What a lucky sheep, to have been rescued, sheared, and checked over by a vet. But mostly she was lucky to have been rescued by the bravest, best humored, kindest men on the planet. I think she was so calm on the way up the cliff because she knew she was is good hands. Well done, lads!!

She won't be though. She'll be a circus. The activists who spent time getting to know her were bared from the land under false pretences and while they were gone, the farmers swooped in and took the sheep away. The activists wanted to get her out safely and take her to a sanctuary where she would be safe and allowed to live her life away from the public eye.
@naomimcewan9744
@naomimcewan9744 9 ай бұрын
@saa6673 the farmers had been in contact with the owner since the news first broke about her being there in a local news paper and had already arranged with him to rescue her. I think there was some misunderstanding on the owners part with him believing the activists were part of the team he had been talking to and once he realised he decided to allow the original team to rescue her as arranged. She won't be a circus, she'll be reintegrated with other sheep and put out in the pastures to live out her life and cared for. The farm is closed to the public for the next 5 months and by the time it reopens in the spring she will be out living her best life with her own small flock. The animals that are inside in pens are in large pens with deep beds, behind barriers and feed troughs to stop the public from being hands on, there are also signs all over the park asking the public NOT to try and pet the animals. The sanctuary that the activists wanted her to go to hold meet and greets for adults and children where they can pet on and hand feed the animals and have overnight stays on the grounds right next to the paddocks.

Why didn't "the activists who spent time getting to know to know her" ever do her the favor of a good shear to remove the massive weight and tangling hazard that was the biggest threat to her life, safety, and comfort? She now will be looked after properly with others of her own kind for company thanks to these guys, not anyone else who had two and a half years to rescue her and didn't get it done. Activists who cared about her would be happy that she is in a safer place doing well, and wouldn't be out there terrorizing the farmer and the animals on the farm.@@saa6673

@jennypratt5345
@jennypratt5345 9 ай бұрын
Well, Cammy is a very experienced shearer, so it would be natural for him to do the job properly. He deliberately chose to use hand shears because it's easier to leave a slightly longer fleece with them, it is less likely to cut the sheep if she struggles a lot (and he couldn't be sure that she would stay calm) and they are much more quiet and less likely to alarm. She'll be kept indoors until she gets used to her surroundings, and fleece grows all the year round, so by the time she goes out into a paddock she'll have a little more covering.

I hope her remaining years are happy. I for one am glad she was rescued. I know so many people say to leave animals alone and I agree: but in her case she was not in a normal situation. Mammals are for the most part social beings.
@jennypratt5345
@jennypratt5345 9 ай бұрын
Her case was normal to the extent that sheep do wander into odd places entirely of their own volition and sometimes they can't get back; in this instance getting her back really wasn't something which could be easily tackled. The video made it look relatively simple but both Cammy and Graeme have admitted that there were moments when they thought they had bitten off more than they could handle. There are also some breeds of sheep which don't flock together but spread out widely and generations of ewes will live in the same small area one after another. This is because they live in areas where feed is sparse and grazing as a flock is not viable. They are known as "hefted" sheep and will always return to the same area after being gathered (for example for shearing). They are mostly found (in the UK) in the Lake District, the Scottish Highlands and some islands, like Shetland. Should the farm be sold, the sheep are generally sold with it because they cannot be uprooted. Before anyone shouts, that's a very brief precis of hefted sheep, not a detailed analysis - this is not the place for one but there are books which explain the phenomenon in detail.

Fiona was named because of a famous sheep called Shrek. He was rescued in New Zealand 2004 and featured on the the Bondi Vet show. Shrek’s fleece weighed 27kg/59.5lbs. Shriek is the most famous, but Chris, a Canberran ram found in Canberra, Australia 2005 holds the record of sheared fleece at 41kg/90.3lbs. He likely had only weeks to live due to his wool. Other rescued fleece weights: Shaun, 2014 Merino ram Tasmania 23.5kg/51.8lbs fleece. Big Ben, 2014 Merino ewe New Zealand 28.9kg/63.7lbs fleece. Sheila, ewe 2015 Tasmania 21.8kg/50.3lbs fleece. Ewenice, ewe 2020 found in Victoria, Australia 20kg/44lbs fleece. Baarack, Merino ram 2021 Victoria, Australia 35kg/77lbs fleece. Shrekapo, Merino sheep 2022 from New Zealand with 18kg almost 40lbs of fleece. Alex, 2022 Victoria, Australia produced a 40kg/88lbs fleece.

Sheep really don't differentiate between people in that sort of way. They kept her calm by getting hold of her swiftly and firmly (no faffing about) and then enclosing her in a confined space. They knew to do this because they were all experienced handlers of livestock. Pretty much any animal will stop struggling when in a very small space.

@@thecourtlyalchemist The east coast of Scotland north of Inverness doesn't get as warm as many other parts of the UK - and where she was living there would have been a near constant on-shore breeze to keep her cool. @jennypratt5345

Farm animals don't lift their heads from grazing when the RAF are low-flying over them. Unless the drones are actually buzzing around their ears they are unlikely to pay much attention, probably none after the first five minutes. Animals which are normally preyed upon by birds are most likely to fear things moving overhead... and that doesn't apply to farm animals in any significant way; though eagles - Golden and White-tailed - do take a few lambs in the Highlands. The first time the wind turbines start up the sheep run away, by the end of a week they are grazing right up to the base of the towers.

She is not the loneliest sheep in the world she is the luckiest sheep in the world. All these people fully risked their lives to rescue Fiona when no one else like animal rescue etc would step in because they said it was too dangerous and too big a risk, that human life outweighed Fiona’s life. I don’t know where else you can find the video of the rescue but it is definitely on The Hoof GP’s KZfaq page.

An average UK fleece weighs between 1 and 3kgs though, so it was a lot more than that. But she's a young sheep, an older ewe would probably have had a heavier fleece.

No need to exploit innocent beings when we don't need wool anymore. I volunteer at a Sanctuary and the sheep are gently sheared over days so they are not stressed. The wool is put in the forest for the wild animals to use for their nests.❤

So the sheep are handled many times instead of once and done....lots of serious stress there. As for putting the wool in the forest....not bright. Wool by its nature can become tangled hard around legs, necks, and toes. Ive had to free domeztic poultry hete more than once when they got into larger clumps of wool and bevamd entangled.

What a ridiculous comment! She spent two years "perfectly happy" on her own? Just how do you know that she was "perfectly happy"? As a herd animal, I doubt very much that she was "perfectly happy" or in any way content. Just how happy would you be? And you're not even a herd animal! Yes, a social animal, and what does that mean? You should be more careful about what words you allow to leave your mouth. That has to be one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard a "news person" say. Ridiculous. If she was so happy, why did she need to be rescued? Because shes is a HERD ANIMAL! And they are NOT HAPPY on their own! She would NEVER feel safe! How would you like to find yourself in such a position?
