How To Fix the Sequoia Ignition When The Key Won't Turn

Today we show you how to remove and replace a broken ignition cylinder from a Toyota Sequoia or Tundra, when the key will no longer turn inside it.

@CliffjumperCars Appreciate the help and video. I fixed my 2001 Sequoia 2WD starting with your procedure and modified it slightly. I ended up with a key for ignition and another key for the doors which was fine by me. Here's the process I did for anyone else coming here for help: - Purchased from Autozone LockSmart Part LC64730. Comes with 2 new transponder keys - part cost around $250. I didn't have the locksmith re-key it as my keys were 20+ years old and were worn. In fact, one was bent some but they work just fine in the doors. So, now I have door keys and an ignition key. - My key wouldn't turn either, so I drilled out the little pin you referenced in the video - it took me a solid 10 to 15min to get that done. Don't give up, just keep going and eventually, you can pull out the ignition key cylinder. - Pushed the new cylinder part referenced above into place (like in your video). Now you're ready to program. Programming the new keys to the Immobilizer (Must have the old key to program). The immobilizer is the black ring that shows the key placement of ACC / On. During disassembly, it will hang by its wiring harness. - Place old key in hanging immobilizer and just let it hang - this will tell the car computer that the correct key is being used. Try to start the car with the new key to confirm system is tricked so-to-speak. It should start. Then turn key to off position. - Turn back to ON (since immobilizer ring is hanging you'll have to guess a little. Maybe 2 clicks before the car starts) - Press gas pedal down/up 5 times -Then, press brake pedal down/up 6 times - Do this step quickly: Remove key from hanging immobilizer and set to the side. Remove the new key from the ignition. Place immobilizer ring back on the ignition cylinder about where it goes so not hanging anymore and insert the new key back in the ignition. (don't turn key). - Press gas pedal once and wait 1 minute. You should see the blinking security light. - Once the blinking security light stops blinking and goes out, your key is now programmed. Start the car to confirm. - Repeat these steps for the second new key. Only this time you can keep the immobilizer ring on and use the programmed new key to start the programming for second key. - You should have two new programmed keys now for the ignition and your old key that will work for the doors.

Thanks for the video! I have the same issue. I think I have a transponder key and want to keep that key (looks exactly like yours). I talked to my locksmith and will need an "uncoded" cylinder and then he can code it. I think that is what you ended up doing too - is that what you refer to as the Ignition tumbler/switch assembly? Do you have the part number for the 2001? Thanks!

The part number should be the same for any Gen1 Sequoia, they didn't change the tumbler assembly at all for a long time. I used the one from Autozone: Locksmart Ignition Lock Cylinder LC64800 and had the locksmith change the tumblers in it to match my original key, so I would not have to rekey my doors. The lock cylinder itself does not have the electronic coding - that is housed in the plastic ring that inserts around the lock cylinder. It stays in place when you change the cylinder, so you don't have to recode your car.

Replacement ignition tumbler/switch assembly was $70 at Autozone, and the locksmith rekeying it to match the existing keys was $75. All in for just a little less than $150.
