Boy Meets World's Angela Moore (Trina McGee) quickly became one of the most influential Black teen sitcom characters of the 1990s when she joined the cast in season 5 and became one half of the show's best power couple with on-again-off-again boyfriend Shawn Hunter. But as beloved as she was, she still ran into a number of problems both on screen and behind the scenes. So let’s take a deeper look at this groundbreaking character, her lasting legacy, and why so many fans still believe she deserved better.

Angela deserved so much better during her run. Her and Shawn’s relationship was probably the healthiest relationships on the show. Also, Shawn’s actor treated her with the upmost respect and kindness while the others snub her.

I think differently. Angela and Shawn were a trauma bond. Their trauma and troubled history linked them together. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone, so I just don’t feel comfortable endorsing that ship, no matter how good or treated her.

@@KZfaqReady No, they weren't trauma bonding. They never did toxic things to each other. They had more mature things happen to them hence why Shawn took Angela more seriously than other girls. Normal high school girls worry about superficial stuff while Angela seems to be able to communicate a level far beyond that challenged Shawn.

Absolutely loved how the show treated Shawn and Angela's relationship every bit as casually as all the other couples on the show. Their racial difference was never used as a source of either humor or tension and the troubles they faced were only the ones every couple faces at some point. That was REAL progress!

I remember the conservative talking points at the time said that interracial dating wasn't normal in America and liberal media was trying to normalize something that was abnormal for most Americans. As a kid growing up in a diverse metropolitan area, Shawn and Angela's relationship looked normal to me and I started questioning why conservatives didn't want that. It was honestly the beginning of my understanding of conservative "values" when it comes to "purity". You can't unsee that. While interracial marriage is more accepted by conservatives now, we still see them fighting for gender purity, and certainly can't forget those years of them fighting for the "sanctuary of marriage". It all comes back to purity morals that are patriarchal and racist.

Good point. Even now if they were in a relationship on tv every conflict would be centered around race but on Boy meets World there's no wisecracks, centering race, or even weird comments about it as far as I can remember.

I’m Latina, and grew up watching BMW. I loved how the show treated Shawn and Angela’s relationship. It didn’t center around them being an interracial couple, just two people that really loved each that happened to be from different racial backgrounds. My husband is white and our relationship isn’t based on how different our backgrounds are, just how we love each other and bring out the best in one another.

It’s so interesting to me that the 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s had such a myriad of wonderful representation for Black women and girls and until recently there was major regression. You had characters like Angela; bohemian, beautiful intelligent and carefree, Lisa Turtle, Ashley Banks, Laura Winslow, Moesha Mitchell etc. for the last couple of decades Black women onscreen are either invisible by erasure, cartoonishly stereotypical, or a prop/foil to all non poc characters. One of the reasons growing up in this era was unmatched. Black women and girls had the opportunity to be fully realized and fully fleshed out characters onscreen. We were depicted, in all our nuances as human.

@@WatchTheClipsFilm-TvBecause the so called progress Hollywood really only want us around when we fit into their own preconceived stereotypes. Thats why there’s no room for the prude, wealthy, nerdy, or conservative black woman, just the slutty, poor, ghetto, ill-behaved ones that they keep cramming down our throats in music and television. Trina as Angela with her natural hair, styled hair, with lines, and having her own brand of humour and personality is ever a statement. The character is an icon not only for BMW but for TV history, and Trina is a hero for many, including me. I loved her vulnerability with her family when her father was introduced and I remember hearing the audience reaction when she finally told Shawn she loved him. If they could fly through the ceiling, they would. Same here. That they ended is realistic, yes, but I hear many fans say that their relationship is the most realistic one on the show. There can only be one Cory and Topanga yes because there is only one Cory and one Topanga. But Shawn and Angela were different, and fans, many fans, wanted that too. They did work, and they pulled each other through things, and the way they respected one another, reconciled, and put one before the other is an example to many. I like GMW and their characters too. But them writing Angela like that left a bitter taste in my mouth. Of course, Trina pulled it off nicely and you still see Shawn's care for her come through. "Put more of you in the world" was his answer when she asked him if she should have children, and yeh, I cried. But just for what their relationship could have been, but for what her continued character could have been in the show.

In watching this, I’m realizing that Angela has become an archetype for black women characters in mainstream shows. I remember almost the exact same storylines and tropes being used for Mercedes Jones in Glee, down to not allowing her character to have a healthy longterm relationship with her high school boyfriend because that “wasnt realistic” (but like everyone else was able to maintain a relationship with and even marry their high school sweethearts 🤔)

One thing people get wrong is the "life long crush" thing with Topanga. Season 1 just had her as the "weird" girl Cory went to school with. They retconned a lot after season 1, like how his sister disappeared for several seasons. I always loved Trina's character on the show, she was like a slap-in-the-face the show really needed. And they really did do her character wrong. I've only seen a few episodes of Girl Meets World, and what I saw did not live up to the original, much like other shows they tried to do follow ups to. I can't speak for the people that identified with her, nor as someone who could identify with her on race and ethnicity, but I have to say, her being on the show and them not making a big show of her race being contrast with the rest of the cast helped normalizing such aspects in current shows. It gives us a positive look at what a world could be like without the hate so many people jump into (basically conservatives). In one aspect that some might not think about, that I think is important, they normalized her existence in a non-scifi show, meaning it didn't have to be some fantasy, other worldly life that in many ways seems impossible to live in, they gave us a look at our own society and living in the here and now (mostly) without the predjudices we otherwise see every day. Or if needed to put simply, they didn't have to stick her on a space ship named the Enterprise, for her character to be taken seriously.

I watched the show as a kid, didn't really get into it, then a couple years later my younger brother got into it and we used to argue about that. To me Cory had hated Topanga and coming back seasons later it was jarring. He insisted that Cory was always in love with her.

Instead of it being made in and ingorant passing comment, and he was unaware of the connotation of the comment. Will also says that the incident "literally changed my life" in the episode. Also there wasn't an animosity between the cast mates the perceived animosity was created by people behind the scenes. The majority of incidents Trina experienced were from the crew off set. Trina, Ryder, Danielle, and Will expressed sorrow over the lost years of friendships, because of what producer implied about their feelings toward each other were. In the episode the cast talks about the fact that their age differences, and life experiences created a hurdle for them to get to know each other better during the show run. Boy Meets World was such a refreshing show for its time. It managed to capture the exact feeling of growing up and all the awkwardness around it. I'm only sixteen and resonate with it so deeply despite the fact that it was set in the 90s. Even though Cory is the protagonist I think characters like Shawn, Topanga and Angela stole the show. Though I can understand there being a debate about mentioning race, I’m personally glad that it was never a focal point specifically in the friend group because what they went with is kind of an accurate depiction of those types of relationships in my opinion. As a woman of color who grew up with predominantly white friends and partners (honestly purely because we shared the same interests) I don’t remember race coming up as a topic very much at all. I was just one of the girls. We were the “Blondtourage”lmao I know that’s not the case across the board, but the “color-blindness” they’re referring to isn’t too far a cry from what real people experience. With all that being said, the real issues and inequality she experienced behind the screen is still just as important to acknowledge and talk about because real people experience that too.

Plus, I thought that their relationship was really sweet and endearing. I never liked how they handled Angela in Girl Meets World. That was one of the reasons I dropped the show. It never felt like a natural conclusion for their relationship, especially when Angela just wanted to spend time with her father instead of ditching Shawn. I think we need shows were certain situations of a interracial couple are addressed and shows where it makes no difference. Both are needed because one is needed social commentary and the other is the long term goal.

I'm 36 and my youngest child is 8, oldest is 18. Both boys. I remember my eldest and his cousins tween years being pretty similar to mine. Well, minus some of the wilder stuff I got into as a 90s latchkey kid. My 8 year old and nephews are also into the same stuff more or less as his older brother was into (video games, Legos, Pokémon cards, anime, etc.) I wonder if this is a more tween girl oriented issue.

Angela and Shawn were an obvious trauma bond. Both characters come from troubled pasts and bonded. But, I just don’t understand why so many comments are endorsing this type of bond? It’s not healthy. Edit: Trauma-boring relationships are in the same realm as relationships based on sexual intercourse. It’s surface-level, and in the real world, it does not last. Therefore, they were not going to end up together.

Jacobs was a racist. Girl Meets World should have made Maya biracial, a child of Shawn and Angela, Angela having died in child birth, Shawn distraught and becomes an absent father, which explains why the Matthews care so much and would give Shawn an arc.
