Unfortunately, the title of this video is deceptive. It makes it sound like there will be a discussion of the relative merits of bourbon or rye in making the cocktail, but this is not at all the case. He demonstrates making the drink with bourbon and rye is never even mentioned.

Not only that, but Makers Mark and Martini and Rossi - 🤮 If that had been my first Manhattan, it would also have been my last.

He’s sweet and entertaining, but the technique throughout is not good. Measure your drinks, folks. Especially when they’re spirit forward and needing to be balanced. When mixing, add spirit then ice and stir. Pouring over ice dilutes it quicker and you risk watering it down too much. If you’re mixing with a cocktail spoon, hold it like you would a pencil and stir pressing the back of the spoon to the glass. It’ll make your stirring more uniform. 15-20 rotations or until it’s cold to the touch. And for the love of all things tasty, get some good cherries. Do not bother with those radioactive maraschinos. And the syrup is unnecessary. I know this video is old, and it doesn’t really matter, but if anyone happens to stumble upon this, this comment might be helpful.

He writes books on the subject...Like Jacque Pepin when cooking, he's done it so often he knows instinctually how to measure. How ever I like to mix all the ingredients first then add ice in two increments to cool properly. Minor details.

This is the kind of Manhattan that was served from California through Texas and up to Chicago in the Seventies (always Bourbon never Rye). It may not be the "correct" one, but I agree it's the best cocktail in the world.

My sweet lord, that was about 3-4 manhattans in a single glass, but hey, who's complaining?
@tonyn152 Жыл бұрын
Basically the same way I do my Manhattans, but I typically measure 2.5 oz. of rye or bourbon, .5 oz. sweet vermouth, a couple dashes each of Angostura bitters and Fees Cherry bitters.

Wow....this is almost exactly how I make mine...down to the dash of cherry syrup! The only (very trivial) difference is that I pour the bitters into the chilled cocktail glass, then pour the drink into the glass. Well done....disregard the nitpickers. You do give the recipe. I don't understand why foks can't grasp that as an experienced bartender you don't need to measure your pours down to the ML. Geeze.

A professional bartender would have the proper glassware. The size glass he needs is a 7 1/4 ounce cocktail glass. Looks similar to a martini glass but there are differences.

Manhattan is definitely my favorite drink, but for me, I prefer rye over bourbon and heavy on the bitters - 6 or 7 shakes.
@mondoenterprises6710 Жыл бұрын
I infuse my black cherries with bourbon, so there. Also, I like equal parts rye and bourbon. Or pure rye for the purists. Bourbon will do in a pinch. A bourbon infused black cherry enveloped by an orange slice is also a nice garnish. I've also been enjoying mine with equal mix of angostura and orange bitters. But I agree that it may be one of the best cocktails ever. Not that I'd want to drink it all night.

As he just As he freepoured the bourbon and vermouth, I've no idea what ratio that was, a drink that size would have some people on the floor before they finished it, he used a cocktail shaker as a mixing glass, put some cheap -looking radioactive cherries into the drink instead of some quality ones, such as Luxardo, and there was no rye vs bourbon comparison. Apart from that, great job!

Wtf? Talk about a misleading title (link bait) and less than helpful instructions (stir till you think it's done). If I knew how long to stir I'd not need to watch a KZfaq video.
@chrischallans11 ай бұрын
Bourbon makes the drink cloying (especially with this amount of sweet vermouth, which is too much even if using Rye). Maraschino cherries are a lower grade version of the Luxardo, which is superior (the drink should have a hint of DARK red, not light red), and a good Black Walnut or Chocolate/Mole bitters will balance it perfectly. Angostura is classic, but it doesn’t belong in everything. This video is a recipe for the Badhattan.

Don’t mean to sound harsh but videos like this gives bartenders a bad reputation. The “eyeballing” thing might have worked decades ago. Today, cocktails are expected to be well balanced, hence the use of a jigger. The amount of bourbon in the vid doesn’t equal the amount of vermouth (2:1). Drink it if you find it pleasant but don’t expect anyone to pay for it. Also, MM is a very sweet bourbon - why on earth would you want to add syrup to an already (overly) sweet whiskey?!

Umm, why not measure? Misleading title, too. All around terrible video.
