This was such an overwhelming reminder for me that it's only I who has to stand up for herself.

There is a Korean drama named Flower of Evil and it's few episodes are relatable with the fact that males also become victims of physical assault and sometimes it's the brave woman who saves her husband. I really liked that drama, in my opinion the female lead was like Savitri who brings her husband back from death.

Loving this recasting series. I feel the shift is found mostly in the films after 2010 rather than in the films of 2000 onwards.

The threat from strangers at night is not limited to the threat of sexual assault. So why do we presume that men, who are also at threat, can protect women from danger?

This is why NH10 has been one of my favourite bollywood films.

Seeing the title I went like "No damsel in my distress you can't tame me~"

In the 80s and 90s, Bollywood heroines and heroes' mother were significantly used as pawns by villains to bring heroes to their feet. For the past few years, we've been seeing a slight transition in the female characters in that respect. We've many female characters who'd face the challenges, thus proving that they don't need a knight in shining armor to stand guard.

Not just this, I realised that bollywood, most of the time, villifies strong independent ambitious women. I recently saw a movie 'Aaina'. In the movie though Amrita's character does few things that justifies her being Vamp, but if she had supporting lover who understands her ambitions and passion towards acting career she would have been heroine. Lots of films are like that, you can make a video on this too.

My father once saw a baseball bat in my car and asked what is it for. I told him to defend myself if I am ever I am under attack as I am on road a lot. He was in complete shock to hear that and said to me to call him instead of I face anything or I will create a problem for myself if I try to beat up anyone. I made him a cup of tea and started telling him stories of times I used the bat.He could never give me such advice again.

i think it's not right to say that sita n Draupadi were vulnerable Sita as a young princess use to go for shikaar( hunting) she lifted the shiv dhanush during a game also, she also use to give advises to ram in administrative matters and when she was in lanka she warned ravana of severe consequences even if he touches her Draupadi was most strongest women of Mahabharata she planned the murder of Keechak who once assaulted her , she purified her hair by blood of dusanana so it's not right to say they were vulnerable all the time

There are also instances in the epics(Mahabharath and Ramayan) where women are shown as strong willed and are glorified. The amount of cherry picking The Swaddle team does baffles me. Even Ram with the whole Vanar Sena had difficulty in defeating Raavan. The most sane choice Sita had was to wait for her husband to help her. She is smart enough to know that she isn't in Ayodhya and Raavan wouldn't simply leave her if she tries to escape. And The Swaddle portraying this as if Sita was waiting to glorify Ram is dumb as hell. And the Draupadi's disrobing in a royal courtroom shows that she vows to take revenge for the insult done to her and even curses her husbands for what they did. Now that's standing up for oneself and showing authority over one's body. And there are so many occasions in the epics where they are seen as equally important and headstrong. What part of this shows you that they were damsel in distress. They are by far the most self sufficient women in these epics.

Great video! However my personal takeaway from the Mahabharata was that even though Draupadi had 5 husbands, not one of them could protect her in her greatest time of need. However once she surrendered unto Krsna he sheltered her from being disgraced in front of her own male relatives, who also did nothing to intervene on her behalf. I believe that a women can find the strength within to protect herself and the people she loves, but I personally believe that strength comes from a divine source.

While I agree with almost all of the points you put forward but I strongly disagree with you calling Draupadi,a damsel in distress.Lord krishna was not protecting draupadi's honour,he was just paying off the debt which Draupadi has on him.Also don't forget it was Draupadi who fired the flames of Mahabharata because her honour was breached.She was depicted as a warrior capable of using weapons at her disposal aka her connections.

Although Swaddle I love your content, if u read Mahabharata deeply you will realise the relation between Draupadi and Lord Krishna was way more divine than anyone could easily understand .

I'm rewatching this video after having watched NH 10 for a second time. Another thing that struck me was the way they showcased how men use the words like b1tch or wh0re or "randi" as it is depicted in the movie to make a woman feel dirty and inferior. Anushka's character first sees the word on the door of the women's toilet that she tries to erase. She later sees it again written in her husband's blood when she finds his dead body. Men don't care if the woman they are calling a "randi" is actually promiscuous. The word is used by them to make a woman feel small, inferior and dirty, like she's a worm in the ground. You'll see men in swaddle's comment section or on Instagram and twitter repeatedly use this word as soon as they lose an argument with a woman or if a woman does anything that challenges their world view. It's sort of like indian men's version of the n word for women. It's supposed to remind women that their honor in this patriarchal society is fleeting and that no matter what they do or achieve in life, they'd be a woman who is susceptible to being called a b1tch or a wh0re by anyone who pleases.

I'm so happy that this performance is finally being talked.

Sita had full faith on her husband and trusted him tht he will save her and he did exactly tht n I don't think there is anything problematic in tht.....to be tht is her personal choice.... Whereas Draupadi, is a completely different character, strong and independent as depicted by SAGE VYAS....she was not a Damsel in Distress...

Great series. Love it. Episode suggestion: Ajay Sharma from Baazigar (played by SRK). He would've traditionally been depicted as the agressive villian, going to great extents and even murdering multiple people, to avenge his father. However, unexpectedly, in the second half, his human side was shown - how his childhood impacted the course of his later life, and why he became the villian he did.

You could be a damsel and you could be in distress but coming out of that distress either by yourself or with the help of others is gonna have to be a matter of judgement and pragmatism. Not this idealistic, performative nonsense they used to show in the movies. Another terrific video.

You will know how the female characters were written with a strong feminist perspective. Draupadi, for instance, is such a woman character who set with her husbands during the battle of mahabharat and exchanged her opinion regarding the plans of battlefield. It's not always men who make 'damsels' fall in distress. Women often also don't want to change that. I remember when I was 11, my father kind of had an injury that prohibited him from walking or even sitting properly. It was the time of Kali puja and me and my mother went to a very close pandal to celebrate and worship( I went with her because I was excited), and we would be returning at about 1 am in the night. So naturally my mother was scared, and asked father who probably wouldn't be able to defend himself to come along with us incase something happened. I was furious at this, and went on to tell her that just because I was a girl I couldn't fight back (I learnt and still learn martial arts). Obviously they didn't take me seriously but father ended up not going because they did see a point in him not being able to fight back. Another guy my mother trusted accompanied us back home. It's not just about the danger at this point, my pride is on the line to be able to take care of myself. You need to be able to be confident in your abilities and then only will we conquer our fear and dependency on men. Don't be afraid to fight back and learn some martial arts, people (not just women) and learn the weak points of a human beings body. And last but not least, don't hesitate to run if you have to

Two or more things can be true at the same time.... here they are....

the worst part about all of this being originated from the epics is that they've interpreted it all wrong. Anyone who's read even "the palace of illusions" or "the forest of enchantments" knows that women in epics are definitely not damsels in distress. and those books are some percentage fiction too. Imagine the real epics. Draupadi was "saved" by Krishna, yes. But she's the one who gave the whole sabha the curse which was the birth of the great war at Kurukshetra, she's one of the primary reasons for the war. + that scene shows us how those men are egoistic when consumed by power and how even a full-court couldn't speak up against that heinous scene + Krishna "saving" Draupadi is not just "a knight saving his princess", it's a friend or a brother helping her out

there is also so many other religions and language films rather than hindi and hindus.....while mentioning India show those religious films and language films or shows and others religions too..... otherwise it is contributing partially towards himdu phobia....not perfectly women empowerment 🙏

I like it how you trace it to epics but you don't talk about characters like chitrangda and kaikeyi who were warriors. Also, you don't about the whole concept of Durga and Kali who were created because the devas could not alone defeat the demons. this idea of damsel in distress is not only limited to 'protection' of some kind, but has become a normalcy in daily life. Like, its the man's job to hold the luggage, or open gates, or even drive when together, etc. I am not saying helping, is a threat to freedom of women, simply the idea that we cant do these simple things are suggestive of a much deeper belief of inequality. this even creates dissent in minds of men who eventually feel women to have become a burden, thus increasing the gap in understanding both the genders.

70's and 80's were a clicheèd masala Era for almost all the film industries in India, but there was someone called director, K. BALACHANDER (Dada saheb Parker awardee) of Tamil Film industry and first feminist director in TN.... all his films will have an unconventional feminist female lead without any man/hero supporting her.. 1. She was a single woman who is a primary bread winner of the family. 2. She was a prostitute who was pushed to prostitution for her family well being. 3.She was a divorcee who walked out of an abusive marraige. 4. She was a ambitious women who doesn't need man by her side. 5. She was never a damsel. 6. She was a rape victim who got pregnant, doesn't end up marrying the rapist but to another good man. 7. She was the first one to stood against her own mother in-law. These movies came out in the late 70's and 80's where all film industries including tamil movies showcased women as object and damsel. No his women centric movies.. doesn't show our heroine playing a sexy cop or action heroine with glamorous outfits and item numbers.. they were regular women we meet in life with goals that goes beyond love/marriage or child birth.
