Amnesia, something that when executed correctly can result in a very immersive & in-depth story. However, it usually ends up existing just for the sake of forced exposition and an excuse for plotholes. Whether Breath of the Wild pulls this cliche off or not is up for debate.
Today I will look at how the game depicts it and whether we can compare it to real life scenarios to hopefully find out a few more secrets the protagonist is hiding.....

While I agree with everything about retrograde amnesia, anterograde amnesia is way too inconvinient for the plot and it doesn't add up. Supposedly, Link is on a journey to recover his previous memories, without the ability to create new memories, the whole quest ends up as a pointless effort. For a great example of how anterograde amnesia works, the movie Memento is excellent

A great video, and I completely agree with the part about retrograde amnesia! However, I don't believe Link has anterograde amneise, for the simple fact that once the game begins, YOU, the player, are responsible for all memories created during the course of the game. The game doesn't rely on Link's memory for anything, it relies on your memory, as well as your decision making, skills, and reactions. More or less, The Legend of Zelda has always been about your adventure, just in Link's body.

Full retrograde sure, but full anterograde, probably not. You forgot something in this. How can link cook if he has anterograde amnesia? He is constantly able to come up with recipes that are not stored in the slate. If he really had anterograde amnesia, cooking would be nearly impossible, and cooking detailed dishes would be impossible. He can cook pretty much any dish with no issue at all. Just adding to that, There is also partial amnesia, both retrograde and anterograde. Another feature overlooked is cellular memory, and how that can jump-start memories and even provide skills and memories to people who had organ donations. Link likely has partial anterograde amnesia, but not of the permanent variety. The king was not training him, simply causing him to use his mind. That brings me to the next step. Recovery from partial anterograde amnesia is possible, though time consuming. Solving puzzles with multiple solutions possible and problem solving are ways to treat partial anterograde amnesia. The more link does it, the better the state of his memory, and the faster his recovery.

Another thing to note is that amnesia as a result of loss of oxygen is not necessarily confirmed either As we don’t know the fluid solution in the shrine There is a form of heavily oxygenated solution that fills your lungs allowing you to breath with fluid He also doesn’t cough up anything or seem starved of oxygen so the solution might provide him air without filling his lungs with liquid

Good research and interesting theories. I'm a little bothered that you so casually discarded the idea that the Shrine of Resurrection could have caused the amnesia by stating that the shrine had been untested, so nobody could know its effects until it was actually used. Remember that somebody built this for a purpose. It used a technology that those clever Shieka technologists understood well enough to successfully heal an about-to-be-dead (or maybe even fully dead) Link, taking 100 year to do it. First of all, how do you know that it's untested? It was probably built 10,000 years ago, when the Shiekas were busy making everybody happy with amazing tech. If it takes 100 years to work, and it only has room for one person in it, maybe it's been used up to 99 times before. Maybe it only gets used for really important people, since whoever gets it uses up the one slot for this purpose for the next 100 years. I mean, it would be a real shame to die, be put in the shrine and then after 90 years, have someone chuck you out to die because someone more important needs it, right? They'd have to be really sure you were worth it. So, I think your idea that the Shrine of Resurrection was untested is... [wait for it...] ... untested. Maybe they knew that the side effect of this device would be loss of memory from one of those other 99 guys who had used it before. Or maybe they simply understood the tech enough to know what it does to the brain. Maybe the guy who crawled out of the tank wasn't really Link. Maybe it's a clone of Link, with Link's memories fully restored... but all the ... links (so to speak)... to those memories had evaporated. American political history has taught us about the "known unknowns", and the "unknown unknowns", but maybe his memories are "unknown knowns". This second point is that there are two different kinds of "lost memories". A memory can be lost because it is "erased" -- recorded in a specific location where the medium was damaged or reused. This is not the case for Link, since that kind of memory loss is permanent. The other kind of memory loss is a failure of memory retrieval. The memory may still be there, but the mysterious retrieval function of the brain that modern science doesn't come anywhere near understanding fails. A new pathway to the old memory needs to be built. That's where remnant threads, like a smell or a photograph, or the full sensations of visiting a place may bring about retrieval of the memory. I was in a car crash when I was 9 (54 years ago). Head on collision, police estimates each car doing about 45mph. I was the only person in either car not hospitalized for a couple months. My memories of the event are edited with surgical precision. I had been laying down in the back seat, asleep. I remember awakening in a vivid moment of extreme slow motion, pulled by extreme G forces forward, sliding across the very red, very realisticly tactile vinyl upholstery of the seat. Then poof. No memory. Then I remember laying on the seat again, looking forward. I vividly remember everything out to the edge of of the seat. Everything else is gone. I know I saw my mother and sister, with their heads tilted back on the top of the front seat, faces bleeding. People tell me that's how we were until the paramedics showed up and pulled us out of the car, but that memory is gone. I remember the passage of time and the safe visions of the seat I was laying on and all the sensations including drooling on the seat, pulled in spots by clothing, blood clotting in my hair, amid stiff hair dressing, but the Universe ended at the edge of the seat for me, until a doorway appeared, when an off-duty nurse opened the door and leaned in to assess my injuries (scratches and bruises, nothing broken or seriously cut). I remember that as they pulled me out of the car, sliding me onto the stretcher, the sunlight hit me in the face, and I turned away from it and looked at the two cars, mashed into each other. I remember myself looking at the cars, but I have no mental image of the two cars. I couldn't even recall what color the other car was. Someone told me it was white. I still don't remember it. I know I still have those memories. They are simply inaccessible to me. I'm emotionally protected from them. I'm happy to leave it that way. When I was in high school, and had to watch those stupid driving safety videos, nothing bothered me, except that when they played the crash sounds, there was a peculiar sound of bending metal that one doesn't hear in normal life, and that sound violently terrified me. I could not remain in the room. I ran for my life. It took quite a while to calm down. I can hear it now without that response, but the intensity of the original response was quite a surprise. So, the thread is still there. It's not cut. My mind simply won't allow me to follow it. So, the mechanism disrupting Link's mental process of memory retrieval could be any of many possibilities. Maybe it's emotional trauma. Maybe it's physical trauma. Maybe it's a side effect of medical treatment. I've had conversations for several hours with people in the hospital on morphine. A side effect of the drug is total loss of memories of the conversation. The best description one of them gave me was "Everything during that time is blurred together in a confusing stream." She honestly didn't remember me visiting her in the hospital at all, though I was there all day for a couple days, and we went on walks together down the hall while she wheeled her morphine drip along with her. Who knows what drugs Link may have been soaking in. So, I'm okay accepting that the king, who died 100 years ago, already had experience or had heard or read others describing experience that the Shrine of Ressurection causes temporary amnesia, and once Link is not soaking in medical fluids, he can form new memories and with the right hint, become reunited with older memories. What interests me is that in the game, it's easy for game designers to start us out with amnesia. All they have to do is make us become a character and not tell us the story of how the character got here. No backstory = amnesia. And then we form new memories with the character, and through flashbacks, we regain memories previously lost. All we're doing here is using story mechanisms to make us empathize with Link. We are not separated from Link by him having memories we don't have. We are together with him, lacking access to earlier memories. We regain those memories together with him. Link can't remember stuff. We're okay with that because we don't remember those same things, so we can be there as Link while he doesn't remember stuff we also don't remember. Link and Player One can gain new memories together, and Link and Player One can have a flashback together and regain old memories. It works. It helps us willingly suspend our disbelief that we are Link.

I don't claim to be an expert in amnesia, so let's just go with the information in this video to poke a few holes I noticed while watching it. Link might, in fact, have amnesia (possibly caused by the resurrection shrine), but within the first 2 minutes or so of this video, one of the cases for him having anmesia is stated ... fatigue and blood loss. As we see in the scene in the game where Zelda finally unlocks her sealing power, Link is barely able to stand, meaning he has been put through the ringer, and been chased by enemy after enemy after being wounded by Ganon until he is exhausted (and most likely losing blood due to the injury ... but they can't show blood because ... Zelda game), and barely able to stand, as we see in the cutscene from the memory mentioned above. Also, were there any specific dates or times given as to when the shrine of resurrection was found and the time of Calamity Ganon's attack? No, there weren't. So how can you possibly say that they haven't tested the shrine? Testing it would be the only way that Zelda would know about the shrine's drawback (affecting its resident's memory). Besides, do you really think that there were only those few Shika or other Hylians who were shown working with the Guardians that were handling everything regarding the ancient Sheikah technology that they were excavating? Highly doubtful, especially with as much of the technology that was shown unearthed during the game. It's more likely that there were at least several teams working on various projects and excavations during that time, which would mean that there were also teams that would test those pieces of technology out (just like they were testing out how to control the Guardians in the memory that is found at Hyrule Castle near Zelda's Diary ... the one where the king scolds Zelda for wasting her time on the Sheikah tech and not trying to access her sealing power). Link doesn't suffer from anterograde amnesia. You said it yourself. It's the inability to create new memories. If that were the case, then why would he remember how to activate the shrines? Or who to return to when a side quest was completed? To say nothing that a century of little to no oxygen being present in the shrine would most likely kill him while he was recovering ... kinda counterproductive if you ask me. And, if he did have anterograde amnesia, he wouldn't have been able to recall anything prior to his being placed in the Shrine of Resurrection without help from the Sheikah Slate. If that's the case, then why is he able to remember the other 4 Champions during the game. He wasn't using his Sheikah Slate during those memories. Plus ... come on ... oxygen deprivation? Was there a rush of air coming into the resurrection shrine (or any of the others, for that matter) when they were opened? No, there wasn't. Not one single instance is there a rush of air going into any of the shrines at any time, which means that none of them were air tight. So there is no oxygen deprivation. There is proof that there is no lack of oxygen inside the resurrection shrine within the first 1 minute 5 seconds of the game. When Zelda is calling out to Link to wake up, we are shown that Link's face is not submerged in the shallow pool of liquid he is laying in BEFORE the liquid begins to drain away. Also, if the shrine was air tight, he'd suffocate because of that. The Resurrection Shrine isn't that big, and certainly not large enough to contain 100 years of air for Link to breathe, even with the reduced air intake that occurs while someone is sleeping ... so then, why bother keeping his mouth and nose out of the liquid? It makes no logical sense to waste the time with the just enough liquid in that pool to leave his face uncovered only to have him run out of air. Another thing ... there was NEVER a mention of Purah finding the runes Link uses during the game after Ganon attacked. She simply stated that some of the runes were not activated, and that the Sheikah Slate basically needed to a re-install of its sofware, or it needed to have its software repaired because the runes that are unlocked at Purah's place had become corrupted over time, requiring her to restore, or repair the data that still existed in the Sheikah Slate in the first place (besides, Zelda was using the camera function (one of the runes Purah unlocks for Link in the game) in one of Link's memories (when she talks about the Silent Princess flower), so what makes you think that the runes weren't discovered until after Ganon's attack?) I know this is just a theory, but it's a poorly researched one. I don't pretend to be some sort of master theorist, but from what I saw in the video, and what I've seen and experienced in the game (several times), this theory leaves out a lot of information that could have made it go another way. I don't mean to sound rude, or disrespectful, or anything like that ... and please don't take any of this the wrong way ... but, next time it might be a good idea to look at all of the facts (play the game yourself, or watch the game being played by someone else) to make sure you have all of the information before making a theory that has this many holes in it.

For the sake of argument, you could claim that hypoxia plays a role in both retrograde and anterograde amnesia. Presuming blood loss and/or cardiac arrest as the cause of retrograde amnesia, the resulting anoxic brain injury could in theory cause the damage to the hippocampus. Further, Link actually does take notes throughout the game in the original Japanese, in the Sheikah slate. In the English translation, that's lost. I don't know that I think he's developed anterograde amnesia, but the theory isn't so far fetched based on what we know through the game.

@Luke Kelling True, but with as many holes in the theory as there were, I felt that they needed to be pointed out ... especially if the channel wants to keep making theory videos. Coming up with a theory means trying to come to a conclusion by piecing things together based on available evidence ... and this theory was leaving out a lot of evidence that is shoved in the player's face during the game (as well as some basic common sense and logic) in order to make the facts fit the theory instead of the theory fitting the facts.

There's no evidence to suggest that the Sheikah Slate even has a note-taking function. Also if Link truly had Anterograde Amnesia, he wouldn't be able to remember what the different Runes do, or that he has access to Revali’s Gale, Urbosa’s Fury, or Daruk’s Protection, all three of which require activation of some sort and this can not be used if the user is unaware they have these abilities. We also know things like the Quests tab in the inventory are for the player’s sake and not written down by Link to help him remember because of the usage of the pronoun ”you”. If it was Link writing these things, we would see “I” in its place. Also other notes written in the items section of the inventory mention things that weren't told to us, like Mipha’s skill with a spear as described in the Lightscale Trident description

Wait I just figured something out.. listen please So we all know link was mute before the calamity and the only person her spoke to was Zelda. Hear me out. After the calamity and his coma, he came out with amnesia. Keep that in mind. Before the calamity he was mute because he was stressed with all the eyes on him. After the calamity with amnesia, he forgot why he was mute. He forgot about the eyes on him, and the stress, so he went back to talking to everyone. Which is why you can see all those talkative dialogue options after the calamity. Because he forgot about his stress before the calamity! So it is confirmed that yes, Zelda was the only person he spoke to before the incident. But afterwards with his amnesia, he spoke to everybody cause he forgot about all the eyes on him. I feel so smart right now. I just pray he sees this

I know I'm a little late to the party, but there was something regarding your Anterograde amnesia theory that I wanted to say. In my opinion there is concrete proof that at the very least might make you think twice about your theory. This proof is the quest called "Zora Stone Monuments". In this quest Link is asked by a Zora named Jiahto to visit ten stone monuments scattered around the Zora Domain and report back to him what they say so that he can compile them into one book for future generations to read. During this quest there is no evidence that Link ever writes down what each monument says. (It's possible I'm wrong though.) After he visits each monument he returns to talk with Jiahto and the quest is completed. It seems that if Link does have Anterograde amnesia then he wouldn't be able to complete this quest. Those are just my thoughts though. Great video as always!

thank you, i came down here looking for this comment. muscle memory is a thing. even when people wake up amnesic, they can still remember how to hold their pencil and write, even if they've forgotten their own names. people who have had long-term jobs doing the same labor over and over again (manufacturing, assembly line, machinery, and yes, even martial arts) can still remember how to do complicated operations even after forgetting memories of past events.

Game Theory is more prone to entertainment than quality. I was in the camp of "He needs to get shit for years of low quality," and the DEFY Media thing happened and I was disgusted by the idiots saying "Hueheh, he deserves to be broke for this," because he needed to get shit for bad quality, not be at risk of losing is home and family with his infant/toddler son being stuck in what amounts to collateral.

This is really good content, the editing and production values have increased twentyfold since your first few vids, and twofold since your last one. As to the theory, I respectfully disagree. Link lost his memory because he dies. It's understated in the last memory, making the player believe he is simply going unconscious. That final, understated, simple look he gives Zelda before closing his eyes is him telling her that he cares for her--not love, but care. Since the spirit of the chosen hero would be a little more difficult to kill than a normal person, it takes a while for link to fully die, which is why the sheikah warriors had time to get link to the Chamber. Zelda knew, as she looked into Link's eyes, that he had died, and that's why she knew that his memory would be wiped--Link's body was dead, but his soul was hanging on for a little while longer. Even so, you deserve way more subs than 58k. At least 100k.

Yeah, I don't think he has anterograde amnesia. In spite of the Sheikah Slate, it's not shown whether or not Link can write notes down or anything of that nature, not to mention he becomes aware of how the Sheikah Towers and the shrines work.

Link retains new memories, how else would he know what all his clothes do, what each ingredient for food does, knowing that he has a house and hangs the picture with him and the champions in said house. Link remembers to go to hyrule castle to fight ganon after only seeing him there once, link remembers that he can shield bash a guardian laser. So many variables to this to easily disprove the fact that he can't retain new memories. He is able to get his old memories back upon visiting locations so his amnesia is fully temporary. Unless you don't do it

One thing I was hoping you addressed was skill: for most players, their first playthrough is rough until a quarter or half way through the game. This in conjunction with link's reputation as a master swordsman suggests he still needs to rebuild his skills throughout the adventure. Without knowing much about amnesia, this requires a type of present memory building in link

the shrine of resurrection was built with really good technology, i think it is a bit of a stretch to say it wouldnt have ventilation. Also having very low oxygen levels would probably make recovery even more difficult, and if it could bring his body back from the gates of death couldnt it have kept his hippocampus in working order? You cant replace lost memories but that doesnt mean you cant repair brain damage, like replacing lost pages in a book, you may not know what was originally on the pages but you can put new pages in to be filled out later. as for the king, he might be an asshole or he might want to be absolutely sure link can still handle himself. either way, fantastic video, i totally buy the blood loss part that caused retrograde amnesia.

Here's my two cents on why he remembers the King's promise for the paraglider: Link is likely inherently that way and takes oaths and promises very seriously, regardless of his upbringing. In fact the amnesia probably made this side of him even more pronnounced than normal. There's also the point that Rhoam is the one saying this - perhaps indirectly, subconsciously, rubbing against other memories, and it agitates him when someone tries to presumably back out of their promise or not follow through. The way I saw it, he only doesn't remember the days leading up the Calimity and the 36-48 hours after Ganon awakened. I think of the trauma of it all, clinically dying - head injury, lack of blood and oxygen flow to the brain or not - is what really caused it. Robbie mentions that Link still has the scars from the injuries he sustained. At minimum, given his outward condition in the final memory, he has likely been hit by guardian beams directly once and possibly glanced by two or three others, hence the injured shoulder. Even in game, glanced hits by guardian beams don't take off near the damage a direct hit would.

There are some things about the Shrine of Ressurection that I think you're forgetting (ironically) in your atterograde theory. Remember that this device is thousands of years more advanced than anything _we_ have, and is at least half magic in its nature. Also remember that this machine brought him back from recent death or at least near-death, completely healed his injuries, kept him alive and stopped him from aging for 100 years, and did all of this without giving him anything we'd recognize as food or water. I doubt that a lack of oxygen (let's remember that he wss fully submerged in that blue liquid anyway) would be a problem. Don't forget that in the Japanese version of the game the Sheika Slate notes are written by Link himself in first person.

Very nice, I did a write up for English 102 based on amnesia because of this game and Link's situation. This video captured my thoughts on the matter perfectly. Another thing about this situation is that Link regaining the memories on the slate or single memories of the champions doesn't cure him of amnesia. He'd have no knowledge of what his former life was like. He'd have names and faces of Zelda and the champions but thats all based on those memories but he wouldn't remember them entirely from them. Next make a video on how the memories he receives from the places on the slate may not really be his but Zelda's.

Idk about the anterograde amnesia, I doubt the highly advanced sheika medical facility would forget that people need air to live. Link was probably either sealed in the water with an oxygen mask, or the water isn’t water, and it has magic that lets people breath while it’s around them, like how the fairies don’t drown in their fountains.
