Every now and then something will occur that will incite a debate about modesty in clothing in our culture and this is important because most of us can agree that modesty is a good thing and the reason we know it’s a good thing is because we hate it when people act immodestly around us based on whatever standard we uphold.
We don’t like it when others act arrogantly in proximity to ourselves. Nobody likes it when someone else boasts or brags excessively or flagrantly attempts to capture any and all attention for themselves leaving nothing for the rest of us.
Like for example, nobody likes the person with the one-up story. You know who I mean by this? Like when you’re in a group and you tell a story that you think people will find interesting and then they jump in right after yours with an, “Oh ya, well one time I did something even better.”
So I hope we can all admit that modesty in its various forms is something we can all appreciate as a good that helps us all get along as a society. But what about modesty in how we present ourselves physically and especially in the way we dress?

@Channy Whocares I was referring more to what we say, not how much we say. But in a way, yes. If we were more thoughtful and careful with what we say, where we say it, how often, etc, that is a form of modest behavior. It's all about considering God above others, others above self, and thinking of self last.

Along with modesty also comes with being modest on the inside. How you speak or treat others, how you handle situations etc.

Yes! It’s so unpopular and it’s (modesty) so pleasing to Father God; “An excellent wife, who can find for her worth is far above jewels. The heart of her husband trusts in her and he shall have no lack of gain. She does him good and not evil all the days of her life. ………for charm is deceitful and beauty is vain but a woman who fears the Lord, let her works praise her in the gates.” Proverbs 31. It's weird because I know personally women and men who dress modestly but inside they have no modesty and the way they dress makes people automatically assume that they are good God fearing people. Modesty is not just what you wear on the outside it starts within your heart the heart that God sees because you could be covered from head to toe and not be a good person. I agree with dressing modestly but I would never judge a person on what they are wearing because clothes do not make the man.

I believe modesty should be more normalised in our current society. i’ve heard people shame other women for dressing in long skirts or covering up which really sucks. Sorry I'm late. Amen!! We blame SO much on guys and how they shouldn't be looking, but who is the one dressing like that? Yes it is 50/50 guys shouldn't be looking and girls shouldn't be dressing inappropriately. We can be confident without wearing revealing clothing!!!! Also this whole body positivity is DESTROYING modesty!!!! You are seeking approval from other people online, instead you should be seeking approval from God. If you aren't doing it to seek approval online and from other people I can assure you that someone is going to lust by looking at your body positive trend. Yes stretch marks are normal and body fat is normal and we should take care and be confident in the body that God gave us but we should be showing off our heart's because the heart is more important than the body. I am a girl and I struggled with this too. We should be sympathetic towards guys and guys should be sympathetic towards girls too. Just think of how many more relationships would last longer if we ALL dressed modestly because there are guys who have a relationships with people just because of the body and it's awful. This is going to be awkward but I have to say this. Guys and girls have SO MUCH access to porn, inappropriate content, inappropriate pictures on insta, and litterally anywhere else on social media, this is because of lust and inappropriately dressed MEN and WOMEN. Even with bikinis just because you are swimming doesn't mean it's okay to dress lile that. Bikinis are inappropriate and even 1 pieces are inappropriate too (some of them and most of them). I wear a t-shirt and shorts to swim in because protection of someone's heart is more important than comfort. Even if you don't wear a bikini to make people lust or anything else like that it WILL make people lust!!!! I love you girls and guys so so so so much!!!! Guys and girls NEED to dress appropriately because it affects the heart and leads them to the wrong path. Love all of you!!!! I hope you all have a blessed day!!!

Yes, isn't it interesting how nowadays so many girls are so insecure about their weight, their cellulite, their body hair, etc. etc. when all of these things can easily be covered or masked by clothing and never have to be publicly discussed? It's a public conversation because we MAKE it one every time we wear something revealing. Many women think it is their right to freely dress how ever they want, but never take into consideration that there could ever be consequences to that, AND are unwilling to accept the consequences when they do come.

In college I fell for the liberal idea that I could dress however I wanted and it wouldn't affect others' perception of me, but after bring treated like garbage and groped and harassed, I realized that wasn't true. I discovered that, contrary to what I was taught, I *could* dress modestly without people picking on me. How you carry yourself is an expression of who you are, if one says i do not mind that people see me naked or half naked which in a perfect world without original sin would be ideal then they are expressing certain characteristics about themselves. People believe it or not wear clothes to reflect their character. Consider the fact the inventor of the bikini could only get strippers to wear it when it was first released, while society see's this today as completely normal what goes on in people's mind's especially men is EXACTLY the same as the first man who seen it. Please understand women's fashions today actually originated as fashions FOR men BY men, in celebrity culture many women know in order to keep up they gotta be at their physical peak and for the most part expose that at every opportunity, women are perceptive enough to know that beauty can wield great power especially in Hollywood and pop culture and therefore new generations of woman look up to them. For men we have also become very vain and i say this as someone who has seeked more physical perfection and also purposely wore tank tops, tight shirts to try and get ahead in the dating arena. When we are single we tend to use all of our faculties. I perhaps didn't realize aswell that women actually lust at men wearing such clothes until well into wearing them. I notice that physical fitness is becoming more popular which is a good thing but the line between wanting to be fit and look good physically and downright vanity is quite thin and i feel we ALL slip over the line sometimes. Essentially immodesty affects both men and women and as someone who has lustfully sinned after women especially those who were immodest i always smirk when a woman says something along of the lines of dressing in whatever they are comfortable with. In our spiritual journey with Christ many things we were once comfortable with will become detestable.

I disagree with men dressing modestly. Men *should* dress modestly and men need to think about this too. If a guy walks around in a tight, sleeveless shirt, showing off his muscles, then he is making the wrong decision and is not demonstrating proper values. Why dress like that? And you can't tell me you don't know what I'm talking about. It was *never* the norm for men to walk around essentially topless, often while wearing form-fitting pants, until recently. In the 50s, men in their 20s were often in suits. Now, men in their 20s wear pants that expose their underwear and form-fitting shirts with no sleeves. It is disgraceful.

I mean when he talked about modest mens clothing he spoke about how his shirt didn't expose anything including the muscles he may or may not have. As far as the underwear exposure and sagging goes I don't believe that he spoke to that because he was going off the assumption that the basic mens style involves properly wearing a belt. Which is what most of the country does, and more than likely most of his audience. So I doubt he finds that acceptable, however he probably didn't think about it. As to why he focused on women, I would assume it likely has to do with my previous comments about not thinking about those who sagg their pants and because frankly men are the ones who typically take more sexual pleasure from the visual. I mean that exact reason is why I tend to try to date modest women. They aren't showing the world what they have so I take them more seriously, as I expect them to take themselves more seriously and their life choices more seriously than a woman who can't wait to buy that see through top. But yeah you can say the same for men. I mean who would you take more seriously, the man walking around the neighborhood shirtless or the man wearing a suit?

@Patz13 Yeah but women hold a lot more power over the visual, because men take the visual much more seriously. Which is why women's laungerey is so much larger of an industry than it is for men. Why women are the large majority of strippers in the world and so on. All don't call names that's just uncalled for. I mean we're all adults here let's not start acting like we're 12. I know what she said and understand how that could be construed as offensive but there are other ways to handle it.

WOW. This. Was. Amazing! Sadly, the topic of modesty has become so "taboo" even among fellow devout Catholics. This video did an excellent job of really getting at the heart of the issue. Modesty is spectacularly beautiful and, as a 25 year old woman, the beauty and freedom there is in modest dress is indescribable. I don't understand how us women gave up our dresses and skirts and fell for the lie that in doing so we have become more "liberated" and "equal". What a crying shame. Thank you Brian Holdsworth for yet again another incredible video!!

Dressing modestly only affects the person wearing the clothes, vast majority of the time. Saturday was rainy, but I still needed to go grocery shopping. I wore regular flowy pants, rain boots, a crew neck tee shirt(that wasn't remotely tight), and a rain jacket. I just wore a wide headband to covery hair, as it doesn't behave in the rain. I wore minimal makeup(basically natural brows, and brown mascara). And STILL a creepy guy followed me around the toothpaste and soap aisle, asking for my number, and making stalker-ish comments. I wasn't dressed immodestly, not remotely. I don't understand why so many people think they can control the reactions of other people by their clothing alone.

Ive literally been mocked for dressing modestly for the past year since converting to Catholicism. My mom has called me an old lady and a Mormon because of the clothes ive been newly interested in. Just last monday a male friend called me a Mormon for my high coverage, baggy dress. Why is it the stereotype that Mormons dress modestly and not the rest of us Christians? And why does it make more sense to mock someone for covering their body than it does to mock someone for being indecent in a public place?

This is inspiring as a teen in today’s world. People dress and express their style which is beautiful... but at the same time I’m not opposed to a dress code because there would be less judgement and pressure. It made me tear up when you talked about the fact that we are vulnerable with people we love, and that a man should earn that trust you give him with your body only after showing love and commitment. I believe in purity. Modesty to me is about honoring my husband, wherever he may be and whenever he will come into my life. I also cried at the end, when you pointed out the fact that we have been trying to make men and women equal but have done exactly the opposite.

I know I'm just some random guy, who would definitely be labeled as a traditionalist, just to give you insight into my personal bias, but I find women to be far more attractive when they veil and cover their beauty. I find their modesty to be a virtue that I deeply respect and love. And if I'm being honest, its simply beautiful. And it can be done in so many different ways such that there is flexibility and options for everyone. At Liturgy we veil and cover the things we find the most sacred. I think in how we treat our bodies we should do the same. Our bodies are sacred, lets veil and cover that which we find to be the most beautiful, leaving it as a mystery to give to the person we are united to in a sacramentally valid marraige. Edit: I'm seeing a lot of people who seem to misunderstand my position this is to clarify so as not to cause a stumbling block for my brothers and sisters. the idea of veiling is not about being covered in a burka, nor is it having head to toe covered. It means seeing the beauty and sacredness of oneself. Men are called to modesty just as women are. I'm speaking about women because being Male means that is where my interest lies. Nothing I said is normative, just my own humble opinion, but it is most certainly not about oppressing women. Quite the opposite, it is about helping myself, others, and themselves acknowledge their sacred beauty which is a gift from God

I agree for modesty as long as it does not call for the face to be hidden for God does call for our light to shine and smiling at people and knowing when they are sad and need a loving word is important. I think the modesty should not be to the point of being invisible or unrecognizable but I do not think that is what you are talking about. There are some people who just take modesty (especially for women) too far. Again that is not the impression I get from you. It is just that you used the word veil and I really dislike face veils and feel that is only for people in the snow or for criminals.

Suzanne, he wrote the word "veil" not as a LITERAL....VEIL, but as a metaphor, as in "being covered. At least that's how I understand it. It was actually a beautifully written statement. True story. My then 18 year old daughter came home from an evening out at the pub. She banged excitedly on my bedroom door. "Mum! Mum! You were right! You were right!" She launched through the door and landed in a happy heap on my bed. Beaming. She had been out with a friend who dressed very provocatively. My daughter dressed well, but modestly. The girls had been joined by a group of young men. They were like bees round a honeypot to her friend, not paying much attention to my daughter. The friend then went to the bathroom. A handsome young man apologised to my daughter for not getting so much attention. The young man explained that the boys all had just one thing in mind with her friend. He then said: "But every one of us would be proud to have a girl like you as our girlfriend". The other young men nodded in agreement. "You see, Mum" my daughter said solemnly, "Girls who dress all tarty get loads of attention off boys, but it's the wrong type of attention. Was that what you meant?" I struggled not to laugh "Something like that, darling, yes"

I love this so much! I've always dressed in what most Catholics would see as "modest" (no sleeveless shirts/dresses or tank tops, no short shorts of short skirts, leggings aren't pants, etc.), but over the past year I've really started to pay a lot more attention to what I wear and have really ramped up that self-awareness, and ever since then I have been a huge advocate for dressing modestly! At this point in time, I always wear long skirts, long sleeved shirts, dresses, and I always cover my hair. If I do wear pants, they're VERY loose. You know those soft flowey pants? Those ones. Nothing that would show off my figure. I was never the type of person to wear makeup all the time in the first place, so that wasn't really an issue for me. I do wear makeup for special events and business stuff, but other than that I pretty much go bare-faced all the time. And I also emphasize that modesty is a lifestyle, not just a dress code. I really try to prescribe to the idea of the "Marian modesty" movement.

The reason why men and woman should be modest with their clothing is to help this fallen society better cope with their jealousy and sexual drives. In the old days you never saw your neighborliness's wife naked or close to naked (bikini). And there was no tv and magazines to consistently force you to compare her or your body to the ideal. The Amish I think has coped the best with it in their strange way. Every woman and man basically wears the same outfits and pretty modest at that. It helps reign in that monster inside us all. I hate this modern world for the simple fact it woke up something inside of me that I wish never existed. But it's there. I cannot deny it or snap my fingers and take it away. I just need to help myself and others cope with our fallen state as well as possible. It's only a few decades you need to hold out... compared to eternity. ;)

God created us to be fully nude with NO SHAME and it was only when we started playing our own game that we started viewing our bodies as disgraceful. 99% of clothing has nothing to do with trying to be sexy, it's just the individual wearing what makes them comfortable. You probably think lust and sexuality are the same thing...guess what?...THEY'RE NOT. Sexuality is completely natural, healthy and proven to lengthen a life span. Lust is a manipulation of sexuality that harms yourself and others. Having a sexual feeling for someone isn't "lusting" after them. God created us to be sexual beings, that's why He gave us genitals and sex hormones. Much of it is "barely there", missing half of it, "peekaboo", even see-through. The pants are spray on and deliberately shredded and torn. I have been utterly disgusted trying to shop for clothing for my teenaged daughters. It is to the point that it is almost impossible to find decent, reasonably stylish and appropriately modest clothing for older girls and young women. I was a teenager in the 1980s, and everyday clothing for both sexes (unless you were Madonna or a stripper) was generally very modest. Everyone wore loose shirts (polos, button-downs, or a heavy cotton t shirt) tucked in, with jeans or pants, which were heavier material and straight-legged, often with a belt. Dresses were long enough to wear without leggings. No rips, no visible bra straps, black lace, spandex, no yoga pants outlining your privates in public, no men with their butts hanging out of their shorts. I would really like to see women start saying "no" to the fashion industry that is pushing increasingly immodest clothing that degrades women and robs our dignity.

This is also a bit toxic in that it further pushes that people cannot help themselves because we allow ourselves to be vulnerable in front of strangers. People should dress how they want and what makes them comfortable no matter what gender they are and society around them should learn to get over it and mind their own business. If dressing modestly makes you happy, awesome, but don't judge someone else because they want to wear a shorter skirt. What was surprising for me personally was that I experienced was a greater sense of freedom. There was no need to avoid looking at people, who were dressed immodestly, as we have in our culture. Here, we have to pretend that immodesty is good, that immodesty is empowering, by not averting our eyes. Where what was once considered immodest and exploitative is now seen as empowering! The older I get the less I care about what other people think of me and the more comfortable I got with my body. I wear whatever makes me happy now and "wow" this made me happier. Who would have thought. It is incredibly judgemental to look down on strangers and just because you judge people because of the things they wear doesn't mean everybody else is like you. A man's thoughts and actions are his own responsibility. If he's thinking horrible things about another person based on clothing choices, or he does something unacceptable based on someone else's clothing, that is his own fault. If I were naked and a man came upon me it would be HIS responsibility to NOT RAPE ME. Putting the responsibility for men's actions on women is so messed up. If a man stumbles, it's his own fault. He chose to do something wrong, whether that be to rape, molest, catcall, seduce, etc, another person. FYI, women who are totally covered still get raped. They look for girls that are smaller than them, look lost, look intoxicated or shy, with their heads down or headphones in. Traffickers look for the same type. They don't look at what they're wearing, they're predators looking for easy prey. A girl alone in an alley? Perfect victim, no matter if she's wearing a burqa or a tight dress. The reason drunk party girls get raped on the way home is not because of what they're wearing, it's because they're easy prey. Intoxicated, alone, usually out late. Makes them easy to overpower. However this study did find that women with long hair and especially in a pony tail get raped most of the time, while short hair (boy short) girls almost never get victimized by opportunists. So if you wanna be safe, cut that hair. Also a different study found that most women that are raped are single girls or widows, married women are way less likely to be assaulted by strangers. The same thing with clothing not mattering goes for victims where the assailant know his victim, he has then planned the assault and it doesn't matter what she's wearing. Rape is about power and dominance, not sexual attraction. What you're wearing does not matter. End of story.

I'm a seminarian, and while watching this video I was constantly thinking about the pastoral way of communicating this message of modest dress to a congregation. Perhaps too often, messages of this sort come across as judgmental and overly critical, but I think Brian hit the nail on the head. It was really insightful to think about the meaning of femininity, and comparing that to the ugly backdrop of society's current standards when it comes to women's fashion. Also, in a totally unrelated note, I find it interesting when I see people dressed inappropriately for Mass try to act all pious and "holier-than-thou." I've lost count of how many times I've seen someone come to Sunday Mass (i.e. not daily Mass) in athletic shorts, but they do things like receive Communion kneeling and on the tongue, or they always have their hands folded in the prayer posture. There's a clear disconnect that they're not quite getting...

Thank you for adding an intellectual voice to this topic! You are brave as a guy to make this as it can come across as invalidating to lots of women... I would argue that cleaning and outfits and working out and makeup and perfume can have NOTHING to do with caring about how other people are viewing you. I do all of that when I interact with 0 people during the day. Everyone’s different but I’m so sick of people telling women to stop wearing makeup because we’re “doing it for men” absolutely not. I do not look cute for other people, it’s more about confidence and artistically expressing ourselves. That is why modesty in clothing is so confusing to me, throughout my life I’ve never dressed thinking of how guys are viewing me, so dressing modestly forces me to objectify myself. I think women really into modesty are full of themselves thinking how hot they are, I am realistic and don’t go around thinking I’m attracting people. But as a Catholic, women are forced to be presumptuous of our sex appeal. I’d argue it could make women more insecure being forced to analyze our bodies soooo much to find “modest options” Definitely “immodest” clothes are not less comfortable, yoga pants are leggings are soooo much cozier. Especially in summer too living in LA I am way more comfortable in tank tops and crop tops. I just don’t find in any way immodest clothing being forced upon women or being oppressive. That’s just my experience though! Again, thank you for an excellent video!!! Just wanted to add in a female perspective: Your voice is always much appreciated to me!!

I would argue that women forced to analyze our bodies so much to find modest options is a modern problem, as in only the last 70 years fashion have changed progressively to the point that modest dresses are extinct, this was a non issue throughout history until the 50s, women didnt need to overthink it to find modest and decent clothes. We are living in a post-christian and post-sexual revolution world, they won the cultural battle to the point that immodesty is the norm, sadly is the state of society in which we were born and it means making an extra effort in choosing clothing as a follower of Christ and our brothers keepers.

Confidence in what ? This doesn’t make sense. Maybe you are not purposefully doing it for others but unconsciously that’s the reason , seeking confidence in people’s looks. A catholic woman should be confident when she is dressing modestly not only to other people but for herself. Your comment doesn’t make sense

*The idea of "modesty" is a joke. God created us to be fully nude with NO SHAME and it was only when we started playing our own game that we started viewing our bodies as disgraceful. 99% of clothing has nothing to do with trying to be sexy, it's just the individual wearing what makes them comfortable. Clothing does not influence bad actions, character does.*

But confidence is related to others. How can you be confident if you have no one to interact with?? I am from Turkey, young women here wear crop tops and extremely mini shorts on the street while men wear tshirts and jeans. Actually men tend to feel hotter in summer but we women wear less clothes. I dont think it is about summer.

I disagree with a number of the things he said in this video, starting with the original notion that we should only show people close to us parts of our body out of what seems to be other peoples fear (particularly the guy in this video) that they can "use it against us" in some way shape or form. That's the equaivalent of saying that you should wear make up so people don't think you're ugly and treat you differently because of it. Because they definetly will. But you can't let that control you. That's not modestly it's vanity. You should work to be less caught up in what other people think of you. You shouldn't abide by their judgement. Beyond that, the end of the video where he talked about how women don't wear pants the same way men do really annoyed me. He ignored the picture of the man with skinny jeans right underneath the pictures he was showing and then proceded to show the tightest womens pants there were. That didn't annoy me quite as much as when he started highlighting what he considered to be better options for women. I take it this man has never tried to do anything in a dress before? I find them to be inconvienent and uncomfortable. And I'm not alone in that either. I'm more likely to see a girl casually wearing baggy pants than I am in a dress so I know it isn't just a matter of a lack of modesty. If a dress is long and tight, it restricts your range of motion, if it's long and loose, it gets in the way, if it's short you have to keep pulling it down and you have to pay closer attention to the way you sit than you would in jeans. I really hate dresses. I do not wear jeans because I want people looking at my body. I wear them because they're a lot easier to wear than anything else. If people looking at your body makes you insecure then cover it up, but don't expect the same from other people. Not everyone has to be insecure.

exactly!!! and you shouldn't have to justify your choice of clothing to anyone, unless it's in your intention to tell them more about you & your identity. I think are reflective of our identity, but they also exist for comfort reasons and I don't think anyone cares when a man wears shorts to a beach but when a woman wears a bikini (or at least within cultures i've been exposed to) she's TRYING to be seductive, she WANTS something. I feel like, if anything, it's immodest to try to tell someone how to dress and on top of that the type of person you mirror if you dress in a way that is immodest. The reason why I'm so angry, is even if these arguments about little things don't appear to be dangerous, they are. For instance, the type of underwear a woman has worn in the past has been reason to justify rape because she was "asking for it". In Iran, women are killed for not covering their entire body. Young girls self worth is brought down and they are shamed for wanting to express theirselves in the way they feel comfortable with because they're afraid of being seen as too bold or they're scared of creepy men and it's just not right.

Complaining about wearing a dress just shows how much less tolerant we women are today. Women from the past were so much tougher and refined at the same time. Continue ruining society feminists! But not me, I am a proud feminine woman who married a masculine man who likes me to protect my beauty and cover for others. It’s special just for him and it feels so good. He can’t stand it when he sees western women on tv or out in public, he either turns off the tv or looks the other way. He’s a very handsome guy so it must frustrate the women so much that he doesn’t give them that kind of attention. Not to mention how comfortable he makes me feel because he’s not starring at women like a lot of western guys do, sorry western guys but the majority of you have no self control or discipline with this.

@@amandah1875 this is so ignorant of you. Bet you never picked up a book on academic feminism. The reason why you're allowed to even have a KZfaq account is because of the gradual feminine emancipation that a minority of women advocated, even when their kind (like you) did not put faith in them. You cannot generalize a "step out of modesty" as something immoral. What is "immoral" to you might be empowerment to some. Rather ask the intent of the proponents of modest and "immodest" (though they arent) culture and what is their intent, and even then that is very complex and calls for a multi-faceted approach to just even understand half of it. Before imposing how terribly good you are because you're "modest", and chastising other people for not following suit, ask yourself would people be more decent when you take away their freedom, or instead advocate a rights-based model that encapsulates decency and respect.

Sniker Dood God taught us to be modest, I didn’t decide that. Of course there are issues in our society because of immodesty. If Jesus came back to the earth today, I know how he would prefer to see us dressed. You will never agree with me I’m sure. I never said I am good, but Atleast I can follow the guidance of our creator to know that I’m trying.

Amanda H we used to walk around naked. Adam and Eve. I don’t think Jesus would care about the way we are dresses. Clothes are vanity made by humans to cover their bodies cuz they became ashamed once they ate the fruit. If one feels like walking out naked that should not automatically mean they are immoral because we used to roam around naked and are the ones who decided to start dressing. The only thing that makes it bad is the intent behind dressing such a way. Femininity is not all about wearing dresses and skirts either. Men used to wear skirts and dresses.

As a man, I wouldn't want to dress in a way that distracts/creates an uncomfortable situation for women, as I know of the disctracting/uncomfortable situations that immodestly dressed women can put me in. At least from my end of the stick, it's "Treat others as you wish to be treated" more than "I can wear what I want".

Okay guys I have a question...If I see a guy working in the heat with no shirt I can usually say "well he is doing his work and it is not right for me to stare or create some story in my head that he does not wish to be in." Now I used to be a long distant runner and am used to seeing the body in practical terms. I could run in a dress (and have) if it is knee length and has a wide skirt and does not cling but do not usually run in dresses but have often hiked in knee length A line dresses usually where there is no one but my husband and dog is since I am surrounded by wilderness. My shorts that I have (to beat the heat and get relief from the winters in Oregon's mountains that require me to spend over half the year in multiple layers) are knee length. I have never seen the calves as a big deal on a hot day. How is this for the guys? Are calves a sexy thing for you guys or mainly a body part for getting around? I mean I do not stare at at guy's calves except to think oh that guy is exercising; I should do more of that too. I can totally see how the thighs would be different and I feel really uncomfortable when men wear speedos instead of swim shorts but understand that you can swim faster with them cause there is less drag. Maybe you guys could wear spandex shorts to the knees to swim in for speed and reducing chafing. Do you guys and gals also have any ideas about how we can be modest but also exercise and care for our bodies and be safe and practical? I nearly fell flat on my face when running in a long skirt and stepping on it. I would honestly love some suggestions of things that have worked for both men and women being modest. I am glad that Christian men do not expect women to wear men's clothes as they do not fit well or flatter (with some happy exceptions like the gay section of men's clothing). I bought an item from there that was white with beautiful hummingbirds all over that was prettier than any of the women's shorts and it was knee length as well and had great pockets. I wonder if part of this is context too. My bathing suit is long sleeve full coverage on top but I wear full coverage swimming briefs...are you guys uncomfortable at the beach and what could be done to help with that? I mean wet suits are OK if it is not too hot but swimsuits with long skirts are horrible to swim in and actually some of the modest swim suits billow in and out under the water. Are there times when tighter can be better? I agree with modesty and am not trying to make this hard but I am active and always have been and some activities are fine in dresses (maybe not ankle length though these are fine for walking but not climbing mountains, riding a bike or doing manual labor of certain types. I used to work for the government in Salmon restoration until I went into missions, teaching and other things. I want to help you guys and also honor Jesus but if I am spending the day worrying about clothes because they are not right for the day then that does not work for me. I do not think I should have to give up biking, swimming and the like. I agree that modest dresses are awesome but am wondering if there are some solutions out there than can work. I know women have done farming in long dresses but I do not think it is practical to wear long dresses in the snow where it is snowy for almost 4-5 months of the year. Muddy and wet dresses are worse. I do find sweater dresses that are knee length and wear leggings under them, as many women here do, as we tire of wearing winter pants and unfeminine clothes so often. Suggestions are appreciated. Would it help the men to see that women sometimes have job or exercise responsibilities and we have to be practical? One time I got a dress caught that ripped in my bike chain (my only way to work at the time and work was 7 miles away in the snow (during the winter season) of Colorado near the Rockies). That was not a modest moment for me as it cut that dress in half and nearly caused me to fall off as well.
