Our very first night here we were in an airbnb back in 2020. It was the beginning of the months of rain that year. We woke up in the middle of the night to 3 inches of water throughout the entire house. It was a rough start, but we made it.

Hey Cartess, people who never traveled see the “rustic” look of some parts of Mexico and equate that with crime. That’s the narrative in the states. When I was in Merida for a month my friend lives in Juan Pablo and we walked. The friendliest people ever! Everyone we passed said “Buenas!” They don’t waste tax dollars on massive projects repairing unnecessary sidewalks. If the neighbors want it, they can do it. Different mindset. Mexico looks just like lots of the world…but safe, kind and friendly people!
@MoveAbroadandThrive

Amen!!! Juan Pablo is gorgeous to me. I love it. Like you said, super friendly people over there. Our favorite spot for burritos is over there and we're there quite often. But you're right; that rustic look have folks thinking it's bad -- but the complete opposite.

@@nakho3550 In a lot places, especially in Merida, the home owners are responsible for the sidewalk repairs in front of their homes. With that quick snippy attitude, for you it will be like Cartess says, "No. You're not gonna make it in Mexico" Buena suerte con eso!

Let's be honest, Cartess, most Americans will not adjust. They don't want to make the effort to learn the language nor a new culture, and as you know, Mexico is very different. One of the reasons why they like Portugal is because many people speak English and they just hang around other Americans. That will wear off one day. I'm glad you decided to stay in Mexico because it is a wonderful country. The people, the food and the weather. I can't wait to move to Mexico. I know I will be happier. I'm happy in the US, but I love Mexico so much more. Cartess, take easy on the queen. Lol

She takes about three years to know if the place is a perfect fit because just two weeks ago it was a heatwave and if someone came then they would think that that is normal. A place can give you a false perception good or bad. One thing I know for sure you know where you left and you know it was a serious reason for leaving I'll be damned if I go back to where I come from.🌄🦍❤️

Thank for sharing. I moved from Miami in 2021, these neighborhoods remind me of some of the neighborhoods their. It's about the quality and what you make. Great video bro! Love you and your family! I am coming there very soon! I am officially retiring in September at 62, and trying to get my wife to retire, too. She was born and raised there, but in the far north park of Mexico. We just left Chicago after 30 years and moved on the border of IL\IND. However, in Chicago - to prepare me for the move, we moved to Pilsen, an 85% Mexican hood, where I picked up Spanglish. LOL. Looking forward to me of your videos and I want to start a business there and a non-profit, just like I have here. We are looking to rent a home for under $1500 USD per month. I also want to find a fixer-upper to rehab myself, to rent and pass on to her family in Mexico. We got TWO of them through college - first in their family!!!! I hope I can find a BBQ joint. If not, I may have to create one. LOL. Yep, I also love Salsa, but I will start a Blues, Jazz and other music band if necessary, too.

One of the most honest and direct to the point videos on KZfaq that I have seen. It is wonderful seeing your entire family having made that move. Having an open mind and knowing your whys is so very important. Trying to see Mexico through the lenses of American culture, landscape, etc is doing an injustice to ones self. I moved in February of this year (Jalisco), spent a total of about six months here last year...and no regrets! Taking Spanish classes as we speak. I intentionally go into the community market place and strike up conversations (with my mistakes and all). I subscribed to your channel. Keep the realness affect.

@@MoveAbroadandThrive we did that two years ago and it was great! Didn’t feel unsafe, we traveled by bus and plane was only from Puerto Vallarta to Merida and Merida to Oaxaca. Great experiences! Mexico is very different in every state. Even the foods are different. One things for sure, when you leave and move abroad, it’ll reveal to you all your flaws and weaknesses! It’ll force you to change however some people cower back to the states. They don’t like what they see and instead of fixing it they rather go back to being comfortably asleep. There will be struggles adjusting to a new place and like the US you will have financial struggles at times, that’s life! The keys are discipline and commitment! Just like in a relationship. Everything you e said in this video is telling of the types of relationships people have with others and how they value them. That may be a bit too deep but I understood. It all comes with moving abroad because most if not all of these other countries are community based and we are not anymore. We us older ones are or know, but the younger generation don’t know.

I think you've gotten used to the heat that's why it's not a thing anymore. Your body will adjust! Has the misses adjust, yet? Now that you have your translators when are you hitting the road to explore the rest of Mexico?

Wife hasn't adjusted yet, she spends most of her days inside... I think we might start hitting the road to explore the rest of Mexico pretty soon. Got a planned visit to Mexico City in August. May leave there and explore Queretaro for a few weeks to share other options. Queretaro is super nice and similar to Merida without the heat (and no beach)

It’s the honest fun-family moment for me. “You don’t know how to drive.”😂😂😂. Now Cartess, on the flip side, I will say it’s not your job to ring sirens for adults who choose to pick up and come. Yes, you may have a channel focusing on living abroad, but these folks can’t place on others when making giant leaps. What about people who moved abroad before KZfaq with no guidance or platforms to look to? They moved on a prayer and two clenched butt cheeks and made it work. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I'll go out on a limb and say it was probably far worse for folks pre-internet. Absolutely nothing to prepare them for that lifestyle/culture change. The amount of overwhelm was probably unbearable for those. If the majority are returning back with access to all of the information of the Internet, I can't imagine what it was life for those folk. Statistics show most are back home very quickly.

@@MoveAbroadandThrive exactly. But they pushed and set up shops. You got Italians who came to NYC with $200. Yes, the travel back home was barely an option given the distance and lacks of funds, so they closed their eyes, came, and made it work. We gotta do the same. I think we take the distance and our dollar strength for granted and give up. Keep preaching the “know your why” Cartess!!!👏🏽👏🏽 I understand their pain but come now. What made them leave America in the 1st place! Thank God they have you to ring em back in 😂

@belltowndaisy I would like to know where you got this number from? Does Merida have a Registry for Expats? Remove your fake number here. Based on what I can see, Merida have way more Expats than your fake number. We had a dinner, and there were more than 300 people in this dinner. That doesn't count all the ones who didn't show up. I am sure the number is in the thousands

"Merida has a population of about 1.2 million, including approximately 11,000 expats. The city is popular among both snowbirds and full-time expats. Many foreigners opt to winter in Merida and travel back home to visit loved ones during the summer months when the weather becomes scorching." --Some other government websites suggest between 10,000-15,000 but the following site tends to have accurate info as well: SOURCE: mexicorelocationguide.com/living-in-merida-on-1500-a-month/#:~:text=Merida%20has%20a%20population%20of,when%20the%20weather%20becomes%20scorching.
