Great video Mike. Just watched interview with Stephanie Kelton stating debt is savings! Yes this is what MMT is pushing now. This would be comical if it wasn’t so tragic. Also note that banks created the money, sent it to Universities spent into the economy. Now that asset on the banks book becomes a liability and paid by US government or more clearly US taxpayers. 🤢

You just described pretty much how all the US money is created. The US Dollar - our currency - Fiat money is a type of currency that is not backed by a physical commodity, such as gold or silver. Instead, it is declared by a government to be legal tender and is authorized by government regulation. Its value is derived from the relationship between supply and demand and the stability of the issuing government. Most modern paper currencies, including the U.S. dollar and the euro, are examples of fiat money. US Dollar is printed by the Federal Reserve.

Those loans should have never existed in the first place. The U.S. has allowed a highly predatory student loan program for decades now. Those loans are clearly designed to trap people not help people. Had we just paid for the education with a collective fund in the first place.... we wouldn't be paying nearly the amount we are now. But this is mainly a symptom of late stage capitalism. All of it. The run away monopolization. The death of the dollar. Predatory loans. Commodification of literally everything. It's all a system of the collapse of the system, which you also agree is coming.

In general Mike is correct, at first thought I see some 30 tear living in his mom's basement paying video games and just got his debt forgiven - that should not happen period. - we also need to consider who got relief, nearly 44,000 of them are teachers & firefighters who earned forgiveness after 10 yrs public service and have been in repayment for at least 20 years. If anyone is going to get help those two professions have my vote.

To restore fairness need a special tax on the educational institutions that ultimately received all of that money or the financial institutions that chose to lend out the money. Oh, and whatever happened to the requirement to nationalize student loans becuase it paid for Obamacare?

Student loans can be extraordinarily burdensome. In 2005, I borrowed $30,000, and despite never missing a monthly payment, by the time I will completed the repayments, the total amount paid will have amounted to $125,000. Notably, these loans are not dischargeable through bankruptcy. This situation is strikingly different from that of home, car, or credit card loans, where such terms would be widely considered unacceptable by all of you. At the time of taking the loan, I was young and lacked sufficient information about how interest on student loans worked. It's easy to overlook the severity of this issue and how life crippling can be when you haven't experienced it personally.

Maybe we should look at who is getting the shaft when an education cost an average of $ 150,000. I went to a state college at a cost of $300 per semester, from 1978-81. My textbooks cost me between $125-$150 per semester, and my rent was $ 300 per month. My food cost me about $ 125 a month.

There is no “free”. Somebody has to pay for it. Teachers don’t work for free, universities have costs to run and maintain themselves. We should bring back apprenticeships. Learn a skill at little or no cost then transition into a paying career
