Buckfast is that cousin that seems nice and you take out with your mates for the evening but he then proceeds to hit on everyone’s girls, start fights with massive blokes, gets you barred from your local and wakes up in the jail in a pool of blood, puke and piss.

This stuff has given me some really quite spectacularly bad hangovers, the couple of times I've subjected myself to two bottles in one evening have resulted in doing crazy shit I have zero recollection of, on one occasion being arrested and locked up wearing an eclectic outfit I'd obtained from the local cloths bank. Vodka and Red-bull has much the same effect on me, though the after effects are slightly less horrendous, done some really retarded stuff on that concoction as well. Though as I say if you want to not remember anything and like the idea of spending 48 hours feeling like you have full blown AIDS then this is the drink for you.

Been working in the wine and spirits business for a decade. Love a good red, a nice IPA, a good irish whiskey...but nothing beats a wee drop of bucky to get the night started. Lovely stuff. 1000/10

Had my 30th birthday party last weekend and a friend bought me a bottle as a novelty present! Hadn't had it in years! Went down a treat, forgot how nice (or smashable 😂) it was!

Me and my mates used to drink this for our hair of the dog drink! Half way through the bottle and we were always ready to get back on it. lovely tipple 10/10. Not brewed in Buckfast Abbey by monks anymore and hasn't been for years but still worth a visit to the abbey as its cheaper to buy it there as opposed to local shops

Visited Buckfast Abbey a few times as a child. Loved the place, lovely area and great atmosphere. Tried it then with parents and really liked it, haven't had it since, but now tempted 😉

Went to Buckfast Abbey with my Nan, many moons ago. Strong stuff and loved by the Scottish apparently !

Got introduced to this with my dad being from Glasgow, this drink causes so many problems in Glasgow, loopy juice is the nickname for this up there, drinking this at room temperature ain’t the norm, they put it in the freezer for 20/30 mins before drinking it! Goes down so easy that way!! Wish you would of drunk the full bottle would of been funny to see how you would of took it 😂 great review as always Simon 👍

This is my favourite review ever 10/10.I’m with you wine is foul and especially monk hooligans juice.It’s like a monk approved supercharged barnstormer lambrini style concoction of doom.

Half ashamed to say I love this stuff. Gives you that warm fuzzy feeling fairly quickly but I tend to wake up with an upset stomach the next day lol!

Fun fact - you can crack the bottom of the bottle with your elbow as there's a lining on the base you'll notice bubbles rise from the bottom after you hear the crack, also always better consumed from the bottle. Fun fact 2: in Scotland we called this liquid speed.

Spot on review Simon. Yep it's the scourge of the West of Scotland. JC Chandler actually donate a fair amount of cash to communities here which I think tells you they know the damage it does. The alcohol content and the caffeine is a lethal combination and gets people absolutely off their nut.

Red wine should be served and drank between 12 and 18 degrees C, so a little colder than room temperature. When people refer to room temperature for wine the room they mean is the wine cellar. Hence why we have wine coolers.

I vaguely remember, back in the 80s, reading an article about a fact-finding visit by the abbot of Buckfast Abbey to the infamous Buckfast Triangle in central Scotland; he expressed his shock that people were not using the wine for 'tonic purposes'. 😐

My spinster aunts (6 in number) all lived in a very large house used to drink this for "health reasons" every evening. Sent me down to the cellar to fetch a bottle, cases of the stuff. Also Sanatogen and Wincarnis both similar to Buckfast I swear the all got squiffy, but all lived well into their 80s.

As a Scottish guy of a certain vintage I can happily say I've never tasted the Tonic. I am aware that certain pubs have this 'wine' on tap
