Interesting. Had not heard of the underground grottos or chapels before. Cemeteries can certainly be interesting places. Particularly the older ones.

To what extent they existed hard to say but I began to get clued into them from a Charleston native who visited their grotto chapel in Bonaventure often until it was closed off. Glad you enjoyed. #history #stories #savannah #chapel

It's a shame the grotto chapels were filled in. Do you know of any grotto chapel in any American cemetery still intact?

Asphaltrox, thank you for commenting. As to an absolute record? No concept on the breadth of their popularity or total build picture nationwide. Just to clarify and apologies for any potential confusion, but the Grimm vault was merely bricked up and not "filled in." That was the case of many or large slabs placed over the stairwells. There are some still intact, merely closed to the public.
