Best to just replace or rebuild the pump and go from there. I always wanted a Zero Turn with a Kubota diesel! I’m always on the look for one I can find cheap with an issue like yours and fix it up myself. You know you can buy turbo kits for them too? Pretty cool stuff haha. Take care!

@@BiffsEquipment reman pump works great! I do have the very slightest miss but I think it's due to injectors. I'm going to run some sea foam in it and go from there. I used your techniques, especially making sure I could cut the fuel and not have a run away diesel. Works great!

Thanks buddy! You can also turn the fuel screw for more fuel as well. As for the turbo setup, I got the kit semi built but then never got back around to it. I have to find time to finish it hopedully mid to late summer. I really wanna put that turbo I have on it. It’s a pain on my tractor as there is almost no room for the turbo so I have to have it clocked just perfectly for the oil drain and charge piping to fit the way I want and it’s still gonna be a struggle. It can def be done though but it’s gonna take more work than I anticipated due to the lack of space under the hood. On a lawn mower you have much more room though, same as like a Kubota UTV and so on so those are pretty easy to turbo. I’ll keep you guys posted for sure once I get back on that project and I’m hoping soon! Best of luck with your project!

What’s nice tho is so far it only really smokes like that when I make it, otherwise it seems pretty normal which is what I wanted.. Sure thing Danny. Sounds like there may be another issue going on tho.. like maybe the Spindles/pullys are not spinning freely dogging down the engine on startup.. or maybe it’s something simple like a clogged air filter keeping torque low. I would check over things like that first but if nothing else helps then you can try this. Just be careful to watch exhaust gas temps as adding more fuel makes them hotter specially when under a load as the more load the more fuel, and a mower like that will keep the engine under a decent load for hours straight and that’s when you gotta worry about melting a piston with adding more fuel like that. With my tractor tho I havnt had any issues with EGT.. I mow for 6 hours striaght but mostly it’s pretty short grass nothing super long so I can’t attest to how it would handle real tall grass at a real heavy load for hours at a time but time will tell.. I plan to add a turbo to it soon tho so that will no longer be a worry anyways once I do 👍🏻

Thanks Andy, I agree.. there is almost NOTHING online about these Pumps.. nobody actually goes through them like I did and explains every little part and piece and shows what I showed.. a lot of the videos they don’t speak English or just don’t explain anything which is what promted me to make this video. As for the plungers the ones I used will work in yours if you have a D902. I left a link in the video description to where you can purchase these plungers from eBay. Check it out, I think they are like $55 each. One thing I noticed is now that it’s getting more fuel it runs rougher when it’s cold, specially when it first starts up.. after it’s warm it’s fine but cold starting is worse and it’s a bit rougher running when cold.. this is normal tho as most Diesel engines don’t run as smooth after increasing the fuel delivery.. my Cummins was the same way when I went with larger injectors but this just means it’s getting more fuel so that’s a good thing IMO lol. In warmer temps it runs exactly the same or once the engine is warm tho it does feel/ seem snappier.. I can’t wait to mow with it for the first time this season to see how it feels under a load as that’s where you’ll notice the extra power/fuel the most.. driving around normally it should act/smoke and run basically the same but once it’s under a load it will smoke more and have more power/torque. I have a turbo I bought also for my tractor but I havnt put it on yet. Been waiting to make a video on the install after I finish building the rest of the turbo kit. Once I add the turbo I think it will start easier when cold also as it will have more air then to clean up the fuel

Thanks for all the information about the issues you had and what you went through to fix it. I’m glad it all worked out in the end.. if you see at the end of my video I had a very similar problem. All the diagrams I looked at did not show which way the plungers went in, so I installed mine 180 degrees off as well.. at the end of my video I show how to check this essentially.. you want to hold over your stop leaver before connecting your injector lines and the fuel does not stop shooting from your injection pump then DO NOT start the engine.. take the pump back out and rotate the plungers 180 degrees because odds are they are backwards.. once you rotate them 180 degrees reinstall the pump again and test to make sure the fuel stops squirting out when the stop lever is pulled.. if this works then your all set to install your injection lines try and start the engine. Hope this clears things up!

Thanks Eric! It will def be interesting to see if/how much extra power I have gained from adding more fuel.. also curious to see how much it smokes when I work it hard under a load like you said. The reason for adding a turbo would be to gain even more power as adding more fuel only helps so much and eventually you need to add more air to burn all of the extra fuel you have added. A turbo will not only add more power but will make tbr engine more efficient and will put it back near its stock efficiency or better. Also a turbo will not make it vibrate anymore than it already does, it’s only gonna add the extra air it needs to burn the extra fuel and output more power.. a turbo is great when doing any type of work with the PTO where the engine is under a constant load.. you’ll really notice the extra power then. The result: One of the rubber fuel return lines developed a pinhole which sprayed directly on the injection pump. All fixed and didn't have to pull the pump.

Haha thanks Josh, yah your correct there aren’t a whole lot of people customizing these engines and cranking the fuel but those who have have been very happy. Hopefully my video helped explain some of that with you.. i’v heard if you back out the fuel screw 2-3 turns you’ll have tons of fuel for making some big power with a turbo but I decided to start with larger plungers before messing with my fuel screw just to try it since there was nobody else really trying that yet and she def gets plenty of fuel now so I can’t wait to boost it and then if I still need more fuel I can always still adjust the fuel screw later on

Hey Dave, my shed is roughly 16x18 give or take a few inches either way.. it does get the job done and worked really well when I first set it up but now over the last 2 years I have quickly outgrown it with tools and equipment so this summer I’m planning on building a new garage, hopefully a 28x32 with 14’ high ceilings or something to that nature, concrete floor where I can actually roll my tool box around and do bigger jobs for you guys. Very cool Dylan! Which shim did you remove the one under the pump? If you remove the one under the pump it will advance the Timing which is what you want if your going for more power.. diesels love timing! The shims inside each cylinder of the pump I believe are for independently timing each cylinder on its own.. the shim under the pump will advance or retard all cylinders evenly.. Iv debated finding a smaller shim for mine myself

Yes Kubota does make a D902(T) for turbo.. but the issue is I have done a ton of research on that motor and it seems Kubota only build that motor for specialized purpose for those who work way up in the mountains where atmospheric pressure is low and where contractors or farmers need that extra power.. so because that engine is not physically installed in any machine it’s extremely hard to find the parts for it.. my original plan was to use the turbo, injectors, turbo manifold and injection pump off that engine but I called everywhere including Messicks and nobody can locate the parts for that engine.. not even the part numbers as it’s still such a new engine :/ so looks like I’ll be designing my own turbo kit but I do plan to use photos of that engine online to base my own turbo setup.. Thanks buddy, on the shims.. the shims are used for timing, some tractors will have them and some won’t, some will be thick and some will be thin, it all depends on the engine and the timing that’s needed from the factory and what they install as a shim to do so. Hope this helps!

I agree with you, every single component on these machines have been tuned perfectly to work with one another efficiently, safely, and reliably. Modifying them always gives you more chances for more breakages and abuse especially when your adding more power.. this mod will certainly hurt fuel economy a bit too but I’m doing it for a test.. I’m curious if there is any extra power to be gained by just giving it a bit more fuel through out there entire RPM band.. so far so good but I havnt worked the tractor very hard yet.. this summer will be a good test when I rip our stumps and mow high grass and put a good load on the engine and Transmisson/pump. There should be a bolt in the side of the engine block near the injection pump with a wire through it. If you cut the wire and adjust this bolt you should be able to add more fuel to the engine from the injection pump by turning it, best of luck!

I know there are turbo kits for the D902 that’s installed in Kubota UTVs and other equipment like that but I havnt seen a turbo kit made for the tractor itself? Are you saying there is one for the Tractor? I am designing my kit based images and ideas I got from online and similar specs to the turbo kits they make for the Kubota UTV.. I havnt had a chance to get back to the turbo project yet as I’ve been far too busy with the barn build but as soon as it’s done I’ll be getting back to it and doing some videos on it. As for the plungers, they are still installed in my BX with no issues as of yet. The video you saw of me plowing snow the plungers are installed and that’s why it smokes so much when I lug the engine, feels like it’s got more torque too but it would be much more beneficial if I had the turbo on there but I’m still waiting. Hey Johnny, The timing and the size of the plungers are different. At the very least I know the timing is for sure. But as far as tearing the pump apart and rebuilding it its the same exact process so no worries there. You can get the plungers either from your dealer or from Ebay.. I would try and stick with Genuine Kubota plungers tho unless your looking for modified plungers like I was in which case you'll have to get non Kubota plungers. Best of Luck!

They are for timing each plunger individually.. it’s set to factory where it’s at and you wouldn’t want to mess with that timing. The only adjustment you’d want to make is the overall timing which would be done by adding another shim under the entire pump itself. Iv never personally done it though.

Hey Mike! Great question.. so I can tell your more use to gas motors.. gas motors as you seem to be aware need to have the perfect air to fuel ratio otherwise the cylinders will dentinate if your running it too lean.. running too rich will cause power loss and bad fuel economy and can also cause issues. With a diesel engine because it does not have a throttle body.. and because they do not have spark plugs.. diesels run souly off the heat of the compression cycle alone, causing the fuel to burn and stay brining.. because of this you can add as much fuel as you want to a diesel and all it’s gonna do is cause it to smoke more (black smoke) which is unburned fuel. The main downside to running too much fuel in a diesel is that unburned fuel creates heat, so your exhaust gas temperature rise and if they rise too much it can litterally melt your pistons.. so instead of a “wide band” to measure Air/fuel ratios like you’d do on a gasser.. a diesel just needs to have an “exhaust gas temperature sensor” .. if the exhaust gas temps get too high then you know it’s getting too much fuel.. if they are low then you know you can add more fuel… As for your last question.. you can force as MUCH air into a diesel engine as possible.. it will not care and will not hurt the engine so long as it can withstand the boost pressures.. diesel engines are incapable of leaning out and blowing up because they always run lean to begin with.. so what most guys will do is they will add as much air into their engine as it can safely handle, then crank the fuel up which will allow the engine to actually make power with all that extra air.. while adding fuel you’ll watch your EGT gauge to make sure your exhaust temps don’t rise too high and then your all set.. diesels are much simpler when it comes to gaining power than a gas motor and require a lot less tunning. Lastly you can and may have to adjust your timing as well.. the more advanced you are with a diesel usually the more power you’ll make.. the more retarded the richer it will run and it will be a bit more sluggish.. so tuning your timing will be based on what your trying to accomplish with the engine. So anyways.. this is why I said in the video that I installed larger plungers so that I could not only get more fuel at a certain RPM or time but could get more fuel through out the entire RPM band.. from here I’ll add a turbo to clean up the smoke and will be able to make alot more power now then stock because just adding only a turbo to a diesel will pretty much do NOTHING unless you have more fuel first for the air to help burn it off to make more power. Hope this helps!

How do you deliver an appropriate amount of fuel through the entire RPM range without an obscene amount of smoke at low RPM before the turbo spools up? What turbo are you thinking about? Maybe you size it small enough that boost threshold isn't an issue?

That’s strange, is your pump also from a D902? Try turning the plungers 180 degrees then test it, it wont hurt anything if it doesn’t work, but it may solve your issue

Your correct as far as each cylinder ok the injection pump being the same as far as plungers and how they go together.. but as far as using larger plungers from a higher go Diesel engine (even if it’s the same class) can be tricky.. For some of these pumps the plungers are a different length and obviously the hole sizes are differnt which is what gives you more or less fuel but the length being differnt also alters the stroke.. so as long as the thickness and length of the plunger was the same, and it came out of the exact same style Kubota pump.. then I don’t see why going up a size would hurt aside from it just delivering more fuel (so long as it’s not too much fuel) the plungers I bought were an upgrade specifically for my engine.. they were tested in it so I knew what to expect when I bought them. I guess what I’d do is if you find the same size plungers , get the spec or measure the hole size of the plungers you have now, then find plungers of the next size up (you don’t wanna go too big or it will run rough and start hard) plus your EGT’s may get high.. I Belive my upgraded plungers were .5 thicker if I remember correctly.. so as long as you stay with a plunger that’s roughly the same larger then you should get very similar results to me

I just double checked.. so the stock size on a D902 is 5mm and the aftermarket/modded plungers I went with were 5.5mm so if you find a plunger that’s the same thickness and length say from a D722 and it’s roughly .5mm larger then you should be all set and should have similar results as me. Lmk how you make out id love to hear!

Oh for sure, if I go from an idle and quickly rip the throttle to full revs it will plume black smoke haha. But what’s nice is it only does it when I want it to, driving/working normally seems pretty normal which is good, it’s exactly what I wanted.. I’m sure when I get into a situation where I’m lugging it good tho I’m sure it will smoke pretty nicely still lol. Thanks for watching!

Hey Dan I’m sorry I’m only just now seeing this message. You have prolly already figured out a solution by now but what I would do is grab a rubber mallet and smack the sides of the injection pump till it pops up out of the engine block. They can be very stubborn sometimes coming out and are bonded to the gasket/shim a little bit. See if that works and I’d love to know how you made out!

Is the lever on the pump itself sliding back and forth easily? It should move very freely.. If it is then it sounds like your issue is with the pump install back into the engine. Check to make sure your pump control lever on the engine is free moving with the pump out of the engine, then double check to make sure that little pin moves freely on the outside of the pump itself.. if both of those move freely when separated then the issue has to be with the way your installing the pump. If the pin on the pump is hard to turn then take the pump back apart and clean it really good, even the smallest piece of debris can make it hang and stick.. use some diesel fuel to assemble the pump thr next time around and make sure it stays as clean as possible during rebuild then try it again .. best of luck!

What’s your EGTs like? 12psi is up there it has to be easily making double the power.. the thing I found about some of these Kubota super mini series like I have is that the heads don’t flow really that great and because of that you can only make so much power by turning the fuel up even with a turbo.. I planned to run around 5psi which would be a huge increase on my small motor. I already have the turbo and started building thr turbo kit but I’m waiting for my side work to slow down till I get back to it and do a video on it so stay tuned later this summer!

@@BiffsEquipment if you have TikTok look at my account, "thatcubkid" 2 days ago I cut the tip off my fuel screw, its pushing 15 psi now, i already ordered the 5.5's and its gonna be smokey. i know the garden tractor pulling guys can port and polish these small heads like crazy, they can about 2x the size of the exhaust and intake. i dont know my egts, another thing, these smaller motors cant push enough boost to hurt themselves, if i remember correctly yours was a d9xx, a few guys pull with them at 6000 rpm and 30+ psi of boost. a good turbo to use for your motor would be like a garrett gt12 or something similar, especially on stock rpm, but yes id say its making double the power lol.

@@cs-gj3yf that’s great to know about the amount of boost they can handle.. basically what they are saying is they can handle any amount of boost they can support through the intake with the intake being the limiting factor not the motor which is dope! Your gonna wanna check your EGTs tho.. you may not be able to hurt it from the boost but too much fuel will kill a diesel specially because more fuel means more heat, the more fuel the higher the exhaust gas temps and the hotter the exhaust gas temps the easier it is to start melting pistons and damaging the rings.. it can slowly eat a diesel up from all the heat from too much fuel under a constant load.. as long as the load isn’t constant you should be ok I suppose but under a long load like s tractor pull or something you can start melting it down or hurting the motor so just an FYI

Hey billy, so the modification I did in this video was only enlarging the plungers.. with the plungers being larger it’s allowing more fuel to be dumped into the cylinders per stroke and keeps it consistent throughout the entire RPM band.. this mod will increase HP up to 5hp potentially if you have enough air to go with the extra fuel to allow it all to burn.. 5HP doesn’t sound like much but it is a TON for a small Diesel engine. As for increasing the RPM.. all you have to do is find the high RPM screw, there will be a low Idle screw witch adjusts the rpm at an idle and another screw close to it which adjusts the max RPM.. both screws should be located near or right Infront of the injection pump near or on where the throttle cable atttaches to the pump. If your doing this just be sure to have an RPM gauge handy so you can turn the screw a little touch at a time and continue checking it with the gauge until you’ve reached your RPM goal. Also I’m unsure of the max RPM for a D1105 but I think it’s close to where you stated.. just be sure by googling the engine model/specs online to see what Kubota rates it’s max RPM for being.. this way you can be the same or just shy of it.. also I would tune the RPM for what the generator on the Miller welder can handle and not just max the engine to its highest speced RPM as too much RPM could ruin your welder/generator if your not careful but too little as you prolly noticed will make it not weld good. As of right now I havnt had any issues with thus mod tho I’m not sure if it would be worth it to everyone. I mainly did it so that I could add a turbo to my tractor which is proving to be a lot of work (as I already started building the turbo kit for it) I still plan to do an update video talking about the injection pump mod tho and giving a quick update as to how it’s been performing. I havnt noticed a huge power gain but when I lug the engine down it does feel like it’s got a bit more torque but hard to say.. i know for sure once I add the turbo tho it def will as I’m def getting more fuel than I was with the stock plungers. Hey buddy, your correct I never got around to making a true follow up video expanding on the results. It does seem to have more grunt now or more torque on the low end, tho it does burn more fuel now tho it’s not terribly more. I def need to get that turbo installed, Iv been talking about installing it for over a year now and just never have the time to take the whole tractor apart to finish the turbo kit that’s about 1/2 way built or so. I really need to get on that. Tractor has been running great tho ever since and she def rolls the coal just by quickly revving the engine from lower RPM to higher. I havnt had any negitive side affects other than that it burns more fuel but once the turbo hers installed it will be as efficient if not more efficient than stock but will have much more power. Hope this helps and stay tuned as I finally pulled out my turbo kit a week or so ago to figure out what else I’m gonna need to finally finish the kit so I am getting ready to finally do it at some point here in the near future.

Yes the delivery tubes can get clogged.. sounds like you need to pull the pump apart and give it a good cleaning.. also be sure that nothing has broke on the inside .. make sure you have no cracked or broken springs too as that’s a common failure in these pumps.

@@BiffsEquipment Thank you. Had one port not shooting fuel once delivery tubes removed. Pulled pump and found the slider side plate was very loose and missing screws. Had a butch of a time finding screws that will fit. Drained the oil but no sign of screws. Not sure what to do from there.

Hey Jacob.. so the electric fan you replaced the belt fan with.. was it the same exact size fan? How can you be sure it’s moving the same amount of air or has the same static pressure as the old fan? You gotta figure when Kubota designs/builds these engines they perfectly tune every part to work just right with that engine .. so if I had to guess I’d say your fan is not outputting the same static pressure through the radiator as your old fan was.. it may have a higher RPM, or seek to blow more air; but once it’s pressed up against a radiator all that can change.. Why did you remove the old fan in the first place? Just curious.. was there an overheating issue before or did you just wanna go with an electric one.. let me know and I’ll try to help the best I can.

@@BiffsEquipment The electric fan is very close to the same size as the belt drive. Maybe a half inch bigger. We did have to do a little jerry rigging to the shroud to get it to fit, but it fits nonetheless. The belt drive fan was doing ok, but on particularly hotter days, the temp needle would get a little higher than operating. If you're interested in what kind of electric fan it is, it's a Spal 30100435. The only factors I think could be the problem is the belt is slipping on the water pump or the radiator is slightly clogged. I checked the thermostat in some 180 degree water and it opened. The only reason I really wanted to go electric is to move more air so I can make more power in the future by doing some engine mods.

Hmm, idk the injection pump shouldn’t make the motor knock, hopefully your motor isn’t on the way out. What color is the smoke? Is it coming out the exhaust ?

@@BiffsEquipment black smoke. I have put 4 new injectors in it. You can take the #1 injector line off an the smoking stops but still has a small knock all 4 has 300 lbs of compression
