Budget Thermal Monocular vs Digital Night Vision

Testing the AGM ASP Micro TM-160, a short range handheld thermal monocular. The TM160 is probably the cheapest standalone thermal imager on the market, retailing for about $400. That makes it even cheaper than digital night vision like the SiOnyx Aurora.
It has some interesting applications for hunting, and surveillance/static observation. And night time peeing.

Static observation is exactly what this is for. A friend and I were discussing night vision vs thermal. Two advantages to thermal that I could think of right away. One, it works in the day time. If somebody or some animal was hiding in the brush, you could still see their heat signature. Night vision wouldn't see anything. Two, somebody with night vision who is looking at you, doesn't have a big IR illuminator (in the middle of your face) to aim at. Thermal devices give off no IR signature.
@tylersingleton9284
@tylersingleton9284 3 жыл бұрын
Remote IR floodlights are great for keeping your position a secret from NV users, and thermal blankets can shield you from thermal users. It's crazy how many people dont think of their illuminator as a target for opponents.

@tylersingleton9284 3 жыл бұрын
@ that is good to know about the blanket. Mabey a spray painted thermal blanket with silver on the inside would work better. Or maybe if you are using a thermal setup, using a IR and regular strobe light would be plenty to disrupt things to the point where it wouldn't matter.

I have one. I think it's pretty neat. I've tried walking around at night with it. It's pretty hard. The best use case is probably varmint hunting at night where you use the thermal to locate the varmint, and then use a spot light or weapon light to take the shot, and positively ID the animal, if it was too far to ID with the thermal. Another use case that has occurred to me, but that I haven't tried yet, is for tracking animals that have been shot, but maybe didn't drop right away. It seems that it should make find a blood trail at night much easier. One limiting factor to thermals that I think is worth mentioning is that they can't see through glass.
@DevDog67
@DevDog67 3 жыл бұрын
As long as you're tracking soon after the shot I bet it would work very well for that. I'm not sure how long it takes blood a blood trail's splatter/drops to loose heat. But if it's within a few minutes I'm sure it would show up well.
@erfarmer65
@erfarmer65 2 жыл бұрын
not useful at all for tracking blood - I have 3 different high end thermals and while I can see blood immediately after shooting an animal - once it hits the ground it cools so fast to ambient temp that it's no longer useful - however, I have successfully used even the cheapest thermal devices countless times to recover the animal by simply walking and scanning for the heat signature of the downed animal in the direction they ran. I have easily found them 50-75 yards in pitch darkness and often in thick brush since the body temp remains above ambient for hours... even after I looked in the same area with high end spotlighting equipment and infrared - the thermal is hands down the best for these scenarios. Even seeing a warm "blob" a 100 yards away indicates that it's "something" there.

A really useful thing to use budget thermal stuff for is to look at your electrical wiring in your home for hot spots. Sometimes in older homes your outlet could be getting too hot due to a poor connection or corrosion on the contacts, lets you see if there is a brewing issue before it becomes a fire hazard. Also, quite useful in chasing down pluming leaks if you have one.

@@jamesfrancisaloysiuspercev925 Not really. Civilian thermals are all long-wave IR sensors which is like 7000-14000nm. IR lights for NV use are in the 850-1000nm range. If you are seeing someone's IR light "at the source" with a thermal weapon sight or common monocular, you aren't seeing the light it produces, you're seeing the heat generated inside the device. That's why you can only see it at the source.

I had use such devices when protected Kyiv from russians. Because we had no other devices. You cannot walk with thermals, especially in forest. Always someone had to hold a man with thermal and lead him. But, in tranches thermals work well. Some times it detects glass as warm objects. In some conditions we couldn't recognise real distance to object. So, i think that better to have both termal and night vision.

I have a pretty solid PVS14, and use it to aim my weapon, but the thermal would be very good for detecting animals in the woodline easily, for better scrutiny under i2. I don't plan to PID with thermal, just "alert". Further, I'd like to use it to trace thermal leaks in my house during this winter. *Pair with as in use together on a lanyard or something, not HMT it along side my 14.

You know, you have a specific use case for night vision devices, and don't see the benefit to other people. This thermal device, to me, seems ideal for checking the dark areas of my large yard at night for animals or miscreants. And as far as the mode with the colors in it, it's handy for differentiating between temperatures for diagnosing component issues in electronics. It's easier for people to discern differences in color than shades of grey. As far as your use case goes, though, you seem spot on.

locating a fresh carcass in thick brush would be a good use for one of these. you can see alot from 20 ft up a tree, but once your on the ground you can walk right past a dead deer. If you lung shot one they don't leave much blood, or if you shoot one in the rain, it can wash away the blood. if the animal runs through standing water, even if it's only an inch deep, they won't leave a blood trail. Over the years i've had 3 deer that i haven't recovered. All 3 were due to weather preventing or washing out a blood trail. 2 were bucks that i found the blood, but it was washed away/covered before i could fully track the deer. neither was a perfect hit, one was paunch shot, and the other was a lung hit. The third was a doe, and she ran through a wetland area that had about 2 inches of water standing everywhere, so there was no blood trail at all. I spent hours looking for all of them. we did eventually find the doe, but it was several weeks later.

This *is* Sightmark tier sh!t. The point being, for a huge swath of real world users, Sightmark tier sh!t performs a useful, if limited, function.

Use case scenario: Helmet mount is out of the question, but what about mounting it to a paintball gun as a cheap thermal scope? - does it see IR Lasers? I'm thinking no by the video but I couldn't tell

so, I'm not a hunter but am an avid wildlife photographer, there are some dense forests not far from me where I know there are owls... but when I go looking for them, not at night, but during the daytime... the trees are sooooo dense that the sunlight doesn't even come through. I'm trying to find a device to help me spot birds, especially owls in that scenario I described, will the AGM TM-160 be a good option?

I will agree to disagree on that 1. I have mounted to a bump helmet. and I prefer it over my pvs 14. But I'm also using it for Coyote hunting And if you have the setting correctly where it finds the hotspots anything 200 yd it's going to find it.. Something I just purchased running into its paces but the things that I'm finding it's amazing for the price point. I own 3 night vision scopes . A PVS14 in white phosphorus That's $2400 right there . And a Is ATN Thor LT 4x8 And it is kicking the c*** out of It thermal wise . For spotting and then getting onto it with your night vision it's the way to go 100% for entry product

Some of the higher end digital thermal is actually very good. Sig now makes a digital thermal riflescope, and there's a few other companies doing so as well. Digital thermal has the advantage of being able to gather from a much wider electromagnetic spectrum than digital nightvision so it doesn't suffer the slow amplification and processing times, and will spot targets in a zero light environment. And, as you can see, even with this cheap stuff you still have enough contrast to see terrain and other things crucial to navigation. So we're right on the cusp of a revolution, where traditional nightvision will be superseded, at least in civilian use, by much more versatile digital thermal for less money. Higher end digital thermal also doesn't really care how far away the target is; if it's emitting heat, you WILL see it even if it's not visible on traditional nightvision.

Try the 388 12 micron model it ain't half bad and seems to work where the 160 fails also good in complete darkness only downside is LCOS display is not weather rated for extreme cold but I live in Texas only one week this year it might of been a problem at half the price of pvs-14 one can see in no light
