I was working at a showroom in the Reno area where he appeared. I was given the task (honor) of picking him up at the airport. I was told he'd be flying in from LA. I went to the airport but saw no flights coming in from LA. I called the entertainment director. He laughed and informed me that Roy flies his own plane. That was a surprise. I drove to the other side of the airport and picked him up at his Aero Commander. I was a fan of aviation and the local Reno Air Races. I asked if he knew of Bob Hoover a former test pilot and Air Race regular who flew an Aero Commander as if it were a much smaller aircraft. Roy did know of him and we enjoyed talking about planes for the ride to the hotel. He performed Malaguena twice nightly for a week (about 20' from my positon on Stage Left). Always impressive! Very talenten, friendly, funny, and outgoing fellow! Glad to see him being appreciated.

Roy was on the Johnny Carson Tonight Show one night and played a piece with that show’s big band which was directed by Doc Severinson. Doc started the song with a faster tempo than Roy expected but Roy kept up. He tried to signal Doc with facial expressions but to no avail. Then Roy’s first string broke during some really fast single string picking. Roy just moved up the neck of the guitar and played the rest of the song - without missing a lick!

I of course will never forget the summer day in 1970 when I was in my barracks playing a Roy Clark instrumental album, I particularly liked "Caravan" and I looked out my window and there he was, Roy Clark coming to our Armed Forces affiliate which was in the basement as I remember it of our barracks. He was there to do an interview. He was touring up in Alaska at that time. I ran down two flights of stairs to see him closer and tell him what a fan I was. He was very nice and shook my hand and invited me to view his interview. One of the songs he played was "Malaguena". I was thrilled to say the least. I was too young at the time to go to see his performances in Anchorage, and didn't have the rank to go to our NCO club at Elmendorf AFB where he performed one night during his tour.

When people think of great guitarists, there is a bias toward rock. It's nice too see someone (not surprisingly a musician) who can see outside of rock, who has an appreciation for different genres of music and the musicians who play. That's why when people ask me who I think the greatest guitarist is of all time, I tell them there is no way to answer that question without bias as you would have to look across multiple genres/styles of music. Roy Clark is an example of a highly talented musician who stands among the greats. Excellent video.

The good news is the young players have videos to learn from Roy . Roy grew up with live shows in Music Halls or Counrty fairs with a hay wagon as the stage. In 1946 the census showed that the US homes had just 6000 TV's but by 1952 there were 22 million. The 1 3/4" APEX video tape was invented in about 1954 and used in 1956 for a 3 minute pre-recorded song done on a TV show as a test to make it appear as a live guest . Most of the players now passing away in their 80's had pure talent and skill to spend hours perfecting the picking and trying to play what they heard. Back in the mid 1960's Roy said that when he was to record 5 songs they gave him the records and listen to and convert to his guitar . But he had just 2 days to learn them and then do all 5 in one take at the studio on day 3 .

Not just the younger generation. I’m 62. My father loved HeeHaw and, being a real C&W type guy, watched it every week. I grew up in Texas, too, btw. Needless to say, almost all of my family was country. Anyway, while I loved rock guitar ( It was Led Zep, Yes, Jethro Tull etc... for me) I neither acknowledged or respected the country guys. I knew there were some good players but I hated the music so much I never could listen to them long enough to really admire their skills. My taste in music has expanded so much since then. Having learned to play a little bit myself has helped a lot. Videos like this now fascinate me. I love learning about the intricacies of music.

Thank you for covering Roy Clark ,my grandfather met Roy in 1951 I think it was in while they were both trying to make it ,he said after one session with Roy he came home and told everyone to just forget trying to be a professional guitarist because he met Roy Clark and no one will ever match his skills ,he said that Roy made great players sound average at best with ease . As my grandfather got older he never missed a Roy Clark on heehaw performance, to him Roy was the brightest star no matter the guest! My apologies for being so long .

He also learned the Piano from his Mother and started on the Trumpet but traded it in for the Mandoline . In the episode of the Beverley Hillbillies Roy knew the Clampets and headed over to see them , Granny always fueded with Roy Mother where he played her during the phone calls back home . Roy was acting more like the Johnathon Winters Maudy Fricker old lady and at the end he's supposed to be drunk and plays the Trumpet badly and then stumble to the piano .

He, Glen Campbell and Leon Rhodes had similar backgrounds. Leon left the Ernest Tubb band in 1967 but later was recruited by Roy for the Hee Haw band . Rhodes almost die at about 8 years old from a Kidney disease while in the Texas Hospital for 7 weeks. He had said that he saw Jesus in his room tha tassured him he would die . Doctor couldn't believe that his Kidney were perfect and he was normal to be discharged. But, he had a love for music and wanted to play the guitar and didn't go back to school for grade 3 . Here he is with Jimmy Dean playing 12th Street Rag but gets stopped to put a glove on . kzfaq.info/get/bejne/brV1lbVq3NeYiY0.html Leon was missing the marketing values as a Host whic Roy and Glen were good at ....but Leon was respected by Roy for his playing skills because he never learn to read music and played by ear to copy parts from other skilled pickers. Check out his Honey Fingers that doesn't look impressive but his fingers and right hand are in perfect sync .

In 1969-70 , Hee Haw and the Glen Campbell show were tied in the rating at around 20 points each . Roy laughed at how New York Execs spend huge amounts on their TV shows and yet a show with a Chicken a pig and guitar players shot up to the Number 1 spot in the ratings by the 3rd week on air and stayed there . It was a national Show by CBS. Suddenly celebrities wanted to be on Hee Haw for national exposure . Roy mentioned that he remembered the time that Elvis asked if he could be on Hee Haw . I caught the show out of Buffalo on the UHV channel that had a strong signal into canada .

A great musician, humble man and all around likable guy. What a treasure he was. So many could learn from him. Thanks for more Roy, you Rock. And by the way I love how the camera can't keep up with his strumming.

That's the thing that got me soon as he got into it.......he's pickin he's strummin got the base thing goin on....it's all at the same frickin time!!!!! to watch and hear this is nuts......I know he's one of the greatest ever and I'm just a schlep...but it's still frickin crazy unbelievably INSANE!!!!And the atomic icing on the cake is IT'S A FRICKIN 12 STRING!!!!One tiny deviation of your finger or nail and PWANG....admittedly I've not got the most trained ear bit I didn't hear anything off.....if one hadn't seen and heard it......you wouldn't believe it to be real.

He did do a different version than the 6 string which had the center opening for a rich sound. I heard him silence a couple of strings with a finger to stop the sound that wouldn't be hidden among the 6 string nosie . Glen Campbell has the same type of guitar with the opening at the upper front which i think gives the guitar a defining Twang sound which might be why Roy touch the 2 string to deaden them . I don't see anyone today on AGT that comes close to Roy of Glen Campbell to do so much with a high skill level and be the Host for his own show . You need more that Opera or a Puppet to fill a 1 Hour show in Vegas and be different in 7 show for each day of the week.

I had the pleasure of attending one of Roy's concerts in the early '90s. Malagueña was one of the highlights. All the musicians in his band were top-notch as well. It was a fabulous evening.

One thing you don't see here (Though you hit on it in your excellent analysis) is his ability to play flawlessly while catching the eyes of everyone in the audience --He was just totally concentrating on this performance. When he was being filmed he looked right into the camera. I'll let him explain...""The camera was very kind to me, and I consider myself to be a television baby," Clark said in 2009. "At first, it wasn't that I was so talented, but they had to fill time. ... So they'd say, 'Well, let's get the kid.' Later, I got to where when I looked at the camera, I didn't see a mechanical device. I saw a person." It knocks me out that you have such wonderful perception this early in your life, Fil...

I used to go see Roy at fairs and festivals in Southern Virginia in the 70's as well as people like Jerry Reed (another fantastic and under-rated player). I feel very fortunate for that. This was one of his "signature songs" even though he didn't write it, his version is way up there. You must really like him after the vids you've done on him and he was just fantastic. Don't forget to do more FZ! So much to see there and just simply the guy had it all from composing - even writing songs to accent a particular player's talents, band leadership, business and while his guitar playing is under-rated, is not only unique, but in my view it is beyond comparison. Thanks again for this one, very much enjoyed.

Because of his comedic side, i don't think people realized how great of a guitarist Roy was. I live only a few miles from where he grew up. He even built a new wing to our hospital. He was a great entertainer as well as a great human being. He also played about every other stringed instrument and i think he played horns too.

The craziest part is his hand moves so fast that you can HEAR him hitting a bass line but you can't SEE him do it. Almost like those strums come from somewhere else. Just incredible.
