I never buy bow strings! Never! I make my own " very cheap" with braided fishing line. (About $5 a string.) They are strong, never had one break even after thousands of shots whereas the fast flight strings that came with my bows started looking worn after only a few months. I try to shoot about 100 arrows a day, sometimes up to 200 a day ... on average that's about 5,000 shots a month.
I use 90lb or 100lb test for my continuous loop string body of 12-14 strands. (That's 1,200 - 1,400lb strength for my 45lb Recurve Bow which only requires 180 - 225lbs of string strength.) I also just started to tie in a couple extra strands for reinforcement at both end loops. I also use 50lb test for my windings.
And just to be on the safe side, I will discard a string after 6 months no matter how good it looks for as cheap as I can make them.
I'm also not telling anyone that they should do this, I'm just saying this is what I do.
