I love watching their minds at work with the theories. That they latched on to the conversation Daphne had about seed that quicken's and went down that rabbit hole of a theory. I can't even say anything as most reactors took the words the same way. Also, while I do enjoy this adaptation and felt they did a great job, it does fall short on explaining Daphne's anger (or the Duke's in the following episode). To explain it a bit to anyone curious, he told her he couldn't have kids using her lack of knowledge on sex to his advantage on that lie. Daphne loves kids, she basically raised half her own siblings alongside her mother and has wanted children ever since she can recall. So agreeing to a marriage without children was actually a huge sacrifice for her and that she was willing to give it up to be with the man she loved is meant to be as romantic as it sounds. Only for it all to be revealed that he can have children, he simply does not wish to have them? Oh and that he used her lack of knowledge to his advantage to continue to lie to her about it all. She felt like she was going into a marriage sacrificing one of her biggest wishes and life wants (children) because she loved the man enough to do so, yet it turns out it's not a sacrifice at all? That he can have kids?? Yeah, her anger makes sense. How she goes about getting what she wants on the other hand...well he has every right to be angry with her as well. It's a very messy situation.

You can get married without parents permission at 16 at gretna green, even today. It's basically a car park with some shops.

Pedantic librarian information alert: during this time period, the laws to get married in England required that you “have the banns read” three times (essentially the minister at the grooms church would have to announce the upcoming wedding three times, so a minimum of three weeks) or get special license from the church to marry sooner. The law in Scotland was that any couple could get married by taking the vows before witnesses and signing a certificate. The most convenient place to do this was at a town called Gretna Green because it was the first available place after the border on the safest and best unkept road from London. It was a frequent enough occurrence that the town made quite a business of it over the years.

Gretna Green couldn't be less like Vegas. It was originally just a blacksmiths forge in a little village in Scotland just over the border from England, where they performed marriages for young people who eloped, generally against their families wishes. On the subject of Scotland... Outlander next please? 😊

Even though I didn't know who Lady Whistledown was at this point, I still felt it was obvious that Penelope was the one who revealed Marina's secret. When she went to cry into Eloise's arms (my favorite scene in the whole show, by the way) she was crying because of unrequited love, missing Eloise, and "adult problems", sure, but those stresses were not new. The straw that broke the camel's back, so to speak, was the fact that she had to betray a friend's confidence, putting her family's reputation at risk, to protect someone she loved. And then she went to Eloise to cry because she was the only person that she could trust to just be there for her, since literally everyone else on the planet ignores her.

FYI in English title succession once the child is named the heir it is irrevocable. The doubt must be established before the title is passed. He is Hastings heir blood or not.

I don't think Ms Colson's was implying that the Duke is illegitimate. What she meant was, originally everyone else thought that the Duchess was barren but she thought that maybe the Duke was impotent... That changed when Simon was born. However, in the book, the Duchess got pregnant several times but had five miscarriages and gave birth to 2 stillborn children.

As a french person, let me tell you guys, both their accents were horrendous and impossible to understand. I never get that they always forget about phonetics or provide good french teachers to help them on that.

Daphne’s pissed because Simon lied by omission. She went in to marriage expecting children. There’s a big difference in emotion and reason between someone wanting children and having a partner with infertility, and having a partner who does not want children but is fertile. For example. My partner wants marriage and children. I’m not big on either of those, but I can concede marriage. I love them and am not planning on leaving out 14+ year partnership. But kids is a dealbreaker for me. I do not want children and I made that very clear from the beginning. I also check in periodically with my partner to make sure they’re still at peace with that decision. Because if not having kids is a dealbreaker for them, that’s fair and they have every right to walk away. We all know what we want and also what we need in our relationships and what is negotiable and what isn’t. So if I had lied to my partner - by omission or directly - and allowed them to believe I couldn’t conceive vs the truth of me just not wanting kids - they would be rightfully furious and hurt and so many things. These are important matters in relationships to be clear about. Also, I get Penelope but her keeping those two from marrying really bothered me. Taking into consideration the one period, she could either find someone she liked and married them to help hide her pregnancy out of wedlock, or be cast out of “respectable” society and be homeless. So not really an option there.

I thought that the old duke was not the day too... The house keeper made it sound like that
