're not changing things too drastically but I'd still opt to do the 1" differential drop in the front and get the rear end re-centered with either an adjustable panhard bar or drop brackets.

When guys have decided to put headers on their 3rd Gens, they end up cutting the crossover pipe out with a reciprocating saw. I would say you're easiest way to get the crossover pipe out is to pull the transmission. You could use our Transmission Replacement series to accomplish that. While you have the transmission out, you might want to consider replacing the rear main seal on your engine. Pulling the transmission out isn't really technical or difficult. It's just time consuming. With a friend helping you, you might be able to knock it out in one day but maybe set aside a weekend and you'll get it done. If there's an actual hole in the pipe, that's a different story. Have you investigated where the leak actually is? One trick I have heard people do is hook up the exhaust side of a shop vacuum to the tail pip of their rig. They turn on the shop vac and that positively pressurizes the exhaust system. Then you can go in with a soapy water solution spraying the connections and looking for bubbles.

There's a pinch bolt for each side of the rag joint. Loosen the upper one that secures the rag joint halve to the steering shaft. What happened is you tightened the two halves together with the supplied bolts after inserting the spacer puck. You probably tightened the pinch bolt first, followed by the two bolts that hold the rag joint together. The rag joint halves weren't completely mated together when you tightened the pinch bolt. As you tightened the two rag joint bolts, you ended up pulling tension on the steering shaft, causing the tight steering. By loosening that upper pinch bolt, the rag joint will find its neutral place again on the steering shaft, detensioning the steering shaft. You should be able to rectify this very quickly.

@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Rob, lots of guys do a combo body lift and suspension lift. With the body lift, you get more wheel clearance which is nice. You will have however have a 2 inch gap now between your bumpers and body unless you makes some custom adjustments to how they are mounted. A body lift also stretches your vehicle wiring to it's limits but it's usually not a problem. A 2 inch body lift is the max before you're forced to do some custom things for wiring harnesses that just don't have that much free play to stretch anymore. So yeah, a combo body and suspension lift is fine. I personally don't care for body lifts, but that's just me. Sean likes them and has them on 2 of his rigs. It's great to hear our channel is inspiring purchases of 3rd Gen 4runners but I guess it does make sense. If you have a library of videos that will help you work on your chosen vehicle, I could see how that could influence a DIY type owner to make a purchase of one vehicle over another. Happy Wrenching Brother! If you have more questions, just ask.

Trust me.. I WAS certified GM ASE, and I was never a fan of the blind finger method. I am thinking now that body lift is out of my to do arsenal, but two more questions if I may. First, is the diff drop kit a smart idea for the 2 inch lift so that the cv's are not bound? And second question...How Essential is the adjustable panhard bar with a simple Bielstein or Old man Emu lift (2 inch all around)? Will there be that much play that I need to be concerned? And once again, thanks for your help. I already have your suggested tools after part one and two of your timing belt change on order. Your videos are positively amazing!!

@@robklopp6663 The body lift definitely makes dealing with the rear upper shock mounts more tolerable but if you have some flex head box end wrenches, it's not so bad. I think the diff drop is a good idea for a 2 inch lift in the front. It will help keep your CV boot ribs from rubbing and causing a premature failure of the boots. As for the rear, I think you can get away without doing anything with the rear panhard bar. I'm running OME 906s on my 2000 which raises the rear 2 inches and it's fine. If you wanted to do anything though, I'd install an Eimkeith panhard lift bracket on the driver side to get the panhard bar sitting a little more level. On my 98, I have over 5 inches of lift in the rear so I have the lift bracket welded onto the driver side axle as well as the drop bracket welded onto the driver side frame.

With the rock sliders already welded on, they will get in the way of your ability to lift the body by getting under the body pinch welds. Well, you're body went up and inch and your shifter which plugs directly into the transmission stayed put. That drops the articulation point of your shifter 1 inch downward in relation to the body and is why you can't shift into those gears anymore. The shifter lever is contacting the cut-out hole in the body before the gear engages. I did some quick research and I think the answer to your issue is installing a short throw shifter kit. It will raise your shifter back up around 1-1.5 inches. LCE Performance makes them. Here's a link: www.lceperformance.com/Short-Shifter-Kits-s/1582.htm Let me know if it works out for you.

TheThreesixty The rag joint on the steering shaft is the culprit. Loosen both pinch bolts and move the rag joint up a fraction. The steering shaft is binding causing the tightness in the steering shaft. Once you find a more neutral location for the rag joint on the steering shaft and steering rack gear, your steering effort should be back to normal. If this makes sense, when you bolted up the rag joint, you're basically trying to stretch the steering shaft because the rag joint is sitting down too far and that's putting strain on the ujoint above causing the steering effort to be harder. If you have more questions, get back to me. Please let me know if this fixed your problem.

It could be a lot of things. Quite often, it's as simple as rechecking your wheel balancing at a tire shop. A high percentage of the time, the wheels are out of balance. Another possibility is control arm bushings, mainly the front lower ones. If the bushings are worn, they can cause a front end shimmy. It could be a bad wheel bearing. Check all 4 wheels for bearing play by grabbing at the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock positions pushing and pulling with opposing force trying to detect any play. There should be no play. It could be worn bushings for the front differential support arm mounts. Finally, it could be something your buddy replaced and didn't properly tighten. Recheck your work. Good luck. I hope you figure it out.

@@davejones4524 I don't have any other ideas for him. Just so you and your buddy know, it's pretty impossible to diagnose bad control arm bushings by just looking at them. You have to take the component off the frame and then you can examine and manipulate the bushing to see if it's bad. I did this recently with my 2000 4runner. I had a front end shimmy that wheel balancing did not fix. I suspected my LCA bushings were bad based off the symptoms, age, and mileage. I was right. On both LCAs, there was one bushing that was ripped and had gross play. I installed some Whiteline poly bushings, got an alignment and my front end shimmy was gone. If I were him, I'd take the rig to another tire shop and have them check the wheel balancing. Some shops are better than others. Also, has he gone through any mud recently? A build-up of dried mud on the inside of the rim could throw off the wheel balancing big time. If that doesn't work, I'd suspect front LCA bushings. But, I guess I should ask, what does the vibration feel like? Does he feel it in the steering wheel? Is this just something he's hearing or does he feel it? A little more explanation of the vibration symptom might help.

It's long enough. You've got your linkage bound up. Loosen the 12mm nut that attaches the shifter lever arm to the transmission linkage. Make sure the transmission is in park and the shifter is in park. Now tighten the nut and you should have reset your linkage and it should shift right.

Were the radiator supports supposed to be loosened before lifting the vehicle? I can't tell yet what burst, but I didn't loosen the radiator and something burst and a lot of liquid under pressure began spewing out from the front of the vehicle. I immediately dropped the jack and then the spewing subsided slowly. Not sure what it was just yet.

Figured out what happened. I have an after market bumper and there's a notch cut out for the high pressure A/C line, I believe. Since the line is at an angle, when I lifted the body, the metal bumper was making contact and eventually broke the line. Not really sure what I need to do now

How do you change a power steering pump on a 99 Tacoma 3.4 L
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 7 жыл бұрын
Well, I've never done one but I can give you a pretty good idea. First of all, remove the belt that powers it. You can reference our drive belt video to learn how to remove the belt and properly adjust it when you get the new power steering pump back on. Next, you'd have to disconnect the send and return fluid lines from the pump. I recommend using a flare nut wrench for these fittings. Finally, you remove the bolts that hold it onto the engine and pull it off. It's as simple as that. Before you go out and replace the pump, what are the symptoms leading you to believe the power steering pump is bad? It's pretty common the screen on the bottom of the power steering reservoir gets blocked up and starves the steering rack of fluid causing a whining noise and sometimes stiffer steering. If you're have these types of symptoms, take a turkey baster and remove as much fluid out of the reservoir as possible. Maybe a syringe with a small plastic tube connected to it could drain it even further. Now take a flashlight and look down in there. If you see a bunch of black crud blocking the screen, you should remove the reservoir, clean it out as best you can with some carb cleaner of something similar like brake cleaner that dries clean and see it that fixes your problem.

Do you have any videos how to change a power steering pump on the 99 Tacoma 3.4 L
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Justin, no we don't but it can't be that hard. You need to remove the drive belt first and you could use our drive belt video for that. Then you have to remove the send and return lines to the pump and finally remove the bolts that hold the pump onto the engine. After you get the new one in, you can use our steering rack replacement video to see how we worked the air out of the system and topped off the power steering fluid level. But before you do all that, what symptoms are you getting? It could be the screen on the bottom of the pump reservoir is blocked up with crud and starving the steering rack of fluid. Draw out some of the fluid with a turkey baster or possibly a syringe with a rubber tube attached and then grab a flashlight and look down into the reservoir. If you see a bunch of black crud blocking the fine mesh screen on the bottom, a cleaning might fix your problems. This is a common problem especially for people who don't renew the fluid on a regular basis. It's pretty easy to remove the reservoir. You remove the return line and then I think there's 3 bolts or nuts that hold it onto the pump. Once you get the reservoir off, you can shoot some carb or brake cleaner inside to clean up the screen and then reinstall. There's an o-ring for the connection between the reservoir and pump so make sure that's in place when you reassemble. Then go through the bleeding procedure we outline in the steering rack replacement video. Let me know how it goes.

Timmy The Toolman So i just finish the lift but then my steering became stiffer when turning is that normal or did i do something wrong?
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 6 жыл бұрын
You didn't necessarily do something wrong. This is a common issue after a body lift. The rag joint is pulling too much tension on the steering shaft. Loosen the pinch bolt for the upper half of the rag joint so the steering shaft can slide free a little bit upwards to take tension off the shaft. Or, you could loosen the lower pinch bolt and let the hole rag joint move up a little. Just make sure the lower half of the rag joint is grabbing enough of the steering rack gear. Once you make this adjustment, your steering should free up. I have a feeling you tightened the pinch bolts first and then tightened the two bolts that hold the rag joint together. If you would have tightened the pinch bolts last, the rag joint would have come together tight without pulling tension on the steering shaft.

I've heard shops charge charge around 6 hours labor for a job like this but it's definitely going to depend on the shop. Also, shop rates can vary quite a bit as well depending where you live. Labor rates in the California Bay Area where I live are anywhere from $100-$150/hour. You'll most likely need to contact a 4 wheel Drive shop that does lift installations because I can see regular automotive repair shops not doing this sort of job. Of course you can do this yourself. I would say the instructions for the radiator drop weren't the greatest and left us guessing but the rest of it was pretty straight forward. Having a least one person helping you would make it much easier.

@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 7 жыл бұрын
The one critical part is putting in the lift puck for the steering. Make sure the steering wheel is locked so you don't screw up your steering wheel alignment and make sure the bolts that hold it together are tightened enough so they don't come loose. Like I said, the instructions for the radiator drop weren't the greatest and we ended up drilling some holes so we could fasten the radiator to the body better. Everything else is pretty straight forward. It just takes a decent amount of time to do. Just follow how we did it in the video and you should be fine. Like I said, get a buddy to help. Maybe one of your fishing buddies. I checked out your video where you lost the tarpon.

Depends how steep of an incline. If it's really severe, the weight of the body pulling towards the downhill direction might give you some issues getting the body mount bolts out and back in.
