This is an introduction to basic breathing principles. In Part 2 John Paul will explain how to develop the breathing once the registers are ready to coordinate.

Thank you! I just have ended the breathe chapter from the Friesell's book. And your explanation made this as clear as possible. But if breathing is rather instinctive or unconscious process (we shouldn't push or support our voices by doing extra pressure under the vocal chords), what helps us to prevent vocal fatigue? I think it is widely known that if you aren't gonna kill your voice you should support it. So, how should we support our voices to prevent vocal fatigue? Is there such a thing as supported voice? thanks!!!

The secret is to sing with such thin vocal folds that they just sit on the air or 'lean' (appoggio) on the air. When the vocal folds are too thick they resist the air too much. The air needs to move freely through the vocal folds and they vibrate within it. When the voice is free there is no sense of pushing or holding. The air just moves in and out and the voice rides on the outbreath. It's important to work on the breathing but if you don't get the registers balanced then the voice will never be free.

@@JussiPaul Thanks you, sir! When I took vocal classes I was always tought to sing in full, big, loud and powerful voice. There weren't any idea of using falsetto or singing softly. These things still seem like another world for me. And thak you again! I qiute understood you!

@@bigpiglove We do need a big, loud and powerful voice to sing opera but the only way to achieve that is to begin with the falsetto. Nobody can fill a theatre with sound by simply singing as loud as possible. The laws of physics just do not allow this. But if we aim for resonance rather than volume it is possible to create a voice that can fill a theatre with sound. I've only ever heard one voice (a Russian soprano) that completely filled the theatre (Covent Garden) with resonance. She completely drowned out the famous tenor that was singing with her and I think she was a 'stand in' that evening!

@@JussiPaul Damn! Somebody should fix youtube problems! I wrote yesterday a huge message and it's gone. In short, thatnk you for the answer. And I totally agree that soft singing without pushing makes a voice more flexible and more resonant! Thank you for all your answers!

Very informative. Is it possible to learn this breath without a teacher?
@JussiPaul

Yes! All a teacher can do is show you how to do it which I have done with this video. The hard part is to make it a habit! Like I say in the video the breath will develop as the registers develop and you really need a teacher to help with establishing the registers correctly. Once the registers are free and strong then you can work without a teacher as it's really a personal choice as to how to use the registers.

@@dariusfischer5263 I don't know if there are any other teachers out there. I'm the only teacher that I know of but there may be others!

Sir, practicing on my own (not very proud of) I noticed that I picked up a very bad habit of raising my larynx to unhealthy levels. The strain is visible on my neck through veins and muscles popping out throughout the 4th octave and is actually audible from notes F and above. They sound shrill and like I'm on helium. Kind of like this John Mayer video (he sounds like he has a raised larynx too) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pah5q7aUr5vWnI0.html I've heard people say don't let the larynx rise up, but how do I do that? If I don't stretch my neck in a certain way the notes won't even come out.
