This technology is in common use for years on skid steer wheel loaders and agricultural vehicles where comfortable suspension compliance is hardly important.

I can't wait for my grandchildren to see a story about this and they'll think it's a new idea. And it's just a few years away! I have seen them on Bobcats, and I think last year there was a demo of them on a Chevy Bolt. Still not expecting them in my lifetime though. But they people working on this have a life long project to work on.

I drove on a set of airless tires in 1975 fitted to a 1975 Pontiac Grand Prix. They were Uniroyal brand and death-traps above 55 MPH as they had a death-weave you couldn't control. The excuse was the National Speed Limit was 55 MPH and ALWAYS would be according to Carter, so the tires were "safe". I drove on a set of Bridgestone airless tires in 2000 that were death-traps on a rental Buick. I wouldn't take the car. I returned it for a Camry at nearly double the cost. "No-flat tires-the technology of the future that always will be."

@gggg-xv7nb
@gggg-xv7nb 2 жыл бұрын
If you parked in a puddle and the puddle froze overnight, gluing the tire, with its airless channels, in a solid block of ice on the ground. Now that would be a fun problem to solve before your drive to work
@jeice13

@@gggg-xv7nb a fun problem indeed, i was more thinking about if the rubber would be prone to cracking when its gets cold enough or something though considering low temperatures make lots of things brittle

Have you ever seen that "Outback Truckers" show, when they get bogged down on a dirt road in the middle of nowhere they will reduce the air pressure within the tire to increase traction, in order to get out of the hole? I guess that option is out now...... or maybe they just will not buy these?

Spike strips are actually kind of dangerous. In a few years most cars on the road will be able to be remotely controlled. Just needs some laws to catch up with technology. I can already report my car stolen, interface with OnStar and the police, and the car can be shutdown.

Loss of profit aside, there are a few more reasons that they might not become popular. 1. Still not as much damping as a pneumatic tire. 2. Potentially much heavier, and still a lot more rolling resistance. 3. Probably not as good with traction. 4. Can't really handle super high speeds and torque like you'd probably want for, say, a sports car or race car. 5. Does not exactly seem optimized for aerodynamics.
