Bravely Default is without a doubt my favourite game on the 3DS. Hopefully the new game coming out on the Switch, Bravely Default 2, will be just as amazing. But the question is, what is Bravely Default? This series will hopefully answer your questions, starting with a game review and following with a largely retrospective based story review!

EDIT: A correction! Naoki Ikushima is the character designer for Bravely Default 2, not Akihiko Yoshida. They replicated Yoshida's style so well I made a schoolboy error, so I'll be correcting that in Part 2. Thank you to everyone who reached out and told me! Bravely Defaulting where no man has gone before. (Sorry.) Thank you for your patience everyone! Very happy to finally get this one out there, and even more excited to complete Part 2. The second video will be a spoiler based retrospective, so I hope to get something a little shorter out for you all before that. If all else fails, you'll get Part 2 anyways. Hooray! Thanks as always for your support, hope you enjoy the video. :)

Linked Horizon themselves sells copies of a Blu-Ray of it on Amazon. Sadly, inflation for overseas fans exists, and it's currently at $161 American before shipping or tax, which can put it over $166. Still trying to get it. At least I have confirmation of the Luxendarc Daikikou and Luxendarc Shou Kikou/ Luxendarc Large Diary and Luxendarc Small Diary albums coming to me now, which have several of the songs in that concert, along with a few others not that remix other tracks he did for the game. Also the only way you can hear the full credits theme without also hearing "THANK YOU FOR JOINING OUR MUSICAL TRIP TO LUXENDARC!" screamed to a concert audience.

Regarding the music, Revo commented a long while back that he was mostly aiming for compositions that you could theoretically have made for like, the SNES and Mega Drive, but obviously with live instruments, to keep it in line with Bravely's concept as a whole being "Oldschool Final Fantasy, but with modern limitations." This let Revo focus on making the making the core melodies, and made him choose instruments very carefully to reflect the mood. It's honestly one of my favourite soundtracks as a result. It works so, so well, and as much as I also loved Second's soundtrack, it misses out on that, with a lot of its tracks feeling very samey. Like, I'll remember whose character theme is whose in Default for decades to come, but I doubt I could reliably tell you the same for Second even now. With all that said, really looking forward to the second video, Clemps. This is still my favourite JRPG story of all time in spite of its problems so I would love to hear your thoughts.

@@torikkusuta5926 On that point, the game states the true meaning on what it is to "Bravely Default." It is to have the courage to act (to get the false ending), why having the wisdom to defend, or as you put it and how multiple characters put it, "Have the courage to disobey" essentially is the meaning to Brave, to be Edea and rebel, but not be so brash as to do so early. No, you must be wise in how you brave. Anticipate your foe, and strike them down when their intentions are against you. The entire game's plot in one fell swoop.

Yeah, it is really gross how they crawled over all games in the 3DS days. It started with Fire Emblem Awakening in 2012 selling easy repeatable DLC which gave EXP or Gold, which was mirrored by a ton of Atlus games. Bravely Default was the peak in any 3DS game I played. No other game sold turns mid-battle with uncapped damage and enemies not fighting back with the heroes I'm supposed to like being coy about how I get SP. No other game I played added this as part of a rerelease which included 100 other improvements on the exact same platform (the BD the west got was the second release, a Final Mix if you will). Only that game forces players to wait with it on (not sure if the clock can be manipulated to cheat) to speed up progression for better moves and also more free SP. I complained about these things but got shrugged off probably because the discourse was poisoned by how the game works after Chapter 4 and censorship besides how people who understand the job system will see less of a need. DMC5 had a less harmful inclusion of MTX since you need to die to see the option in game while selecting to spend a small amount of the most common currency in the game (there is a free alternative each day you boot the game that is also found in levels) and also have too little to revive yourself, but that just sets you back to a checkpoint. And people who want a good score wouldn't want to take damage in the first place. Still deserved and got some concern since it was a leap from the last game.

One of my all time favourite games, period- that ending still blows my mind whenever I think about it. The soundtrack is soooo good... I swear I got emotional just hearing those snippets of the character themes. Used to listen to the vocalized versions of them on repeat when I walked home from the bus stop every day so there's a lot of nostalgia for me there.

For me, i love this game, even though that ONE part almost made me quit, i power through and beat it. The OST is god tier to me where there isn't a single bad song at all, at worst a song in the game is good, but man when they are amazing they make me feel something, especially That person name is, all 4 character themes (Yes even Edea's theme), World of Scattering Flowers and Serpent Eating the Ground. I feel like Bravely Default never really gets talk about, so I will thank you Clemps for giving it the video(s) it deserves.

I'm so happy you're reviewing Bravely Default! It's one of my favorite games ever. One note: Akihiko Yoshida isn't actually the character designer for Bravely Default 2, they brought Naoki Ikushima in (the same artist who did the Octopath Traveler desgins), his style looks very similar to Yoshida's so it's easy to conflate them

I love this game a lot, and I have a lot of great memories of playing it... But that one part, the infamous part, that completely killed my motivation to keep playing it. It was really really bad and I had to force myself to keep playing. That, and I let myself get too attached to that fairy.

I'm really glad you mentioned Revo. One funfact that I have to post about the CE version of Bravely default is the fact that he writes a note in the mini album that comes with it. Being a fan of his for so long and it really warms my heart every time I look at the note. Especially since at the time I wasn't sure if BD would ever see a US release.

Regarding SP and bravely second, yeah it's defiently not needed. The game was actually balanced without bravely second in mind since bravely second and SP wasn't even in the game at release. You see the version of bravely default we got in the west was known in japan as "Bravely Default for the sequel" an updated release of the game in anticipation for the sequel, essentially an equivelent to kh's final mix. It was this 'for the sequel' version of the game that introduced sp and bravely second since they were planned as mechanics for the sequel.

Fun fact, as the game never explicitly told me how to use Bravely Second, I got through the BD and up to a 'you must use it' story beat in BS before ever triggering it. Pro tip, if you love yourself, don't go too heavy on magic in BD, and there is no shame looking up game-breaker combos when the penultimate battle EXISTS.

I had a lot of fun with Bravely Default at its best, but I've still never finished it despite playing on and off since 2014. The need to grind up jobs with each individual character to get skills for combinations to create parties that can actually stand up to the later bosses absolutely killed the momentum for me. I think the ability to link other people's characters is supposed to help that, but I've literally only ever encountered one other person who bothered to record a leveled up character or good attack for that, and as a result I'm stuck with a bunch of generic level one monks and white mages to choose from, meaning the mechanic might as well not exist. As a result, I've hit a point where I boot up the game, realize that basically the only thing I can do next is grind JP in order to implement my strategies for the teamed-up boss fights, then realized that the best possible way to grind JP is still horribly inefficient, then do that for about an hour before getting bored and putting the game down again. If job levels were shared across characters, I'd probably have finished the game years ago without ever having to pause for anything. It doesn't help that the last thing I remember happening in the plot is (not really spoilers imo) Edea's dad giving a big speech that I'm pretty sure was supposed to make me find him sympathetic and instead made me think he was too stupid to live.

I'm a little confused that you didn't mention the special move music(which i know is the characters themes) and how it also a game mechanic. yea for those who don't know since i can kinda guess big boy clemps is waiting to do that for the next part. well when you use a special move you get their theme plus a nice bonus as long as the music plays. a cool way to keep the bonus going is to make another character use a special move and adding their bonus too. if also remember that all the character theme play together if all 4 do it.
