Dark Mild was a style that almost completely went extinct in the 60s losing popularity to the Best Bitter and the Lager.
Find out about the history of the Dark Mild as well as how to brew your own version, and what it ends up tasting like!
Iʹm tackling the D&D Darndarr in this series of brewing D&D beers. With this style I decided to try and make a Dark Mild, the drink that lost popularity in the 1960s and has a nice strong nutty flavour!
What would Beers and Ales in the world of Dungeons and Dragons taste like? Iʹm putting this to the test and brewing the entirety of the D&D Ales list with my own rendition of them!

FYI if you want a more historically accurate Dark Mild - search for Ron Pattinson's blog - he did a book on Mild too. Very few examples had dark malts. The color typically came from inverted sugar syrups and caramel.

Thanks i'll give it a look! I did think of using Caramel as per the initial Milds after the Free Mash Tun Act but figured to get enough would cost me more than I could achieve with grain 😅

The Mild that I made was simply an Scottish 60/- with a little dark Belgian candi sugar thrown in to darken it. It went over quite well for such a low-ABV, low-hopped beer (I live in the land of Monster IPAs - the Pacific Northwest). AFAIK,one other pressure that kept driving down the alcohol levels of British beer was taxation. I'm not sure it's still that way in Britain, but last I knew they taxed beer by their OG. The more sugar in the wort, the higher the tax. BTW, I almost always add a little oats to the mash to add a little body and aid head retention.

Belgian Candi for darkening is a good idea! Covers that "Caramel" type point somewhat also! That's a good point regarding taxation! Agreed, oats in mash for low abv beers I feel is almost a must for that extra bit of body!

Very cool! I've never done a mild before and like you, have no idea what it even tastes like. I'll have to base my recipe off of yours when I do one in the future. May be a bit "weird" but I think its supposed to be like that, sounds like you nailed it.

Thanks very much! It's definitely a weird one, i'd recommend brewing one up, tasting it when its ready, giving it a week then going back for another taste. I feel like it's a flavour you need to get acquainted with before it starts to become enjoyable! Let me know when you do end up making one, would love to know how yours turns out!

Living in a beer desert that is Wyoming sometimes it is hard to find a good representation of what a beer I am brewing should taste like. All I can do is read the BJCP guidelines and hope my beer hits all the points. Luckily I have family in Fort Collins so I can usually pick up some good commercial varieties when I visit.

I brew in 2 days. Just throwing what I got together. Just for info so you can tell me it’s wrong, btw I don’t read comments so have at it. 1/2 lb malted grain, 1lb Pilsner light extract, 12g chinook hops, 5 at boil, the rest with 10 min to go, and a nice Kohlch yeast.
@NikitaVorontsov
@NikitaVorontsov 2 жыл бұрын
To be honest that doesn't sound awful! Depends what your malted grain is! I'd add a bit more Roasted Malts in there (unless thats what the malted grain consists of), but should be a nice brew!

Well worth trying! Weird style but good. I feel like it sits neatly between an Irish Red and a Stout

We've been meaning to brew a dark mild for years but never got around to it. It's a hard style to find but I think it would be interesting. Also lol at the neighbors. The lady next door always mows her lawn as soon as we set up for the pre-brew interviews.

I feel we’ve lost awesome beers to history. Why can’t we have 9% milds today?

Most likely just a shift! History is cyclical so most likely we'll end up with a cask and mild season at some point soon!

One of the first recipes I brewed was a mild. (a somewhat different recipe, but similar enough.) I did not use oats, but they would be a great addition to the recipe. I quite enjoyed it, and would probably brew it again. I agree that it's a little bit odd. Very nutty! Mine finished at 1.008, so it's a little dryer than your recipe. It is a "young" ale, but it does improve with age. Cheers!
@NikitaVorontsov
@NikitaVorontsov 2 жыл бұрын
That’s interesting with the dryer finish, I was quite worried going dryer might end up too watery!

Personally I stay away from Brown malt, almost can't stand that stuff. I make Milds now and then because it's a wonderful session beer, but I put the emphasis on caramel and chocolate instead of roasty and toasty.
@NikitaVorontsov

Relax, don’t worry. Have a home brew! You know that aging only helps round out the flavors in a beer. I’m sure it will be delicious in a month. Cheers 🍻 Btw, wish me luck. I’m making your black grog ale today. Just waiting on the strike water to get up to temp. I decided on doubling it to 6 gallons.
