Vehicle communication overview for our electric Jeep. This is our way to make the electric components that we added in this conversion talk to each other to enable safe and efficient operation. We chose CAN communication and we are setting up the entire wiring system starting with the AEM VCU300 and two main CAN lines to the Keypad, Battery Management System, Inverter, On-Board Charger and Displays.
1) VCU from AEM EV: www.aemev.com/products/ev-veh...
2) AEMCal Calibration Software: www.aemev.com/products/softwa...
3) BMS from AEM EV (coming soon)
4) Keypad from AEM EV: www.aemev.com/products/8-butt...
5) Dashboard from AEM EV: www.aemev.com/products/cd-dig...
6) Batteries are LG Chem Battery Modules from Scrapped EVs (they are reassembled for the Jeep to fit in shape and voltage). You can find modules like this here: batteryhookup.com/products/lg...
7) Electric Motor, Inverter from Cascadia Motion:
www.cascadiamotion.com/produc...
8) On-board Charger and DC/DC Converter from Cascadia Motion: www.cascadiamotion.com/produc...

It took me a long time to get this basic understanding about CAN communication and what we want to do with this Jeep. Let me know how you plan to do that or already did! 😊🔋🙌

doing great! having designed CAN routings myself, learning to understand how CAN works and how to program the VECU to communicate and recognize all of the devices on the bus is whole other level (that's what the software engineers are for!)

Thank you so much for this! This gives me some ideas of how CAN physical layer actually works and what needs to be considered on its nodes! I am hoping to do an ubiquitous "FWD ICE stack" (engine+ autotransmission+ differential) swap with a "FWD EV stack" (inverter+ controller+ motor+ reducer+ differential) from an old LEAF to a dead Chevy Uplander minivan. But I may not finally do that as I learn more. So thank you for everything!

So glad that this content is useful for others and helps you understand things better. I am learning it myself hehe and whenever I learned something new I feel like "why not share it" haha. Please reach out to me (electrifiedveronika@gmail.com) and we can discuss further. We just got 2 Nissan leaf motor/inverter/on board charger shopped for some upcoming conversions so might have an interesting update for you!

Always enjoy your videos. Yes CAN Communication takes some time to understand. I remember in early 2000's we starting doing CAN diagnostic training with our automotive technicians using new scan tools. It does take extensive training and experience to be an expert in CAN diagnostics. Great unrehearsed ending. Look forward to the next video. Thank-you.

Hi Richard, great to read your comment and hear about your experience! And about the ending, that was a unique ending, a blooper and a little accident at the same time 😂

Thank you for your KZfaq videos. They are very informative. I'm a controls engineer and well versed with using bus communications over TCP/IP. I am preparing to set up CANbus tools to specifically diagnose and develop EV solutions. The challenge of reverse engineering newer vehicles is a barrier to quickly converting the many ICE vehicles on the road today. Thank you again

I converted my first car 30 years ago and it was so easy at that time . As time has gone by it has gotten more and more complicated I've converted over 100 cars and its now to the point where it's too complicated for me to do at least this last job seems to be. I got a Zonic motor from a company i won't name with The AEM evc200 . Ive not been able to get much information on setting it up and looking through utube videos while waiting for somebody from said company to get back to me . The customer that im working for is not happy to say the least.

Great video! I think the way you are going with custom CAN system makes sense. I imagine that trying to re-use the old wiring loom would be a nightmare...

We thought that too although I initially wanted to go that route 🤣 let’s see what we can do for the next one to reuse more of what already exists ☺️ suggestions or recommendations? ☺️

@@ElectrifiedVeronika I suppose you could just strip the actual core wiring out of the harness and re-use that, if it's simply twisted pair, then solder resistors on each end...

Super fun to see your thought process, even the analog dials like the tachometer can be used for something else, like an amp meter. You could control a servo showing the amps with a microcontroller reading the current sensor. Impressive you took out all that wire, maybe not the easiest path but so many cool options now
@ElectrifiedVeronika
@ElectrifiedVeronika Жыл бұрын
Thanks! We actually have a way to control the stock cluster directly from the VCU. So we can do really fun things. Like you suggest we are planning to using the tachometer as a battery power/energy needle so you can see when you regenerate and use energy. So much fun!

Very informative video! Just randomly, the VCU looks pretty much identical to a Bosch EDC16 diesel ECU, I wonder if they've brought a bunch of enclosures off Bosch and re-purposed them.

Hi Veronika! Your series on this EV conversion is very well documented and explained, loving it. I myself am getting an education in university to become an EV technician. My question is: What are your resources for learning all of this stuff?

Thank you so much for your feedback - I am really glad it is helpful for you! I am working in the EV industry as a consultant and have built up my expertise in batteries. Many things in that conversion are new to me too, but together with my husband and by reaching out to the companies and other people that have done similar things we try to find solutions.

Well I would say, the Jeep is one of the most complicated cars to convert. Why? It has selectable 2/4WD, if you have just 2WD you have more options for the selection of your parts and the electric powertrain. Then it is a very small vehicle, so there is not much space for batteries. A vehicle with a biiig “frunk” that does not need to go off-roading would be easier. In terms of controlling, the older the better I would say. And again the whole off roading takes it to another level. So there is many cars that would be easier. Good question and I want to make a video about it after we are done with the Jeep with all the learnings ☺️

Great video, as always! Do the inverter and motor communicate with each other discretely such that you do not need to have the motor on a CAN bus?

I love the VCU 200 but I have some beef with aem pushing super hard for their entire ecosystem Like for instance the keypad really isn't necessary, the VCU has raw pinouts for PRND. The PDU's are cool but a lot of the jeeps original 12v stuff will still work just fine. I could see maybe one pdu for coordinating stuff like cooling pumps and some valves

@Electrified Veronika I had an update from 3 of Ev Conversion professionals, and they informed me that my Jeep conversion could cost from 50k to 150k. They average that my Jeep EV conversion would be a challenge because of it's mass, volume, and features.
