The Saturn controller is the greatest ever made for 2D fighters, with the best ever D-pad, ask any Retro fighting fan.

I think the analog stick just mimics the Saturn's dpad, like when using it on the Genesis. The original Saturn 3D Control Pad only supported one control input at a time, so there was a switch that selected between the analog stick and dpad. Since this controller doesn't have a switch on it and both the dpad and analog stick can be used at the same time, it's probably only using the dpad mode. The original Saturn 3D Control Pad also had analog triggers, which this does not.

There's actually over 60 games that support the 3D controller, although this includes Japanese games and alternate games such as Christmas Nights and Sega Rally Championship Plus Netlink Edition. I do think it's pretty cool though that games like Duke Nukem 3D, Panzer Dragoon, Manx TT, Sonic R, and Virtua Cop 2 all supported the controller. Interesting side note which I did not realize until just now: the Saturn 3D controller beat the N64 to market by one month in the US. It's worth noting that, according to their website, the analog stick registers as 8-way directional inputs on all games for both Genesis and Saturn. As I read that, this means that it's not actually functioning as an analog stick, but as a d-pad. That would also explain why there's no digital/analog switch like there is on the 3D controller. This is a big disappointment to me as analog support would have been a killer feature for me to buy as a secondary Saturn controller, so that I wouldn't have to switch over to the 3D controller to get analog support in those games. Oh well. Like you pointed out though, the ability to use the stick on regular Saturn games could actually be a benefit. I've always thought the original US Saturn controllers were absolutely awful. The shoulder buttons are terrible and I never really cared for the d-pad, either. The Japanese controllers always looked a lot better, but now I'm torn as to whether to get one of those or one of these. I have two US controllers and the 3D controller. I would probably end up using this with the Genesis as well, because I'm not particularly fond of the Genesis controllers either. So maybe the option to use the analog stick in games that don't support the 3D controller is actually a benefit. I have always wanted one of those Japanese-style Saturn controllers though!

Thankfully back in 2012 or 2013 I found an old Saturn at home that belonged to my elder brothers. I bought 2 Sega branded factory sealed 3D Saturn controllers for around $15 each, now their prices has dramatically increased.

Using anything but the original controller when I play on my older systems just seems wrong, including the N64. Always found that using the original controller for that said system is a big part of playing those old games on the original hardware.

Just so you know, when you play the Sonic World mode on Sonic Jam on the Saturn, the analog stick does not make Sonic go around in a smooth circle. Instead, he goes around like an octagon.

Nice, cant wait for that Dreamcast controller, all my Dreamcast thumbsticks are wearing out and its difficult to pull of moves in Jet Grind Radio with slippery thumbsticks.

The Sega Genesis DID have an analog controller called the XE-1 AP. Look it up on Sega Retro, they have a list of compatible games.

Question: Are the triggers analog? The saturn used analog triggers for the 3d pad. This was used in racing games. Also, does it work with the saturn to dreamcast adapter?

I really wanted them to come through. Backed the kickstarter for the N64 controller. Unfortunately when I finally got a hold of one, the sensitivity in the stick was so far off. I'm guessing I'm really ... "sensitive" ... to stick sensitivity, because I can notice a pretty big difference when playing Banjo-Kazooie or Mario 64 on a regular non-worn N64 controller vs the Brawler 64's sensitivity. Sadly I can't deal with it. I made a lot of posts on the comments about matching the sensitivity as closely as they could but if you run tests the sensitivity is way off in each direction. Sucks.

I still need to get a brawler controller for my n64 because I got a aqua blue n64 console and don’t have a matching controller for it. They need to make a wireless version for these controllers.

There were some more games than Nights that did use the analog mode of the 3D controller for Saturn; Daytona CCE and Burning Rangers also uses it.

Can’t use it with the genesis collection because that game won’t let you costomize button layout and the stock layout is all over the place

Does the analog stick work on the Saturn for even non-analog 3D games like Daytona USA: Circuit Champion Edition?

So... the 3D Pad on the Sega Saturn was usable with racing games and the flight stick, due to their inherent analog input. Sega was trying to make a lot of games forwards compatible when the 3D Pad came out, with varying results (Panzer Dragoon plays quite a bit differently with 3D Pad then on D-pad for example). The main question I had about the controller was if it had analog triggers, like the 3D Pad did. Did you test if it had that in games like ManX TT?

There's actually a good little bunch of Saturn games that were made to take advantage of the 3D analog controller, and in their manuals show pictures of the 3D controller. Off the top of my head, Burning Rangers for example is one of these, which is noticeably better with the analog stick. The same with Croc. Several racing games too, including MANX TT Superbike (you can't even do medium-tilt-turns without the analog stick in this one) And of course NiGHTS. And I know there's quite a few more as well

I will most probably buy the Dreamcast version of this controller. Playing fighting games on the original DC controller is a test of patience :)

Adam, just get a Tototek PS2 to Genesis or Saturn adapter. Works great and it supports the analog sticks as 2-D movement.

I really wonder how possible is to better MK2 Saturn Controller. Best d-pad ever, 6 front buttons and microswitch shoulder buttons: it's absolute perfection for 2D gameplay/arcade games. Maybe that analog stick can replicate the steering wheel in games like Sega Rally?

I like their brawler 64 controller. If they make a bluetooth option for it, i'll definitely buy it over the hyperkin hori looking one.

Let me preface this by saying I play fighting games extensively on Sega Saturn and Sega Dreamcast, primarily of the 2d Capcom variety, which require 6-face buttons, and rapid inputs. So when I saw these BrawlerGen, I was very excited. And while the ergonomics/design of these are spectacular, I had a very poor experience with these. First one they sent had constant triggering of start button when pressing top row of 6-face buttons. So they sent me a replacement, and the replacement had the same issue, problem is.... when I contacted them again to warn them of this maybe being an issue with the internal design transferring pressure, they never responded. So I now have two BrawlerGen which are mostly unplayable on my favorite games, but play well on games which don’t need such rapid input. Fair warning.

Some of the Saturn games use the Analog option and the D pad would be used for other options.. My worry is that the analog on this, is not a true analog like the Saturn controller. Also if it is a true analog, some games would lock up in analog mode that is why they had the switch to turn it off.If you have Hexen it will not work in analog mode, and if you have Duke Nukem, in analog mode you can use the Dpad to switch through the items and move with the analog. Have you tested any of those games?

You have been playing Saturn the wrong way for awhile now then, lol. Better late then never! The 3D analog control benefits so many games! I think the intention was for more than NiGHTS, that game is just the most well known. Just from looking at the design, I wish they had the d pad and joystick swapped. I like the original position of them. From the styling, I’m betting it’s because most will buy this pad for Genesis, and that would be the preferred hand placement.

Shame they didn't release anymore of those NES pads, been itching to get a decent replacement for the original. Way too uncomfortable for extending gaming.

I feel like I'm in the minority, but I'd love an USB 3 button Genesis controller like what comes with the Genesis mini to be available for purchase separately. I just love that controller despite it's lack of buttons.

Hello, I've heard that the thumbstick doesn't actually work as a Saturn 3D pad replacement as the control stick only emulates a D-pad, ie only functions in 8 directions. Can you confirm this? If true, Then that's got to be the biggest missed opportunity for this controller imo. It could have been an outright replacement for the 3D pad AND the standard Saturn pad, but if it genuinely doesn't work in all 360 degrees, then the controller is kind of totally pointless to me. Sure, 3D Saturn games that didn't have 3D Saturn pad support would benefit from this, but what's the point if it doesn't actually work as a 3D Saturn pad too?

Lots of Saturn games use analogue... Most racing games for example. I bought the N64 version, bacause I don't like the original. I am not looking for a new controller for Saturn or Mega Drive, as these are great already.

Oh wow, the one I'm looking forward towards most is that Dreamcast one, I HATE the Dreamcast controller, specifically the slippery thumbstick and back bulge that gets in the way of the grips for anyone with big hands.

I actually really love the Saturn controllers (with the exception of the western Model 1 controller) so I have no need for something like this. In fact I think the original Japanese / Western Model 2 controller is the probably the best 2D focused controller ever made, and the 3D controller is probably the best thumbstick controller of the 5th generation.

Maybe they should make controllers for Atari 5200, 7800, and ColecoVision.

Side note: If the NES Brawler had two controller ports like the NES Advantage, it could probably solve the “two controllers for one player” thing that Smash TV had. Buuut admittedly that’s a fringe as hell case, since there are much better ways to play the game.

It took me fracturing my left thumb (dominant hand) to “learn” / adjust to N64. By placing my thumb in cast on the stick & move my whole arm. Now I’m ok with it but.. not my favorite.

I want all the REAL console ones. Like you I have the OEM systems. I don’t need the USB ones. I already have a Steam controller & XBOX 360 wired on my PC.
