I used to do road and trail run before started climbing, and I swear by my Coros watches. They have great value and support from a company that cares, GPS lock in very fast and set a high standard for long battery life. I sold it after I stopped running because I don't like to wear watches when I strength train and climb. That time they started to introduce climbing GPS tracking, cool to see how far it has come and the climbing community started exploring them.

They’re genuinely great. Being able to go into the back-end and create your own workouts is great for when you hit the gym. You literally just “start today’s workout” and can fine tune so that you just press one button between exercises: programming in rest etc if/when you want, reps/secs per exercise etc. I’m using it for every session now and it’s great to see the data. Thanks for writing and watching the vid though, your support means a lot

This video really helps me understand momentum / coordination versus raw power. Even when alex is on the campus moves the engagement through the legs, hips, core and like a wave of momentum that carried into the arms. It is really cool to observe, and it is so hard to replicate (until I practice more).

Excellent and very helpful video, as always. I particularly appreciated Alex’s campus board demo. As a novice climber, I found this intimidating at my gym. But now that Alex has pointed out that you can start out using your feet on the rungs below, I will attempt it. Thank you so much, your content is always so clear and helpful.

Great video, i have a Coros as well and love it. Super durable and very accurate. I use it when running, biking and weights but have yet to use it other than a watch when doing any kind of rock climbing work out. From what i understand it has a sport climbing workout. How do you track hang boarding, power, and other climbing stuff through it?

Hi Alex, Robin. I love your videos but I'm only a casual climber that climbs during a 2 hour session once per week. I'm wondering what you would recommend to get try and increase my overall skill and strength within that 2 hours. Would you recommend a warm up followed by 90 minutes of climbing which includes working on different types of boulders (slab, overhang, etc) or would you try and get some trying into that 2 hour session and try to ramp up the training over time without cutting into time allowed for actual climbing. Thanks in advance, both of you come off as such lovely people.
@roapcoaching917

Thanks for watching! As a casual climber, the best thing you can do is expose yourself to as much variety as possible, so more time climbing. The principles in this video still apply, steeper climbing will encourage faster strength and power gains, but it’s important you climb all angles and styles. If possible, increase your exposure too. Climbing 2-3 x a week will see you improve dramatically!

Not sure if you guys reply to these but I'm really struggling to push through with my lower hand when training on the campus board. This is mainly due to pain in my wrist when it extends to the end of it's range. Have you encountered this and know any good ways to fix it? I have been to the physio but not had much success from the rehab. Thanks Alex/Robin :)

We do indeed! Check out @theclimbingphysio on Instagram. His name is Paul Houghoughi and does remote assessments. Most importantly, he’s fantastic and will, certainly, be able to help. Could be that your TFCC is being aggravated by it? Fingers crossed you get in touch with Paul. Don’t let your other experiences with Physios deter you from seeking professional advice!

What days do you add gym exercise (weights etc) and how you mix it with your climbing training in that day? Also resting days than you
@roapcoaching917
@roapcoaching917 3 ай бұрын
Great Q! Depending on the season, we can be hitting the weights gym 3 x a week or once. In rock season, we typically go 1 or 2 x a week for maintenance and conditioning. In winter seasons (now) we are hitting the weights gym after climbing sessions. We ensure we have at least one full rest day, and the others can be active (zone 2 cardio). If we are in a training phase, we often do weights on our “off” days. The intention is key. I.e. if our aim is to build strength (muscles), then weight training is the priority and we know our climbing ability may take a hit. But in our preparation /training phase, the opposite applies. Thanks for watching.

I am looking at these watches and basically the breaking point for me is that how convenient options there are to measure hangboard workouts. Did you try this out in practice? What I would like to see more clearly, if I set up a max hang training for 10 seconds with increasing weight, is this possible to accurately measure the exact times /weights of the hangs (also my own bodyweight for the day)? So for example, does it automatically measure if I do a hang for longer than 10 seconds, or if I drop a hang at 5 seconds? Or I need to (can? ) add this data manually?
@roapcoaching917
@roapcoaching917 2 ай бұрын
Hey there, thanks for the Q. No, it doesn’t automatically judge when you’re on the hangboard, that would be cool. For that, I’ve always had a digital stopwatch in front of me so I can judge the 10th of a second as best possible. I.e. I lasted 4.6 secs

For the campus board exercise, do you have recommendations for the amount of sets and reps?
@roapcoaching917
@roapcoaching917 Күн бұрын
Super subjective based on experience level, but it is certainly a matter of quality over quantity. We’d suggest 3-5 sets on each side with 1-2mins between sets and 30mins between each side.
