Braided fishing Line Is The Best Bow String Material

I never buy bow strings! Never! I make my own " very cheap" with braided fishing line. (About $5 a string.) They are strong, never had one break even after thousands of shots whereas the fast flight strings that came with my bows started looking worn after only a few months. I try to shoot about 100 arrows a day, sometimes up to 200 a day ... on average that's about 5,000 shots a month.
I use 90lb or 100lb test for my continuous loop string body of 12-14 strands. (That's 1,200 - 1,400lb strength for my 45lb Recurve Bow which only requires 180 - 225lbs of string strength.) I also just started to tie in a couple extra strands for reinforcement at both end loops. I also use 50lb test for my windings.
And just to be on the safe side, I will discard a string after 6 months no matter how good it looks for as cheap as I can make them.
I'm also not telling anyone that they should do this, I'm just saying this is what I do.

It sort of resembles a Flemish twist string. No rule against doing what you’re doing and I’m of the school, if it works use it. Cool idea regarding the serving line.👍. Most bows come with a crappy Dacron string so if they can use what I consider crap string and yours seem to work great then maybe you’re starting something new. Spot on.👍😎🏹🇨🇦

For most people it’s worth just spending $30-45 for a well made string that will last over 10 years Vs making a jig, experimenting with lengths, how many strands, etc. then not fully trusting it That said, i just started making my first string lol. For fun and the feeling you’re shooting with something you made

I buy my spools of BCY B55 off ebay, just checked, they run about $15. They come in a large variety of colors. I have bought three spools total, have made about six or seven strings and maybe used up about 10% on average of each spool. They are well worth it and you already know how to make strings which is huge! Seems like not many archers can make strings and if they do not many can make them well which is why they are so pricey.

@@HandyL yea, I think braided fishing line is catching on big time in archery ... I forget his name, but one guy who has a an archery Youtub channel named Kramer Ammons just very recently compared different materials to build bow strings, and he said Braided fishing won hands down as the best string material ... As you know, that's all I use. I get it really dirt cheap off of Wish, and it's all I use .. I'm not the best string maker, but they have turned out great and I love using it & making my own strings. Hi brother i am from South Africa i also made a 16 strand endless loop string for my Take down longbow home made bow and my strings are older than 8 years i used dyneema braided fishing line. The braided line got 8 strands very strong. i cant remember what strength it is and poundage. Can you maybe tell me how thick is fast flight and Dacron bow strings? The string company's like to talk bs and saying fishing line wont work they are lying they only want to make money.

You are right, they are liars ... D97 is actually made out of Dyneema! I love the fact that people who tell me braided fishing line won't work, are unknowingly using it themselves! 😆😝🤪 I typically use 90 or 100lb test and have made my strings as low as 10 strands and years later they look and shoot fine but most of the strings I make are 12 strands! God bless ya!

Making bowstrings is probably worth it if you are enjoying the activity and you have the time. Here's the question: Would you spend your time making bowstrings and selling them for $50? No? That's why they cost $50.

what is the strech on this string ? i will make a string for my PSE stinger X 50 pound , and use 10 strands as you use
@joedaniels4646
@joedaniels4646 2 жыл бұрын
There is almost ZERO stretch with braided fishing line ... With 90 or 100 lb test you have 450 - 500lbs of strength around the string grooves & 900 - 1,000 lbs with ten strands for overall tensile strength. The only thing that stretches is my knot where I tie the ends together. It has to settle for a day or two, just need to put a couple more twists in it ... Good luck and let me know how you make out with it.

No, all fishing line except Braided Fishing Line will stretch too much and is more prone to eventually snapping.

I have shot my strings over several months every single day, and non of strings have broke while I have strings that came with my bows that after only 2 months although they didn't break, they started looking like crap to where I threw them away. You might want to see Kramer Ammons test where he compared Braided fishing line strings and it beat two of the more popular strings out there, one of which I believe is the string material you mentioned. Oh and I get my sting from Wish dirt cheap ... I can make a string for under $5 with 90-100 lbs test using only 12-14 strands which makes it fire the arrows fast as hell. But hey brother, I'm only sharing what I like for those who might want to try it ... I certainly don't think my way is what everyone needs to do. I very much respect your opinion, and hey you may be right. Maybe I'll try a spool of that material you suggested, but I honestly probably won't ever buy a string. Anyway God bless you and your family and thanks for watching and providing your feedback I do appreciate it!

Just a little update ... I have been doing archery for a little over 2 years now. I make all my own strings and even several mollegabet bows, and a Penobscot bow. To date I have not had one string I have made from braided fishing line at 90 to 100lbs test ever break or look like I need to discard one yet. Except when it's really bad weather out or my shoulders are acting up, I take a minimum of 50 shots a day and as much as 300 shots a day on weekends and when I'm off for the summer months. And so far all those naysayers that have said braided fishing line will fail have been wrong! As a matter of fact I have found out that Spectra and Dyneema . D-97 is actually made from the same braided fishing line material and is three times as expensive as Braided fishing line. Funny how after I posted my video Kramer Ammons put out a video where he tested regular bow strings, paracord, and braided fishing line and Braided Fishing line was the overall winner as the best bow string material & no one told him that the string made from braided fishing line would bow up on him! LOL!!!! Again, I'm not telling you to make your strings out of braided fishing line, I'm just saying that that's what I do, and I will never buy a bow string from any manufacturer! This video as all of my videos are for fun and or educational purposes only! God bless you all!

I just watched Kramer's video. What he said was that the fishing line was surprisingly nice, slightly slower, slightly softer shooting, and roughly the same price per foot as the D-97 (the $10 spool of fishing line has less material on it than the $30 spool of D-97). He didn't say it was the overall best, he said it tied with the D-97 (which is still a good thing, just don't want it misrepresented as 'the best').
