Can you build your own battery from scrapped Mustang Mach-E modules? How easy is it to reuse batteries from scrapped cars? Learn in this video what it takes to disassemble, test and reconfigure batteries for an EV conversion. What would LG say if they saw their modules like that?
With our method we could double the battery module voltage from stock 30V up to 60V by reconfiguring the electrical connections. With that, we can get to a 400V battery pack with only 7 modules compared to the 12 modules found in a Mustang Mach-E.
NOTE: This video is for entertainment purposes only. Working on HV batteries required training.
You can buy stock LG modules from scrapped Mustang Mach-E here: batteryhookup.com/products/lg...

Wohoo, our fist battery module is DONE! 6 more to go 😂 We are building the battery box in the coming days plus connect all the individual BMS units with the VCU - the E-motor is already installed in the Jeep (see upcoming video) - we are making huge progress - because - we are invited to SEMA!! Only 2 more months until then 😂

FYI: AEM's Battery Management System is not on the market yet, as of October 15, 2022. Both P/N 30-8401M(aster) and P/N 30-8401S(atellite). When released they MUST be used the AEM's Vehicle Control Unit. It will not work as a standlone BMS.

Great work and amazing project. Author, please swap the words parallel with series and vise versa in your first 3 minutes video. Parallel allows you to double the current and keeps voltage same and series doubles the voltage and keeps current same. Keep up the great work.

It might be late but I have a question regarding battery pack, I have seen manufacturers using 48V modules and then connect them in series parallel to get required voltage and power but I would like to know what would be the problem in building a 400V module (100 cylindrical cells in series) then connect these modules in parallel to get required Ah rating to build a battery pack?
@johnpoldo8817
@johnpoldo8817 Жыл бұрын
Wow, the battery re-configuration is very labor intensive. Are you doubling the voltage on each module only or entire pack for an 800v system? Did you discard & recycle the weak (red in spreadsheet) cells? Why did you need a kitchen oven for power test?
@ElectrifiedVeronika
@ElectrifiedVeronika Жыл бұрын
It is, I cannot recommend this process - reusing or repurposing batteries is HARD with these types of mosudles. We are doing that for each of our modules - in total we will get to a 400V system with 6 modules - that's the latest status :-) We are storing the "red" cells right now and once we are done we bring it to a recycler. We use a kitchen oven in order to be on the safe side for our cell testing. If you just do low current charge and discharge tests you should be fine anyways but we also do high power cycling for parameterizing some models and just to be on the safe side, in case something happens during the test, we have the thermal event happening in the oven and our garage will be ok.

I am in the early days of doing some homework for an ev conversion, never really thought about reconfiguring the batteries the way you did, given me some ideas. Your load is a Kunkin KP184 that can pull 40A, your graphic says the test is a constant 40A for about 13000 seconds or well over 3 hours for a test (143Ah/40A is also over 3h.. :) ), per cell. I also see that you have 4 of these units. Do you have 4 so that you can test 4 at the same time or could you put say 2 of the loads in parallel and draw 80A for half the time and measure that? 80A is a lot of draw. Either way testing every battery in a pack is going to take a long time.. ;)
@ElectrifiedVeronika
@ElectrifiedVeronika Жыл бұрын
Hey that’s cool, which car do you convert? Yes we got 4 to parallel them for a high current test on the module, but the software we are using can only control one at a time. For the cell tests so far with the 40 A constant we do 4 tests at the same time which yea takes some time but for us we also find that the cells on each module are very similar so we only do the long test for 4 cells per module. More on that in future videos ☺️

@@ElectrifiedVeronika Haven't decided on a car yet, lot of variations to consider. 7 batteries * 16 cells per battery *3+hr per cell = weeks of effort, no wonder you went parallel load. Look forward to future videos, keep up the great work..
