Added to the fact that the price of the problems of these tattoos fall on the healthcare. Choosing to do risky eye-tattoo because 'it's cool' and when it goes bad, majority of tens of thousands of euros surgeries goes to the universal healthcare system. Majority of the western world will have to give treatment, even if the patient doesn't have money for it. There should be a clause of "you got it, you pay the treatmen" just like there is now push on smokers via higher taxation on cigarette prices to offset the increased cancer, etc risk. People can tattoo themselves where-ever they want for all i care, but i don't want to be paying when their goofing and playing goes bad. Your choice, your money. I don't get to choose, i don't pay.

There’s definitely merit to this idea that society shouldn’t have to pay for someone’s extreme behavior. I’ve always thought the same when people go paragliding or jumping off of cliffs or whatever. My tax money I shouldn’t have to pay for all that rescuers you have to come get you.

I can’t believe the OP thinks that eyeball tats aren’t risky and shouldn’t affect your eyesight. I’m sorry but what med school do these tattoo artists go to? Medical student here - the eyes and brain are 2 parts of the body that are protected from the immune system. The immune cells that circulate in your blood do not have access to the brain or the eyes because the antigens (signaling molecules on cells) in these organs are entirely different to the rest of the body. If this barrier is compromised, your own immune system will start attacking the organs!! I have no idea why anyone would actively choose to take this type of risk for aesthetic reasons... all it takes is one mistake and you're blind, this could also start entirely new autoimmune conditions in your body because your immune system is out of control. Just because you *can* do something doesn't mean you *should*

Honestly, as someone into heavy body mods, they also just look like sh!t!! It looks all patchy and trashy, and you would probably have to get it redone to get it looking okay which increases your risk soooo much. It straight up just looks bad in a majority of the cases, even if it's done perfectly, because its not a full tattoo, just a few injections that are supposed to spread around.

I have Sjogren's as well as another, more serious autoimmune disease. Because of the lack of moisture in my eyes, my lacrimal and meibomian glands are shot. I deal with erosive corneal dystrophy. I can no longer drive at night and even with perfect diopter correction, I am incapable of 20/20 vision. My eyes are always blurry because of the dryness. I would be thrilled to have my eyes back. Why ANYONE would do this is totally beyond me. Autoimmunity sucks. It doesn't go away, and living each day is a struggle. I promise, it's not worth it. Ask anyone who is autoimmune.

I’ve worked at an eye clinic (not a Dr) and I’m sorry, but getting an eyeball tattoo has to be one of the most foolish moves I can think of. Your eyes are SO delicate. They are intricate and finicky and very temperamental , and when you lose your vision, you can often lose it for good. It’s utterly baffling that people would put themselves at risk of going blind for an aesthetic that can be more safely achieved with contact lenses. It’s your choice, but seriously consider if you would be okay with permanent vision loss or issues that you give to yourself for a style.

I mean laser eye surgery is terrifying. A lot of people have minimal complications, sure, but when people do have complications, they’re deadly. So many people are committed suicide from laser eye surgery. Basically the surgery severs the nerves and you just have to hope they heal back together properly, for a lot of people they don’t. Nerve pain in general is excruciating, now imagine it in your eyes. Patients were also partially awake so we made sure not to speak unless needed. Even the slightest bubble in the needle that could get into the eye would get you yelled at because the eyes are SO delicate. We already have other health challenges in general, why give oneself a high chance of having a medical problem if we can decide ? I love tattoos and body modifications, I have a whole lot of tattoos and piercings and am rooting for anyone else who wants to customize their body. HOWEVER, there are "modifications" that should not exist, should never be performed, and people getting them should be getting serious mental help. I'm talking removing noses, ears, fingers, etc.. someone who wants to remove their nose is, pardon my unprofessional opinion, in need of psychiatric help. Body dysmorphia is something that should never be ignored. It is a serious problem. Yes, it's their body and I support their right to do whatever the f they want, however, these specific intentions tell me there's a deeper issue here that needs to be addressed. Coming back to eyeball tattoos - I feel like that's right there on the cusp of being body dysmorphia. I don't think it's as bad as removing digits to look like an alien, but it's getting there. I would say the cool asthetic of having your eyes tattooed can be achieved in many, far less dangerous ways. It's a huge risk and the payoff isn't always great either. Having said all of that, if you want your eyeballs tattoooed, go to someone who knows how to do it. Do your research. And also, maybe get some help mentally just to make sure you're ok and not slipping away. And honestly this type of modification should require a specific license, but what tf do I know.

Every tattoo artist should have 1 of 2 signs: "Eyeball tattoos are NOT accepted here." or "If you want an eyeball tattoo, you will have to sign a contract agreeing that you are aware of potential blindness coming from it and that we are not held liable for any potential blindness that may happen to you." They have contracts like this in boxing and UFC, so Tattoo artists should too IF they are willing to do them. AND Charge a buttload for them to discourage them, but also just in-case someone does try to sue them, even after signing the contract because you know they will. People lack common sense, critical thinking skills, and accountability. Eye ball tattoos should be like $10k - $100k just to discourage people from getting them in the first place.

Maybe someday there will be a completely safe way to achieve this same effect because admittedly it does look very cool and fantastical.

I was temporarily blind by a vitreous hemorrhage in my right eye. It was so scary and devastating. I can finally see like 90%. Still have blood in the eye that needs to be absorbed to fully recover. This Friday June 14, 2024 I will see my eye doctor again hopefully good news. A while back had a retina eye tear in my right eye that needed surgery twice. I couldn’t see well out of my right eye. Years before that I had Uveitis in my right eye 2 or 3 times again temporarily loss vision. I thought about getting my vision corrected by surgery but some people end up having bad results like eye pain. So I’m not going to. My right eye has had issues too often to risk it. I’m an artist and I enjoy the ability to see and to see more colors than most people. Never ever intentionally do crazy stuff to your eyes like tattoos. Not being able to see is horrible. I even had problems finding things, ran into walls, tables, chairs, and it hurts living like that. Thankfully, all these eye problems with being blind or loss of sight were able to gain sight back and have a full recovery.

I have multiple disabling conditions-physical and mental- and it’s a bit odd having those two perspectives duke it out. As someone with physical disabilities (not blindness though) I will never understand why able-bodied people risk their absolute blessed privilege of health for aesthetics. At the same time, as someone with mental disabilities, I understand how looking in a mirror and seeing something you aren’t happy with can make you miserable. I understand how someone might want to do anything to ease that pain. I can’t really make a decision on which side of me is more reasonable because I’ll never experience having one without the other. It’s something I can’t imagine, so I definitely won’t be judging. Regulations need to be super tight though. Sheltered, impulsive people who just turned 18 who don’t have a good grasp on the word permanence (no shade, it’s part of growing up!) need protecting too.

i cannot speak for every able bodied person, but i can say that my brother and i really admire prosthetics designs and have discussed what we'd get if we ever had to. but it's not like we're choosing to maim ourselves or taking chances on dangerous body modifications, we just genuinely appreciate prosthetic designs. the eyeball tattoos are pretty wild tho... i've known about them and kind of wanted them for a decade now, but i know the risks and just want to wait to get them, if i ever do. i've done contacts for fun and that's enough for me for now lol. i was kind of thinking maybe i'll get them tattooed when i'm already getting cataracts anyways and i feel hypocritical saying this but i agree that 18 year olds probably shouldn't make huge body mod decisions. i'm a hypocrite though because i got huge forearm tattoos as soon as i turned 18 and i just don't regret them personally. so it's not fair for me to say that, but if i had a kid i'd personally encourage them to wait till their mid twenties to do any body mods, just to be safe.

I'm in a similar boat, and I know what you mean. I'm anorexic, but I also have a couple of neurological conditions which have been getting progressively worse. My health was already shit before I developed an ED. I feel this enormous sense of guilt for making my health even worse, just because I have a problem with my physical appearance when I'm at a normal weight. But the causes of EDs go so much deeper than just vanity. I think it's related to my OCD as well as trauma. I think that able-bodied people are more willing to risk their health, just because they take it for granted. Being young also factors into it, due to younger people often being healthier, but also because the chemistry of the adolescent and young adult brain promotes risk-taking behavior, by placing more weight on potential rewards as opposed to potential consequences. When I was 16 years old and healthy, I used to do any kind of drug I could get my hands on, I did my own piercings with safety pins, and smoked cigarettes without giving it a second thought. Now I'm 33, chronically ill, and every single day I get up at 8am, eat vegetables, and drink at least 50oz of water.

One of the main things I keep hearing in these extreme risk body modifications is that they got something because they "felt ugly".. or "feel ugly". Body mods are risky and should only be done to enhance or improve features you already have. Most of these women, and men even, are already above average looking or straight up beautiful already. I have tattoos and I never got then to hide something or make me beautiful; they added to what was already there; and I weighed the risks in the balance. My eye sight never was on the table.. This is sad to me because it wasn't needed. I don't think this should be done period. People who want this please consider. -Shalom

I started out this year by almost losing my vision in my right eye due to a medical issue (unrelated to tattooing). It was one of the most terrifying experiences ever, waking up each morning not knowing if I'd suddenly be in the dark. I'm an artist, so permanently losing even half of my vision would be devastating, as I'm sure you can understand. And losing it in one eye but not the other would destroy depth perception. I knew I was in deep sh-- when my eye doctor gave me her personal cell number and was checking on me several times a day 😮 I was significantly impaired for several weeks, and it took months for the issue to heal completely, but I was lucky. All this being said, I just CANNOT UNDERSTAND how anyone would think it's worth risking their EYESIGHT just to look cool. You wouldn't even be able to see what YOU look like afterward!! Imagine never being able to see a beautiful beach with that clear teal water again. Imagine never seeing your child's face again and them being forever five years old in your memory. Imagine never seeing your mother or father's faces again. All for a tattoo?? I would never be able to comprehend people taking these risks. As an Ophthalmic Technician, I’m horrified. Even the girl who said that you can’t experience pain in the eyes had me rolling. Sure, maybe the 1 mm of sclera may not have pain but if it goes into or near the cornea there will be much much pain. Not to mention anything getting into other parts of the eye causing inflammation. Why mess with it? Even contact lenses have risks. Just get every part of your body tattooed and leave your eyes alone.

I don't have a strong opinion about banning eyeball tattoos specifically, but I do think laws designed to protect people from themselves aren't always a bad thing. What I really want to say, though, is: just because someone committed a crime does not remove their right to privacy from the general public. Maybe he's required to avoid tattooing eyeballs or he's required to provide folks with that information, but I wish people on the internet would drop this idea that everyone else's business is their business. If the crime is not against you and you are not at risk personally, then his face (which, come on, you can mostly see) is none of your business.

When it comes to eye tattoos, it's going to disqualify you from just about anything where you have to deal w/ the public. Okay so I was so intrigued by this that I went deeper into the case of Aleksandra, if you'd like to hear some more of Polish madness. She was invited to some morning TV show where she said that "she never read anything explicit about losing vision after getting a tattoo" but that "she doesn't regret this tattoo at all [even though she lost her vision], only the artist choice". On the other hand, the guy she was inspired by, Popek, heavily criticized her... About the tattoo artist, he only does piercing now (tattoo isn't a medical practice, so he can't get a ban of any kind, law-wise), but the funny thing about the edited photos is that here one can be the most public person in the country, but if media mention them as a crime suspect/perpetrator their surname becomes a letter and their pictures are censored, whether it makes sense in one's case or not. Even the most famous actors etc. I'll never understand tattooing eyeballs, because when all's fine all's fine, but then when some issues arise, doctors will turn you away, since medicine isn't about practices like this and they aren't ready for all the complications that come with such modifications. Terrible cases, truly.

The 'I don't regret it' cop out for literally causing your own blindness really pisses me off.... I'm so over the 'no regrets' thing. Option 1: You are so out of touch with reality that you don't appreciate the importance of your eyesight and how much it contributes to your daily life. Which would put you dangerously close to being an asshole as well. Option 2: You regret it so profoundly that you cannot even being to cope and have to deny it to get through your daily life. I really don't like the body modifications communal mentality of regret nothing. The changes you make to your body can have really profound unknown effects that I bet would 100% change your decision, unless you are the option 1 person.
