Long sleeves not only have a hard time, becuase players prefer base layers, but also because they don't sell well. Fans wear them in summer (especially national teams, as the tournaments usally are in summer), when you can see them. In winter it's too cold anyways or you can wear a large jersey over a hoodie. Sometimes they are also more costly.

Big fan of long sleeves. Clubs won’t sell ls shirts as most fans want to wear what the players wear. I support Burnley and they cannot afford to stock multiple shirt sizes in ls as they would lose money. Not enough people want ls shirts and clubs would lose money. I personally prefer short sleeve kits. I bought 2 long sleeve kits and always regretted that because they weren't as easy to wear depending on the weather. I run pretty hot, though, so maybe that's part of it.

We've gone through exactly the same thing in Rugby. Baggy long-sleeved cotton jerseys were incredibly impracticable and heavy in the wet but iconic and flattering on everyone. They even became a fashion staple thanks to the likes of Any Warhol wearing them. Then Adidas started kitting out the All Blacks and lighter weight short sleeves became the standard until England and France wore skin-tight Nike kits in the 2003 World Cup and it was game over for anything else. Kits between 2005-2011 looked like they were spray-on, which is fine for the professionals (except Andy Goode) but looked awful on Barry the Plumber who turned up at his club on Saturday after a drinking session Friday. Eventually, manufacturers started incorporating traditional features like fold-over collars but I still go for the cotton replicas when I can.

I'm a fan of long sleeve jerseys since Beckham wearing England one for 2006 World Cup and I bought some since then, including 16-17 Real Madrid. I can understand players not wanting to wear long sleeve jerseys for comfort (or fashion, whatever they like), but clubs not selling these jerseys is definitely a bad decision.

I live in a hot country but have a lot of long sleeve football shirts. They look better, sometimes with added features and have good cuffs on them too. Something that short sleeve often don't have. They were a very 90s thing but we've seen them more in the last five years I think. I thought they were dying out but they should stay (mostly) alive for the foreseeable future. Just think fans prefer the comfort of short sleeve when they don't have to watch games with jackets on or so forth. Though I find them comfy, not a lot of people do it seems.

Arsenal had this long tradition where if the captain chose to wear a long sleeve shirt then the whole team wore long sleeve shirts to follow suit, it was a pretty cool look until that tradition died in 2016 or so? Also was devastated when Adidas stopped producing long sleeve shirts for Scotland after the 2013 release, some bs about not being commercially viable even though they had absolute stunning shirts in long sleeve, check out the 2011-13 Scotland home shirt from Adidas in long sleeve in particular its sublime!

While I normally prefer short sleeve and have worn nothing but short sleeves pretty much since I started playing the game as a 10 year old. Think the decline of long sleeves mostly is due to lack of sales,not viable to wear in the summer especially if you’re wearing casually and the design these days being quite tight fitting. While there are big names like Sergio Ramos,Cristiano Ronaldo and Antoine Griezmann but it’s even rare now given base layers are the trend sure we had Garnacho,Rashford,Sane,Hojlund and Havertz but then even they would sometimes switch to a base layer
