On 17th of November 2013, a Boeing 737 operated by Tatartstan Airlines have crashed upon its approach to Kazan airport. All 50 people that were onboard have died.
This reconstructions is fully based on the official investigation report by IAC. Based on the IAC report, the main reason behind the crash, is the fact that pilots were not aware how to go around during landing.
Comments have disabled due to the fact that all possible feedback and reports have already been issued and hence there is nothing more to add to it.
Previous opinion on the reasons behind the crash include;
1. President's son was drunk and sat in the cockpit
2. Jammed helm
3. Frozen oil cylinders
4. Terrorist attack
NONE of these assumptions turned out to correct.
FAQ:
1. It's impossible that the captain wasn't aware how to use TO/GA
IAC report on page 242 states that captain was under impression that they will magically be saved at a press of a button.
It is very likely that captain expected the auto-pilot to do the job automatically. This would have then included thrust control, aircraft positioning, etc. He wasn't even aware that the altitude for automatic go around wasn't set. More so, reliance on TO\GA is proven by the fact that not once within 25 seconds after engaging TO/GA has the crew touched the helm.
2. Did the captain buy his license?
This is correct! At the time of appraisal, this was possible thanks to bribery, etc.
3. Why does my smartphone locate me better than a flight computer?
Back then they used inertia based system, that required base values to be put in before flight. Satellite systems were not in use at that time.
4. How can you possible ignore the PULL UP commands by the computer?
This is one of many mistakes, carried out by the captain.
