Serpent Eating the Ground might just be the single best track in a JRPG I've ever heard, not because it's an incredible final boss theme (though...it is), but because it combines so many leitmotifs you've heard throughout the game, and it absolutely sends shivers down my spine. Amazing story review, Clemps! Your best work yet!

I played through a majority of Bravely Default utilizing the 3DS's sleep mode and keeping the system charged, mostly because of the in-game bonuses for time in sleep mode. I was very fortunatel that the first time I did a full shutdown of my system was when the title screen changes. First, when I saw it I thought "that.is.awesome" followed by "oh crap if I hadn't had shut down my 3DS I would've missed this entirely"

I literally found myself listening through your whole drakengard and nier series again because I missed your voice.

I really like how the party explicitly kills any Asterisk holder that attempts to stop them. It adds a lot of weight that you're actually out here murdering the Duchy's upper brass and the Council of Six room slowly growing emptier during the first loop

No lie, when I first played the game I guessed that Ringabel’s twist was that he and Sage Yulyana were the same person, through some sort of time travel shenanigans

It just dawned on me, but the weird blind spots in the story's writing could be because the player is a character in the narrative. You the player know things that the characters don't, and are pushing and prodding them in the direction to saving everything, even if they don't really know why they feel compelled to do what they do.

Cool thing about the Japanese title, its "Bravely Default: Flying Fairy" which changes to "Lying Airy"

I've not played this game but I have to admit that the Airy twist is blowing my mind. Like, the number countdown on her wings, the subtitle change, the fact that the cute, comedy fairy companion is a main villain; I am loving all of it.

Even now, when the characters' special battle themes start playing in the final boss music I get chills.

I literally walked 7 miles to pick up this game in college; WORTH IT!

This is a very memorable game for a multitude of reasons, both good and bad. And I think overall that's a really good thing. A game can have really bad sections within it, and still be a great game overall. I still remember learning the twist about Airy and how much it hurt me inside. I really liked Airy and I didn't want to believe it. I hadn't ever felt that betrayed by a friend in a RPG before.

The changed title of Bravely Default gives me ideas. Thank you Clemps for spooking me the hell out, I love it.

I've saw this in my notifications, and I'm *so* happy it's finally here!! Finally happy someone else said it, I *really* didn't find having to go through the loops so bad. I mean yeah it can get pretty grating with having to fight the crystal bosses 16 times and hit X to awaken 16 different crystals that I understand why some people really aren't a fan of this (I have a friend who just *loves* to remind me of that). But even then I liked how they handled the Asterisk bosses by giving them both interesting teams and battle strategies so they don't feel stale and also giving them some more character depth in each world your visit. Not to mention the absolute hype and spectacle of the true final boss made the journey *more* than worth it.

That final "Unacceptable...!" I felt that in my chest.

Honestly, the repetitive thing was kinda tiring, however the thought of beating Victoria's and Victor's ass over and over again, and watching her die tragically so many times was kind of charming

My take on Braev Lee - I definitely agree that a lot of his actions don't make a lick of sense in the grand scheme of things, he's not only a terrible father but also a pretty bad ruler. The only possible reason I can think of is that he's just plain prideful. He refused to tell Edea the truth because he wanted to shelter her as much as possible after she got herself wrapped up with the literal harbinger of the apocalypse. He wanted a daughter who would just sit and do as told... which... is not Edea. At all. It's not an excuse to justify his actions, f*cking no way in hell does being an arrogant dickhead justify not being upfront and honest with his own daughter, but it is at least the best explanation I can think of and might also help explain why a lot of Eternian Factions have next to no, or just flat out no respect for the guy. That lack of respect he gives to his own family might be a reflection of how he treats his own subordinates.

simply swapping the crystal prayer event to a hold button would be enough for me

I think Serpent Eating the Horizon may be my favorite final boss theme. The live version is amazing to watch.

I love this game, I love this video. But I chose the "false ending" because though I didn't kill a god, I broke the cycle. I felt good about that.

This game came out when I was in high school, the only person there who beat this game, I don't meet in person many who did see it though to the end. But I was blown away during the last 2 boss battles. They were just so captivating especially the last one. The funny thing was I was playing it when I shouldn't have when I was in a class study hall freaking out silently in then back to myself. God damnit Square port this to the switch you cowards!

You know, I never used a wiki or anything, because I was still a wee child when I got this. I kept on going and going because I truly thought something would change, or rather I anticipated a twist after an uncertain amount of repetitions. So that's why I kept going. I only tried to get the false ending after I beat the game. Experiencing the twist without knowing how many times must this cycle repeat really elevated the emotions I had once the twist was revealed.

I'm surprised how you glossed over Dim's Journal, when there's even a very spicy entry about how the party from an alternate universe met its end by falling into a river of lava and slowly roasting to death while screaming

*Spoilers* I like to think the devs watched endless eight and said "wow, 8 repeats was too long. I'm sure if we only do 4 then people will be happy."

This game is weirdly emotionally reasonant for me. It just feels... right to me.

I love BD, for introducing the encounter meter, something I still believe should be the standard for ALL games with random encounters should. Also, caused my firm hatred and distrust for all fairies.

You have managed to put into words why this game is so wonderful, and why it will always have a place ir our hearts despite the things it doesn't do very well. From the bottom of my heart, thank you! And for all of you who haven't played or finished it: please, consider give the game a try! Have patience, turn down the encounter rate to 0% if you must, and see the whole story through the end. On top of the fursuit class costume, you can make the dudes wear tacky elvis halloween costumes. Also once you get the vampire asterisk, everyone can learn gastric juices and vomit on all of their enemies.

Truly LOVE the voice talent of Mona Marshall! (The voice actress for the child that Tiz befriends and is an all round great anime/video game voice actor!) Her most notable roles include (but are not limited to): Toboe from Wolf's Rain, Kite from the Dot Hack franchise, and Chagum from Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit.

This was absolutely fantastic. Once again, you prove to be one of my favorite content creators ever with your passion to tell the story. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate you letting me experience these stories and games vicariously, as I will never have time to play them. Many of them, like this and Kingdom Hearts, are games I never had any intention of playing, and that remains the same. Being the father of three, fourth on the way, I have to select my games and time carefully. But honestly, I am so glad you do what you do. Keep up the good work, my favorite rat boy! The thing that I have come to love is that Bravely Default has given way to Bravely Second, Octopath and now both BD2 and project Triangle. I didn't finish Bravely defaults story for the obvious reason but I still love that this return.

Anne repeating that opening line in Bravely Second genuinely made me say "What? Oh... You bitch." The twist being that it wasn't Airy in that opener, but Anne, recruiting us to stop her sister. Only to clear the way for her own plot, of course.

Gestoff T' Canines had me laughing harder than it should have.

The story of Bravely Default is such a cool idea, with the loops and everything going on, but for me the execution was just too sloppy. If there had been even a reason King "I shan't speak of this" kept his mouth shut it wouldn't have bothered me nearly as much, but as it is Default is still a really cool idea with fun gameplay.

Tiz was the only member of the team that objected to putting a small child (Egil) in harm's way. He was the only one trying to act like a decent human being. While they were exploring that lava dungeon, the child was almost killed, and the party was almost killed saving him... because there shouldn't have been a child there. I got so mad at this point, that I stopped playing the game, and never came back to it.

I kind of want an ending where ouroboros gets his wish looks around and then have an obvious disappointment on his face

I did not see the 'Celestial Realm' when I finished my play thru. That was a genuine surprise. I loved the multidimensional nonsense fot the latter portion of the story, even going out of the way to re-fight all the Job Bosses in each recycle in case they had something different to say (they didn't).

I was JUST thinking about Bravely Default content when this video shows up. You, sir, are a gift to the community. Fun aside note: one of the reasons why I was excited for the original game's release was the fact that I had heard REVO's music on Attack on Titan previously and wanted an excuse to experience even more of his work. The story and cast were wonderful. (Stellar voicework.) Heck. Bringing back the Job system was enough to seal the deal for me.

The worst part of the repeating chapters is that, if you dare to think for yourself and disobey Airy's bs ... You get the false ending. No, instead you have to play along with the characters because ... Reasons ? They don't even make any plan to prepare for the big bad or anything, they just keep following orders until the game decides "Ok, final boss time now !" out of nowhere.

I've always wanted to get into the series but just never had the time. After listening to your videos good sir, I am BEYOND hyped for BD2!!

I remember nearly hating this game when I first played through it, purely for those first couple time loops where nothing changes at all. Now, maybe this is more my problem than the game's, but I couldn't very well just let those exclamation/question marks sit on the map before continuing with the story. Not only did this mean I refused to perform the first time loop before I killed all the dragons and took on DeRosa's Castle, but that for those 2-3 loops where nothing changed at all, not even the main characters' dialog, I completed each of those fight every single time, over and over again. I can kind of understand why they didn't change at first. They were completely optional events, and most likely there for people who went through the first loop without doing everything to give them a chance to get any asterisks they missed before the plot actually began moving again. But, and this is a big but, it makes all those loops where nothing changes feel completely useless, just filler where if I remember correctly the characters even repeat dialog a couple times for the things you are required to do each loop. That said, when things did start to change it gave me an unexpected surprise(mostly because at that point the game conditioned me to not expect anything to be different), but it wasn't really until the second loop with differences did the differences start to matter. It was great seeing the astertisk holders start to team up, show a different, much less cartoonishly evil side where they had actual goals and admirable or understandable motivations, eventually leading up them forming full teams of people that make sense to be teamed up together for pretty enjoyable fights and moments(except that one fight with praline, that cheat. how dare she use that party bp up move at no cost, hated that fight so much). But I could have easily just skipped all these fights and moments assuming they would have just been the same encounters repeated over and over again like had already been happening the past couple loops, which I can't view as anything other than poor design.

I was so close to finishing it but finally I know the full story thank you for making this video it really helped watched it all in one sitting

Bravely default is my favorite 3ds game by far. The characters are so lovable and I really liked the subtle spins on a classic system. I didn’t mind the repetition because I loved the battle system and wanted to know more about the villains. I’m glad that bravely default II is shedding some light on this awesome game.

Having played the game years ago, watching this was amazing. Even with the, certain writing issues, the way the story this game unraveled was by far the best for a JRPG on the 3DS at its time.
