In video 1554 I review the new Lishi lock pick designed to fit into the AM3, AM5 and AM7 keyways, commonly found on American padlocks and others. In the video I describe the pick, demonstrate how it works, and show how to decode a lock after picking it.

That was really interesting from a beginner’s point of view. Having the cut markings at the back there & being able to operate it with your finger tip gives a really cool perspective of how you’re moving your pick & what’s going on inside the lock while you’re picking, which isn’t so easy to see with standard pin tumbler picks. Thanks Bill!

That was too cool!! I was doing pretty good with my lock picking when I was holding the locks in my hand, but when I started using the vice to hold the lock to simulate the lock being in a door, the picking got really difficult and I basically had to go back to just the regular pins and take out all of the security pins. So I keep practicing. Lol.

I don't pick a LOT of American padlocks (maybe one or two a year) but I just ordered this pick, based just on how easy the SC1 is to use. I picked up the SC1 Lishi a couple of months ago, I didn't think I'd use it except for the the F series levers with the top T pins (PITA)... The more I played with it though the more I love that tool... ESPECIALLY for the decoding without taking the lock apart. NOW if Lishi would only make an S22/LA (which should be easy enough from how it works) and picks for the Y1 and Y2 keyways (which might be too paracentric for the design, but a locksmith can hope, right?)

Bill, there's a serious problem with the Lishi picks for AM profiles. The top rail of the blade is too high and it lifts any #8 key pins. It also affects the #7 pins to some degree as well. See the BoredLockPicker's channel for a video where we worked this out.

Hey Bill, do to have any absolute beginner videos on SPP?? I've muddled my way thru a few cheap Chinese locks, a Master #3 and a few others raking, even my front deadbolt. But I've got this older American 1400 series I believe that I cannot make open and I cannot seem to get the right tension to even attempt SPP.. also first pin is a serrated keypin. The big issue even trying to rake it open is it has an insane spring in it. I've made a few wiper tensioners but I'm guessing I need a good set of top of keyway tensioners if I want to keep attempting SPP.. any input to get me started is greatly appreciated.. it's just a hobby so I don't want to break the bank. Maybe one day I'll actually win one of your weekly kits. I am getting one of the practice keyways you always show off soon just need a good vise as well. Thanks for all the great videos!!

The european key ways are not as open. However dimple picks are available, but lishi has not made them. I use lishi picks exclusively on cars. Many times I have picked the lock, yes they are all springy why isn't it open... Oh yes I just need to turn it. Picking tension and turning tension are two different things when using these types of tool.

With the ease of action, I'm thinking something like this could well be used as the basis for a completely automated robo-picker. Just slide it in and turn on, and the robo-picker does all the work of tensioning and picking, with highly sensitive sensors detecting the feedback and making very precise movements. I suspect this is doable with current tech, but It would probably be too expensive currently, but within a few years the tech might become affordable enough to be practical.
