Great video, we started using buckwheat a few years ago. We crimp or roll over our winter wheat before the heads mature, broadcast the Buckwheat right over that. Pretty impressive. Deer love it

You don’t need a crimper! Broadcast your seed into it and then mow it. You will be good to go

Just planted my buckwheat yesterday here in WI. Couldn’t agree more on the farmers (bless them) being stuck in their ways. There’s a guy that irrigates his corn field near me during the hottest time of the day. 2 pm and 95° out and he’s irrigating with overhead sprinklers and all its doing is evaporating before the droplets can reach the soil. Another farmer whose land I hunt planted winter wheat last October and deer were pounding it in November. Some of them listen, some of them don’t. PSA: water plants, trees and crops at night if possible. Less evaporation = better results.

Planted buckwheat 1st week of june in southeast Mn. Broadcast into rye grain planted last labor day. Ran over rye with a roller/crimper I built last winter in my shop, My issue is buckwheat is spotty and inconsistent, dreading that when I broadcast the fall food plot seed into what is there for buckwheat and crimping that I will have to use chemicals to help terminate buckwheat...any suggestions?

Thanks to you I’ve got my first buck wheat crop well under way. Definitely the easiest crop I’ve grown. I’ve heard you say let it go for 45 days or so, but is there a particular flower stage you should look out for, before you disk it back in? I’ve heard that if you let it go too far, it will re-seed. Thanks in advance.
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
That’s great. Yes it will reseed around the 70-80 day mark. Once the white flowers develop around 60-65 days there will be about another 10 days before seed. Terminate and plant your fall plot before the seeds. You can simply terminate by discing in/mowing and discing in.

So when would I plant Buckwheat? I'm in south central Arkansas.
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors

Ideally about 70 days before you want to plant your fall food plots. But you can plant anywhere between 40-50 days before planting fall plots to get some benefits and enough bio mass.

Do you kill old vegetation off with gly before planting? Weeds always seem to take over my plot.
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
On first time plots yes. Once the Initial kill with gly and 2-4D I’ll go ahead and disc and plant whatever I’m planting for the spring/summer. I take the spring/summer plot and disc that in around august 15th and plant my Fall crop of brassicas and winter wheat and maybe some annual clovers. In the spring that wheat is the first thing to green up and it greens up way before any weeds could start. Over that time it should shade out and prevent 90 percent of any weed growth. Then I mow my wheat disc and plant my buck wheat. Key is to have something green and growing in plot for as long as possibly. Another key point is to is to make sure your PH is above a 6.5 weeds thrive in acidic soil.

One year on a 1/4 acre cover crop of Buckwheat I was broadcasting just b4 I terminated. I had just 3 weeds in it. Not far away I had another area infested with weeds. Buckwheat helps the soil for the future & cuts down on a lot of time money & work u would have to do. It crimps & covers seeds very nicely & I think it's easier to broadcast evenly in. I've had awesome kale, turnip & forage radishes along with trophy brassicas after a Buckwheat crop ended. Never had a volunteer crop of it but I have volunteer turnips right now in MN. The kale & radishes were overseeded & now the turnips r growing in a place that should be brown. It's even has the attention of some moles.😮

The deer are eating my new sprouts of Buckwheat, how long will the deer eat it? Is Buckwheat a good source of food for deer even after it flowers, or only when it’s a young plant?
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
Typically they won’t eat it until it actually flowers from what I’ve seen typically because it’s not 100 percent a preferred food source at this time of year with all the natural browse growing. There are times where I’ve seen them eat it while young. Especially if you have a lot of deer. In that case you can spread milorgnite and that will repel the deer for 3-4 weeks in order for it to get established.

Hard to say. Doesn’t take much. If you get some at planting to get it to take off and some showers here and there you should be good it’s pretty drought tolerant.

Does buckwheat require much fertilizer? What's you're protocol for planting buckwheat in may or June? Do you fertilze it just as much as you would if it were a fall planting?
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
Buckwheat doesn’t need much. Not as much as other crops. I always fertilize according to soil samples. Whether the poundage is per acre I cut it in half because I come back in and foliar feed with micros and NPK. That way you save on the front end. My protocol is I mow the winter wheat and disc it in and I fertilize and plant my buck wheat. If it was a brand new plot I would spy gly and 2-4D wait 2 weeks disc and plant buck wheat. Lime and fertilize according to samples.
