I think you'll find it much easier and infinitely cleaner if you just drill a series of closely-spaced holes directly into the lead with a drill bit, around the entire pipe, then chisel-out the lead. Clean-out the loose lead pieces by hand and vacuum the rest of the debris with a wet/dry vac with a HEPA filter, preferably. You can then pry-up the old cast iron flange fairly easily at that point. Using this method contains the lead material to just the area around the toilet drain pipe instead of shooting it all over the room(s) with the grinder. The grinder will still be needed to flatten the top of the cast iron pipe, but at least all the lead will be removed by then. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems the Oatey 43538 and 43539 closet flanges have reduced openings due to the inclusion of the 3 screws that expand the seal. I wonder if those screws are also susceptible to causing solid debris to cling to them. Not a good thing, especially if you have kids who flush toys or Pixi Sticks down the drain. For those reasons, I think I would opt for the "Twist-N-Set" models 43650 or 43651 instead, since there are no screws inside of those flanges.

You speak words of wisdom. I agree -- drilling would be a far less messy and toxic process, and I too wondered about those screws in the Oatey, they do seem like they'd cause trouble down the line. I'm pinning this post, very helpful!

1.) Tighten bolts back and forth for even pressure. 2.) cut off bolts with a hack saw because it’s less messy and leaves a cleaner cut. A grinding wheel sends sparks and dirt everywhere. 3.) Avoid caulking a toilet, but if you do leave a gap in the non visible areas to allow to breathe.

My god, the man is right about taking everything out of the bathroom that you care about. I only had to take about a quarter inch off of the cast iron pipe that was sticking above the floor and it coated everything in a 20' radius in soot. I also noticed that the particles became magnetized and were sticking to my recent drywall work but only very obvious at the screws. I thought it was pretty cool at first until I turned around and looked at the enameled steel bathtub I installed. Do yourself a favor and try to contain the soot and cover anything you care about or anything that's metallic.

@@Bootstrappin Yep! I've learned about 1000 lessons since having to strip my bathroom out including foundation work. I used Goop, the abrasive hand cleaner, and a lot of elbow grease and it did the trick with the instant rust that built up on the textured tub bottom for the most part. Sooner you get at it, easier it is to clean. Walls are still a mess but hoping it will come clean.

I hope the bolts to seal the flange to the pipe are strong enough for years of people crash landing on the toilet. You didn’t secure the flange to the floor itself. That will wiggle loose in time and you are back at the beginning again.

You're not wrong. Unfortunately there was nothing underneath left to screw onto, tried using some long concrete screws sideways, not the best. I then caulked most of the toilet but left the rear exposed if it decides to leak, but at least it doesn't move.

I'm freaking out man. I decided to be brave and replace my toilet and I pulled it off to find an OFFSET cast iron flange that is broken and badly fixed with one of those 1/4 stainless steel pieces like you used. IDK what to do! Do they make offset versions of the Oatey flange you used? I'm having no luck dude. The pipe is WAY too close to the wall. With the offset, it's 12" from center of the offset pipe to the wall so I have to replace it with an offset. Any advice appreciated!
@Bootstrappin
@Bootstrappin 4 жыл бұрын
Hmm that's a tough one, I'll have to research in the morning. For now probably best to put everything back as best as you can and rethink strategy. Off top of my head, can you cut off just the flange part and insert the regular Oatey?
@culley711
@culley711 4 жыл бұрын
@@Bootstrappin Wow, thanks for the reply man :) Good ideas. I've got 2 bathrooms (not to flex) so I can take my time with the fix. I'm redoing my half-bathroom. I don't think I can cut it off and use the regular Oatey because the offset is like a 45 degree angle inside the pipe There's not a lot of vertical space. I found a flange repair thing by 3D Pluming Products on Amazon. $30 and I'll see if that works when I get that in a few days. If not, I'll return it. There are no offset flange things by Oatey for cast iron, so if I have to replace the flange I'll probably have to get a plumber to come do an oakum & lead repair like it's the 1800s! DIY is fun but also wack.
@Bootstrappin
@Bootstrappin 4 жыл бұрын
That sounds like a plan, and it's a huge relief to know you've got two bathrooms lol. If the flange repair doesn't work and if this is on the first floor and you've got basement access, I'd probably just cut the cast iron from down there and convert to PVC.

Same issue, leaded in cast iron flange. Is there no way to break or cut off the top part of the flange, till it's flush with the pipe? And just use one of those compression flanges? Thereby leaving the leaded in joint in place. Do you absolutely have to remove the old flange?
@Bootstrappin
@Bootstrappin 3 жыл бұрын
I think you bring up a good point. Don't quote me on this though. If you can remove enough material just off the top, the compression flange should be able to slip right inside the pipe - the main concern is just making sure that your toilet is flush with the floor. I guess before you start doing any (or too much) of the demo, see if you can slip in the Oatey.
@rustyshackelford9156
@rustyshackelford9156 3 жыл бұрын
@@Bootstrappin thank you for the reply. I'm hoping that will work...I think it will but idk. I'm worried about the breaking the pipe. I'll have to be careful. Mine is a basement toilet so the pipe goes down into the concrete. Wouldn't be good to break it. Thanks again
@rustyshackelford9156
@rustyshackelford9156 3 жыл бұрын
So I finished up the job, it wasn't too hard to remove the leaded in cast iron flange actually. Maybe because my pipe was set in concrete. I hit what remained of the flange a few times with a hammer and noticed it loosened up. Then i just carefully worked the flange around with a hammer and pry bar and it came off the pipe without too much fuss. But i think in a pinch you could definitely just cut the top off and use a compression flange over top. The compression flange is pretty neat and works well. I used the type with a screw in rubber gasket. I found it easier to remove the gasket, place it inside the pipe and then screw the plastic flange into the gasket. Not too bad of a job overall. Thanks for your vid and advice, just wanted to update in case anyone was interested. So many times ive come to youtube in a near panic trying to figure out how to put something back together that i took apart. Take care ya'll

@Bootstrappin
@Bootstrappin 2 жыл бұрын
That's fairly uncommon most likely. Just off the top of my head though, the first thing you'd need to do is find a way to seal the sewage pipe - or else it'll reek! Then, you'd either have to redo the floors, or find the exact tiles they used and kind of surgeon them in, but not before putting a thick piece of plywood down over the (sealed) sewage pipe for structure.
@karunald
@karunald 2 жыл бұрын
@@Bootstrappin Yes - the tile floor is already up and we need to repair some rotted ply. The toilet is confusing me tho and my handyman seems a bit puzzle about it also. Read something about a rubber cap with tightening band on it - that pressure can build up in the system an blow it out? LOL IDK why but I read that. There's just SCANT information on 'permanently' closing a toilet. handyman suggested concrete but he seems perplexed on the concept as well. Which makes me nervous.
@Bootstrappin
@Bootstrappin 2 жыл бұрын
@@karunald the rubber cap is *probably* fine, but it would make me nervous as a permanent solution. Assuming you have a cast iron pipe, you have three options that I can think of: 1) thread the inside of the pipe, and screw a cast iron cap into it with pipe dope 2) traditional iron pipe joining is done with oakum and lead - what you could potentially do (since making threads requires very specialized tools), you could buy an iron screw in cap of the right diameter, grind off the threads if needed, then stuff oakum in there, followed by molten lead - see this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iNRzqqaZuKjVdnU.html 3) just weld a piece of metal in to seal it
