I will show you how to install a wood burning stove, change the oil in the gas generator, and install the tiles.
The sauna is covered with dead harvested cedar with the frame formed by a metal culvert. The ends are sided with ash wood harvested from a tree nearby cut to 1/2 inch thickness on a portable sawmill. Insulation is off cast, so bought for cheap, and the studs are from discarded pallet wood. Subscribe for part 2 where we work on the inside of the sauna.
I will show you how to build a sauna!

"Self-Reliance" is an 1841 essay written by American transcendentalist philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. It contains the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes: the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow his own instincts and ideas. This channel will approach self reliance from a modern perspective. and will focus on various build projects using modern amenities, and tools to build a completely self reliant lifestyle.

For safety: maybe consider wearing a leather apron while welding. Colon cancer has a higher occurence with welders because their abdomen gets exposed more to penetrating uv waves from the welding head. #safetyfirst

I built a sauna with my old man once. We had an issue where our eyes would start stinging as we went about using it. We narrowed down possible causes to poor air quality. We intalled a proper air inlet and all stinging ceased. I can highly recommend it. Cheers!

I like the shape and look of this sauna! I still would put drain for easier cleaning and for the off running water when stove isn't hot enough. And ventilation! Just a quick tip for you Kevin. Most oil bottles have the throat of the bottle offset for a reason. Try pouring with the "wide" side of the bottle pointed down. You'll have to tilt the bottle at a greater angle and its much easier to control the flow. Kind Regards ~ Science

As a Finn its really weird seeing a sauna without a drain, usually we have em is to ease the cleaning of the sauna and since you throw water on the rocks usually as well so if the sauna stove(kiuas) isnt hot enough it does not leave pool on the floor. Great vid tho as always :)

@@ModernSelfReliance The stove will be very hot so it will do damage on the floortiles. I suggest to get some sort of heatshield under the stove. Also the drain is important because not all the water isnt going to go to the kiuas.

I suggest you put a tank on the chimney or on the side of the sauna. Thats how you get yourself boiling hot water to mix with cold to have a shower. The wood on the wall and the door are going to rot pretty soon unless you put a drain.

Great work Kevin, keep it coming. In our saunas, the high humidity 100%RH at 90 C and lots of splashing with with water while bathing is not a big problem since we build them differently. Instead of making the countryside saunas watertight, we make them with air gaps and a water drain or two on the floor so that water will always escape. It is critical that after bathing, the sauna is well ventilated, else it will rotten very fast. It is a common practice to light up a small fire in the oven to dry it afterwards. Enjoy!

Anyone can through money at a project, but real pioneers created their own solutions with whatever resources they had access to at the time. I also like the fact that you say to yourself “I don’t know when or where I’m going to use this material, but I’m sure one day it will be of use so I’ll take it”. If that’s not forward thinking, I don’t know what is.

This Sauna turned out great, BUT, it definitely will require a good amount of combustion air. That flue pipe is constantly drawing air out of the structure and as a result the structure and humans will require a source of fresh air. You may be able to cut a couple of ducts at the lower level of the rear wall and run some ducting along the firebox, then terminate at the door of the firebox. Make sure that the snow level never blocks the inlet! Of course you could leave the main door ajar but that isn't going to feel comfy to anybody using the sauna. A cold air draft across the floor surface will not keep you very warm, but it wont asphyxiate you either.
