No one really knowns why this is the case, but we often see patients with BPD improve with respect to the core symptoms but continue to have poor overall functioning in life. This is where routine and stability come into play. Having a job or educational activity with a schedule and roles that are clearly defined can bring order to chaos. Many patients with BPD live with chaotic intense exclusive relationships that lack clearly defined roles and structure. This is good advice for any patient who finds themselves in a similar situation.
