I'm learning how to draw, and I figured that a good way to do that would be to copy every picture in this book about life drawing from 1952 titled 'Bridgmans complete guide to drawing from life'.
I drew it on my ipad, which can make a timelapse video of your drawings. this is a video of the first half of the book.
Doing this is definitely getting me faster at drawing.

Imagine if this was not time lapse and he was actually going this fast

I think these video's are amazing. As the title says, its a GUIDE to drawing. I'm now copying your drawings, but only from the point of view of trying to understand the structure and methods. I then try the poses from memory in order to understand what I've learnt and not just copied. To take all the time and effort to produce these video's for other people to share is pretty fantastic. Massive thank you x

Thanks carol, that sounds like a great way to study. I should try these exercises again, I’m out of practice. I am going to start streaming some sketching soon, so that might be a good place to try it again.

I've been doing this too! Haha... specifically for some anatomy proportion refreshers. It has been invaluable

Yeah it's fun isn't it. makes me realise how little I really understand about proportions and how things stick together. I found that recording it has helped a lot, because I can watch bits and get a reminder from it. I want to get back into it, I was thinking of copying the book 'figure drawing for all it's worth' by Andrew Loomis.

If this is you "learning how to draw" then you're gonna be pretty good when you've mastered it. Are you kidding me?

It’s going OK I guess, but I should do it more regularly if I want to improve properly. Lately I’ve been trying to get better at seeing colour. I have an instagram if you want to see some later sketches. @Too_friendly

I’ve almost finished his drawing from life book then I’ll be ready for constructive anatomy tbh there’s nothing in that book that I already didn’t know but it was the first time I’d use blocks for the figure as a blueprint.. I’ve really tried to not just copy his lines and copy his drawing in this book instead I tried to draw it the way he teaches like starting with the blocks and not just putting random lines down but just copying his drawings every line has a purpose

Much better to try and draw from life, things around you. Bridgman has stereotyped ways of representing the body. Look at a Boucher, Rubens, or Watteau--did they draw this way? No. How's your drawing now?

It’s not “better” to do one thing or another, it’s what works for you individually. Using Bridgman in addition to other ways of learning might be more efficient, but it really depends on the person. And not everyone wants to make classical paintings.

Dani Hunn It is better. Bridgmans drawings were more like a guide and you’re supposed to apply the concepts into real life

Rubens figures all looked the SAME, more so than here.

@@cliffdariff74 Rubens was a great artist and a painter. Bridgman was just a drawing instructor. Rubens had a definite style but to say that all "his figures look the same" is pretty simple. Google Rubens drawings, and you will see his intense graphic grasp of human form.
