BRITISH RAILWAYS IN THE 1990's
Final Visit to Tinsley Railway Yard (Sheffield) on 30th June 1992
Continuing with my archive of video recording between the years of 1986 to 2001 this clip is of Tinsley railway Yard taken on 30/06/1992. My final visit to this dying yard rich in history, one of the biggest yards in the UK in it's heyday. The decline in traffic is very noticeable around this period and so sad to say farewell to this favourite location. Many a happy hour has been spent here by so many so I hope the video takes you back to this period with fond memories. Please feel free to comment, good or bad, all comments are read and greatly appreciated, but it is not always possible to answer each individually. Sit back and enjoy this latest production remembering all those now long gone Locomotive classes and other types of traction. Many thanks for all subscriptions and all of those viewers who have kindly shown an interest in my material.

Another great video, my only visit to Tinsley was in the summer of 1976 when it was still in full use, well sort of. The loss of the 1500vDC trains in 1981 did it no favours and with the moving of freight to the road and the ever decreasing heavy industry the writing was on the wall. All the best...Steve!

one of my first jobs on leaving school was taking a lot of the lines up out of tinsley yard working for a sheffield scrap firm ..it was graft i can tell you.. we used to cut the line into 5ft lengths with burning torches and manually pick it up and load skip after skip hundreds of tons as well as all the sleepers cast chairs chocks and screws ..no wonder i had to have extensive spinal surgery in my early thirties ..

I used to go to Tinsley depot a lot in the mid 1980s, this is as close as anyone has come to reliving this for me. I do watch a lot of your videos but dont always comment (as that might seem creepy lol) Thanks for posting these videos and may I take the opportunity to wish you and yours a merry Christmas and a happy new year. All the best, John.

In September 91 the last four Peaks departed the south yard for Glasgow and by the date of the 1996 final open day activity, or what was left was focused on a dead end set of sidings full of redundant wagons with the rest all ripped up. By the 2000s all that was left was steel trips up the bank and back again.

I visited a couple of times in the early 80's. Not straightforward to get to by public transport being a 45 minute bus journey from Sheffield station but it was like a pseudo-religious experience for a young lad from the South Coast. The first time was in a strictly legit capacity, just viewing the shunting and the comings and goings from the bridge there but the second time, more bold, sneaking into the shed and jotting down all the locos that were in there. Nobody seemed to bat an eyelid as was the case with many of the depots at that time. I'm sure if such a thing was to occur these days they'd be all over you due to health and safety concerns. Anyway, happy days.

Woo you must've seen stacks of locos including 40s 45s 20s 47s. Check out pix of Tinsley shed at that time, all manner of engines ticking over.

Cricklewood, willesden, old oak. Stratford, ripple lane... These legendary sheds... On a soaking wet Saturday. Easy pickings, and very accommodating staff to well-behaved polite spotters... but try it on a weekday - not a chance 😂

Me & My Dad used to go to Tinsley a lot when i was younger. Always remember that big tyre at the bottom.. Where the hole in the fence was? I always got my jeans or trousers mucky on the mud or the water inside that tyre evertime!! Annoying!! Ha..😂 Also driving past the yard on the motorway seeing those sad rows of Peaks withdrawn and waiting to be scrapped. Just really upsetting..

45115 was first, 45007 was last between 1990 and 1991. There are videos posted of visits with close ups on what appears a very desolate bottom yard. All gone now.
