i use that same feeder on our Koi Farm. Its a great feeder, lots of adjustments to it. Its going to shoot the food out into the pond like 50 feet. I would stock the fathead minnows way ahead of the other fish. I would also stock some water daphnia (they eat green water) and skud shrimp (eat detritus at the bottom of the pond). These are an excellent live food source for smaller fish.

The feeder on the point. You may want to mount it on a concrete pad or a couple 4x6’s. After filling it with a couple hundred pounds of feed. It may sink into the soft ground.
@g.tylertompkins4287

Dude the legs on that big feeder are gonna sink into the clay, as soon as the ground gets saturated. especially being full of feed. You might consider putting a little concrete slab or some sort of foundation for it. Either way, the pond looks like a slice of heaven.

Shane, would you recommend that they put the large feeder (not on the dock) on four cinder blocks? Seems to me that once it's fully loaded, it will be heavy enough to slowly sink into the ground, particularly with heavy rain softening the ground.
@petermgruhn
@petermgruhn 2 жыл бұрын
[water] I wondered about that. He opened up this metal flap and said "the battery goes in here". Where all the water is? Maybe it's hidden enough? "Right here on the wet drippy door with the wind whipping and..." Oh.
@ShaneJMcNair
@ShaneJMcNair 2 жыл бұрын
@@mcinshadley I don't think it will be an issue. If it is, I would recommend 2x8 treated wood blocks, so you can drill them for the stakes to go through. You have to stake feeders down or Wildlife will tip them over. Notice in the video, the feet had stakes through them. He didn't mention that.

5:20 - 5:40 White bird is a Great Egret and other smaller shorebird is a Black Necked Stilt. Stilts are harmless to pond critters, but the Great Egret, like the Great Blue Heron, can devour bass. Your pond, depending where in Alabama you are, may attract: *Threats (to bass)* : Great Blue heron Great Egret American White pelicans Anhinga Osprey *Non-threats* : Snowy & Cattle egrets Green, Tri-colored, and Night herons Spoonbills Cormorants Wood storks And of course, you’re in Alabama, so there’s always the potential of an alligator popping up in your pond.

true however the Great white egret is on the conservation watch list in the us, due to its heavy hunting in the late 19th/20th century, so he can't really shoot them, it looks like it's a male possibly looking for a future nesting ground or food source if you want the heron to stay they nest in reeds

As a (very) amateur astronomer, I loved that time lapse of the night sky. You can see Orion come up over the horizon @10:10 (look for the 3 bright stars of his belt. He's sideways facing up here). And if you look toward the top edge of the screen straight up from Orion, you'll see a cluster of bright stars. That's the Pleiades cluster, a.k.a. the 7 Sisters. It looks amazing through a telescope, or even binoculars. Aim a telescope at the middle stars in Orion's sword and you'll see the Orion Nebula. I thought I was just jealous of your awesome pond, now I'm jealous of your clear, dark skies too! Thanks for sharing. This has been fun to follow. Cheers!

It's actually a battle of the greats! A great egret and a greater yellowlegs. The bobbing/teetering motion of the shorebird is a classic yellowlegs/spotted sandpiper/solitary sandpiper behavior. The long bill, at least twice as long as the length of the head, narrows it down to the greater yellowlegs. One of my favorite shorebirds! I just love watching them actively chase minnows in the shallows!

Before the pond fills, have you considered the installation of an aerator to assist with algae control in summer months? I have seen septic tank aerators work wonders to improve pond health. Any thoughts on floating plants, pond bacteria, and maybe doubling up the minnow planting for a bigger pond ecosystem? Water plants would help out for bugs and all that and hiding spots for fry. Plant a lot of brooder golden shiners and wait a year to plant bass for maximum bait fish reproduction. The golden shiners get pretty big so if there's a couple hundred brooder sizes of them they'd avoid getting eaten by bass and bluegill for the first 2 years maybe. (If planted bass were 3-4")

Name the skunk "Eliot Ness" as he was a black and white always after Al Capone. Another great pond update, can't wait to see you stock the pond with fish 🎏🐟🎣

I’m pleased you moved the feeder to the side of the dock , it was an eyesore in the first location wasn’t it . I love your nocturnal wildlife films . The next video will hopefully show the pond full . As time passes the ponds edge will naturalize with various waters edge growth I expect , and will be an ever evolving joy .

Id name it Fabreeze. From internet: "Skunks are highly beneficial to farmers, gardeners, and landowners because they feed on large numbers of agricultural and garden pests. They eat plant and animal matter in about equal amounts during fall and winter, but eat considerably more animal matter during spring and summer when insects, their preferred food, are more available. They seem to prefer grasshoppers, white grubs, beetles, and crickets. In autumn, skunks consume berries and other vegetative matter. Field and house mice are regular and important items in the skunk diet, particularly in winter. Rats, cottontail rabbits, and other small mammals are taken when other food is scarce."

So i know this is an artificial pond and youre going to be feeding the fish with these machines. But are you planning on building up an ecosystem in the pond? Water plants? Freshwater moluscs? Freshwater shrimp? Minnows? Anything like that?

We had a skunk in our backyard for a while and named her Aroma, I think that could be a good name for yours too. Or maybe Aroamer because he will be roaming in and out of your video. 😂 My grandfather built lakes around his house years ago, long before I was born, so I have enjoyed watching your lake take shape. Thank you 😊

I use the same feeders on my pond they work great my only beef with them as with all feeders is some times the spinner plate can clog and then you’re not feeding fish until you notice. Also I would silicone around the feed window as that’s the only place I’ve had water enter. Skunk names (Oreo, Pepper, or Marshmallow) I’ll be interested to see if your pond settles or if you’ll have to add gypsum.. you can test this by filling up jars of water taken from different spots around the pond and letting them sit for a day or so. If they clear up you’ll be great! If not start looking in to additive to bind to the clay particles.
