But then again I can’t speak for the whole of BC so everyone may have different opinions :) all I know is that Quebec is definitely a special addition to canada.

I’m not sure why anyone would expect the United States to support Quebec independence. A North American continent with as few political divisions as possible is integral to American national security. Imagine if Quebec somehow became another Cuba - a stepping stone for an overseas power to attack America. I love Quebec’s culture though, I hope it sticks around - just within Canada.

France and Russia will make sure that USA, respect us. If you can find the interview of Jacques Chirac, president of France at Larry king in 60 minutes, you'll learn something about it. Anyway, Canada hates us and we don't care if Canada will cease to exist because of us. It's your constitution that makes it possible. And yes, if Ontario secede too, Canada will cease to exist. This is the only 2 provinces that can't quit Canada without destroying it forever. But you don't care anyway... So be prepared for another round of constitutional crisis, because we are ready for anther clash with you.

Its a damn good thing they stayed in Canada--if they had separated in 1995 by 2020 I have no doubt Quebec would be "Haiti North"--the US made it very clear to Quebec that there would be no free trade agreement/the backlash from the rest of Canada in dealing with Quebec would have been horrendous--and without the transfer payments that came from rest of Canada--Quebec's economy would have sunk like a loadstone---not to mention the fact the debt owed to Canada would have saddled them for years to come--and don't forget the indigenous population of northern Quebec (Cree Nation etc)--wanted nothing to do with a "Quebec Country"--I wouldn't put it past them to sabotage hydroelectric plants in their territory etc

Ironically Lucien Bouchard is now the sovereignists worst enemy--he has stated that separation was a nice "dream" but that's all it will ever be a dream--its time for Quebecers to work harder and improve their standard of living within the frame work of Canada-not chase some idea that will never come to fruition--and as the old guard of separatists die off (Landry, Parizeau etc)-those words are all the more prophetic

What is really sad is not necessarily the outcome of the referendum in my opinion. It's the realization that we used to have actual statesmen, on both sides, who had actual convictions and a vision. We are left with absolutely nothing more than inane and empty politicians who do not see or care about anything more than the results of the next polls. There are no statesmen left in canada (or in quebec) and it's future is going to be bleaker than it ought to be.

If it's good for us, it's also good for them to get out of the disgusting Indian Act and be able to have their own societies and institutions according to their own culture and values, not what the federal decides for them. By the way Québec has 10 indigenous peoples but they are spread across 55 reserves.

James Rowland The threat is when an economical capital of a French province switch more & more to English. As Francophone I see it everyday when I am served in English even in some Pharmaprix, clothes store, Tim Hortons etc. 10 years ago I would not have experienced something like that. Idm the English language & I speak 5 languages. But with my love in my heart for my French culture, I am deeply sad when I see French dying here. Because it will die when Montreal will be more Anglophone than Francophone. That province can’t survive in French with the economical capital being English. & I never understood why is it so much of a big deal for most Anglophones to understand that. It’s basic respect. As long as this is not understood by all, separatism will exist.

@@bigfatburn6229 I mentioned this elsewhere, but it bears repeating. First, I am an American, mostly of Irish descent, but one of my grandmothers was 1st generation American whose parents were both French Canadian. I am using that term, because that was the term she used. She grew up in Maine, USA, and was bilingual. Unfortunately, that didn’t get passed on to the next generation, so I am unable to speak French, and in the US, we do an atrocious job in teaching foreign languages. Her family, by the way, traces its lineage in Quebec back to the 17th Century. Having said that, I understand and sympathize with the plight you share. I not only cannot speak French, but I also cannot speak any Irish, and there is an effort to revive that language in Ireland. But in a sense, Quebec’s problem is as much geographic as it is linguistic. And that is Quebec’s location. It’s a French speaking island in a sea of English. That is the case whether Quebec gains sovereignty or remains a part of Canada. It’s surrounded by Anglophones, and you will find far fewer Americans who speak French than Anglophone Canadians (especially in politics). I saw the recent elections coverage, and was amazed to see so many candidates switching frequently back and forth from French to English. I doubt you will EVER see a US president do that. You might see it happen with Spanish, as that is rapidly becoming a second language here (even in New England, where I live). English has essentially supplanted French as the dominant language globally, thanks to the British Empire, and to American show business (television and movies). It’s not like one single person set out to do this; history just sometimes works out that way.

I have watched that for 23 minutes, and still didn't understand what the fundamental problem is that requires (or not) a divorce. All wars and conflicts on this planet rotate around money and power. Is this a financial dispute ? Culturally, it is not a big deal to learn two languages, especially when you are young. Both cultures - British and French - have contributed a lot to the humanity as a whole. Both have outstanding literature, music, technological achievements. Both cultures are Christian in their background. Why all that conflict, instead of cooperation ? Economically, a "divorce" is always a disaster; just look at the former USSR, which, after the collapse, made lives of its former citizens an absolute misery for a decade. Separation is necessary in cases when two cultures are absolutely incompatible, like it was, for example, between what are now India and Pakistan. If the question is: war and genocide, or separation - obviously, separation would prevent a war. But in this case it looks like anything but a war. So what's the fundamental problem ? Just ask the youth to learn two languages at school. Knowledge of two languages makes chances for future employment and success in life much stronger and better anyway. Just my two cents, of course.

@aquarius580 - by that comment - you must be Pakistani!! If Pakistan was to be created based on a culture that was not 'incompatible' then how did they lose East Pakistan - Bangladesh? In addition - the culture of Pakistan is MOST similar to India than any other nation in the world! Hence per your comment - Pakistan should never have been created and continued to be a part of India! But to answer your question - they wanted to divorce as they are as you can pretty much align Jinnah with Jacques Parizeau or Rene Leveque - they told the Quebecers - your proud French and not like the rest of English Canada. Jinnah said the same thing - you're Muslims and need your own homeland!
@aquarius580
@aquarius580 7 жыл бұрын
Athar Afzal Pakistan and Bangladesh became separate countries just because of that: they are geographically separated. Now, Pakistanis are primarily Muslims, Indians mostly preach Hinduism. Those are two very different religions. On the contrary, people of British and French origin are Christians, which means that culturally and historically they have very much in common. P.S. No, I am not a Pakistani.
@AtharAfzal
@AtharAfzal 7 жыл бұрын
@aquarius580 Pardon the comment then on being Pakistani. So there are a few things you need to consider: 1. There are approx more Muslims or approx the same number of Muslims in India (representing somewhere in 10 - 20% range) as there are in all of Pakistan - so it seems that people of different religions can live & thrive in the same nation. 2. On the flipside -Pakistan has quite a few Non-Muslims that live within its boundaries - including Christians, Zorastrians, Hindus, Sikhs, etc. 3. There are many countries that thrive while being geographically separated -> Malaysia, Indonesia, Azerbaijan, Denmark/Greenland, United States, Trinidad & Tobago, etc. - so geographical separation of East Pakistan and West Pakistan was not distance - it was actually the ill-representation of East Pakistan within West Pakistan. Whereas the standard of living kept exceeding in West Pakistan - it hadn't kept up in East Pakistan. Equality was in question that led to separation - again this is quite debatable. 4. Countries / geographical boundaries are not divided by religion or languages - if that were the case - all the Arab countries would pretty much be one, along with Europe & South America. 5. All the French in Canada in those days wanted - was their own distinct homeland that represented their French values and identity - if religion were to have united them - then the UK / France, Haiti/Dominical Republic - would've all been one country!

@@jimstrope701 Very true my friend. We had many Native American allies and treated them as separate nations with their own rights. We did fight some of them, but it was either in defense or to help our ally tribes against their enemies. Of course, the French really wanted to spread Catholicism to the Natives and trade with them first and foremost, so there was no reason to attack them for either of those goals. People who generally frame Quebecois as "the racists of Canada" say so because we don't adhere to Canada's multicultural ideology, which is to say that it is society that must adapt itself to immigrants and not immigrants that have to integrate to the society. In Canada there is no dominant culture that immigrants should integrate to as of the Official Multiculturalism Act of 1988, while in Quebec we wish to preserve ours as we have for centuries.
