I’m very new to the world of the SBC and chose the 8gb RAM Raspberry Pi 4 and the Argon One M.2. I even have the same Kingston A400 240Gb SSD. I have nothing to compare it to but I have to say I’m really pleased this set up, thus far I've not found it lacking in any way for the purpose I bought it. Even though I've overclocked CPU to 2GHz and GPU to 750 I have never been at over 56°C, but I don’t do any gaming and stick to basic computing on it. You’ve now given a good reason to buy another.

Nice to see OMV being looked at. I use it on a HP deskelite Sff 4th gen I5. I mainly use docker containers, but if you allow testing plugins, then you can use a new KVM plugin. The developer is starting to try and get Arm stuff working. But its nice to be able to spin up VMs from OMV. Looking forward to see what happens

Hello Jay. I have the same setup,. but booting from the M.2 which increases the I/O speed and boot time dramatically (...and I also don't trust SD-Cards that much hehe...). In case someone doesn't know how to: 1. do the standard SD-Card setup, but don't attach the bottom of the case with M.2 or USB3-Adapter for now. Just leave the case open and put it aside. So, you start the RPi without the USB3 adapter and without the bottom of the case attached, but with the SD-Card in. 2. Start the Pi 3. when started up, attach the bottom of the case and the USB3 adapter. Now the system will find the new M.2. in /dev/ 4. use the command: lsblk to find the device name of the M.2, where we want to write the whole system from SD-Card on it. Let's say, it's /dev/sdb Also, note the name of the system, the SD-Card. 6. Now we just copy the whole system from the SD-Card to the M.2: dd bs=4M if=/dev/NameOfSystemDrive of=/dev/NameOf_M.2_Drive status=progress So for example: dd bs=4M if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb status=progress In case the command is not working, double check that you have the capital "M "in the bs=4M part. This takes a while. When done, shut down the RPi and remove the SD-Card. Put the case & USB3 adapter together and start the RPi with lightspeed ;-) That's it, happy weekend and thanks for your great work Jay, I learn a ton from your book and videos.

Thank you for posting that! It's been on my list for a while to test out booting from an SSD on a Pi. I was under the impression that there was some firmware trickery required, but it doesn't appear to be the case based on your steps. I'll give that a shot at some point soon.

Thank you for a good practical project. I recommend that you also try to configure the Raspberry Pi to boot from the SSD and there by eliminating the need to access the SD card inside the Argon case. The SSD boot can be configured from the raspi-config utility directly.

Very clear and well made video. Question. If I follow these steps to create my NAS, will I be able to install PLEX server on it? My current NAS (QNAP) which I am going to be retiring for this one has been acting as out home PLEX server and we are very used to accessing our videos this way. Also, will we be able to access (read/write) from our windows computers to the external drive I am connecting to the Rpi via USB 3.0? We will need to be able to transfer our photos and other files to it as well. Thank you!

The bottom part could be expanded to a double drive with mirrored drives, argon or other could do it, any m2 expanders ? Powering it may be the bottleneck, but if bottom shell is replaced that could have a powerjack for the drives(+pi). Sd card can be removed if you activate usb boot.

Not everyone has the others around. One should also have at least 3 copies of the data, 2 local and 1 offsite. That is...if you care about your data. The main NAS should backup to a 2nd on the network...then to the offsite maybe 1 per week etc

You're better off with Synology. I know, it is not OMV, but in production sites, OMV Falls short on features. I tried a lot of solutions UNRAID, freeNAS or Synology gave the best easiest solution regarding AD
@LearnLinuxTV
@LearnLinuxTV 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with the Synology comment, OMV wouldn't be my first choice for Active Directory either. I'm sure you can get it to work, but if anything changes on the Microsoft side and OMV hasn't been updated to match, I'd be a bit nervous. That's a hypothetical situation, but when dealing with a solution from a large company like Microsoft, it often makes sense to use a solution from a company with the funds to invest in it and collaborate with Microsoft. I hope you can get it to work though.
@TA-nc9lx
@TA-nc9lx 3 жыл бұрын
@@LearnLinuxTV this is mainly for my homelab. I didn't want to buy a synology just yet since I had a Pi4 and some SSD's lying around. @zeloslp2
@zeloslp2 3 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. You cannot install Proxmox because it only works on x86 architectures (maybe on others but definitely NOT on Arm which is what the Raspberry Pi uses). You can, however, try to install vmware ESXI instead, that should work, there are quite a few tutorials out there. You should keep in mind, though, that this requires a lot of RAM and will need efficient cooling, better active than passive. The Argon1 case does feature a fan, but it is controlled via a script that I would not know how to install next to ESXI, which doesn't mean it's not possible, but requires some further research or programming, which you should have in mind depending on how proficient you are with hypervisors and Linux.

Jay, I was waiting for this video... As promised from the livestream it was Awesome to the MAX... :-D I'm not a PI user nor do I know much to about using them. I do watch video about them but when it comes to making them work and the coding I'm at a loss. No matter how many videos I watch nada, zip! :-( Maybe if I get one, the code issue will click in my head... ??? Been on Linux for 4+ years and I can do some bash scripting and get by with that. I do want to learn, my head is just now willing... :-( With that said, This might be something I can do. I have a Ubuntu media server and backup server made out of some old 2 core Mobos and they do work great, there is always room for more. LOL I do have a question...? Can you also use a external USB drive as storage and running backups??? While warp speed is always good as power usage goes. Sometimes Implus drive and less power consumption is desirable... :-D They both get ya there, just one is faster and cost more on the electric bill... LOL Like you my office is toasty in the winter and hot in the summer and have to run my window A/C colder... Anyay Jay I was excited to see this video and will consider it as a fantastic option! You did not disappoint! Thanks for the video! LLAP

Hi, I’m new to this channel. I find it quite interesting. Although this video is one month old already, I wanted to share what I did different my OMV install for my rPi4. So I did not want to use the SD card as I have had one die on me in another instance. I also did not want to use 2 physical disks. A trick I remembered using back in the 90’s, while building computers with my dad (he had an IBM clone computer shop back in the day). Since controllers and disks were SOoooo expensive and unreliable, we would split the disks in logical partitions (primary and secondary) tricking the OS into thinking there were 2 drives. Mounting them would give a C: and D: drive. Anyway, I tried this on my USB SSD on ma other computer (also Linux :) created file systems on both partitions (ext4 for both) flashed the OS on the first partition, installed the USB drive in the Pi, and voila.... installed following the usual steps. And, well enough, the second partition was mountable from the GUI the same as if it were a second drive. Worked perfectly :)

You can install the "flashmemory plugin" on openmediavault which creates a ram disk for all your logs and tempoary files. Since the SSD is used as storage this should not really be a problem :)

@@Felix-ve9hs I meant the use case where the SD-card also would be the storage (since the SSD was considered an optional part). I would be fine using the sd-card as os drive. Good tip with the flash memory plugin, sound's like it could make a large difference in sd-card reliability.

@@PatrikKron oh okay I misunderstood :) I also would not want to use the SD-Card for OS and Storage, not even in a RAID mirror

It's also possible to use the sd card only for the bootmanager and place the root partition on a usb drive (stick or 2.5"/3.5" usb ssd/hdd). Did this once with raspbian.

I think they missed a trick in not building-in a USB-3 hub, giving you additional ports on the base-unit ...

In Europa you can find a i3 /celeron NUC under €125. Not the fastest, but a more rubust choice for NAS or Domotica server.

Honestly solutions like OMV are not really super secure expecially if someone expose it to the public IP...

I think it's best to consider all NAS devices as insecure and not expose it to the public Internet unless you absolutely have to.

I like this, but I wish someone would make an enclosure that works with USB external hard drives in an elegant way. Plus, there's the issue of redundancy. This is great if you're just curious, but a single SSD does not a NAS make.

Quite nice case, but that USB plug looks so bad and it looks it can interfere with to upper port too as that adapter seems to take bizarrely much space? Also serious dislike for not having access to SD-card slot.

I can see your point there... ...It is a NAS technically, but RAID should definitely be added when you can. But you can also sync it to another device with RAID in addition.
