You might want to watch the oak on the island. Whenever you plant a tree surrounded by clay and put potting soil ... you create a 'bowl' and water cannot seep into the clay fast enough, the hole fills up with water and drowns the root ball and the tree dies. If you can re-plant the tree by digging a hole twice the width and depth and - IMPORTANT - mix the potting soil with clay equally and replant. The tree has about an eighty five per cent chance of the roots being able to penetrate the clay. I live in Houston with my property built entirely on clay. A landscaper friend told me how to plant trees. I have planted (29) trees on my property - mainly nuttal oaks with live oaks and crepe mertals - they all survived - going on 25 years. Love the videos and keep up posting about the pond forever. Thanks

I would add some tree saver tubes such as ones from mossy oak native nursery or the cheaper route would be to get some chicken wire and staple to some small wooden stakes. Especially with the rut about to start up. Those young trees being in the open will be magnets for new rubs and scrapes.

That oak hole looked rather smooth on the sides. Be careful to rough up the sides of the hole, otherwise the clay will act like a pot and constrict the roots of the oak. Also a good idea is if you must bring in new soil, to mix some of the clay into it, so the roots don't get shock from the change from one soil to another.

I’m worried your trees are going to have a hard time. Here’s why: Your hole needs to be a lot wider and less deep. Also, you need to mix in something like pine bark soil conditioner with that clay to help aerate it and promote drainage, not any garden or potting soil. I imagine those trees are already root bound from those containers. You essentially created another pot to put them in with your holes. The roots will have nowhere to go and will continue to wrap around the tree strangling it:. If that doesn’t kill them, they’ll drown. Those holes are going to settle and become concave to the ground around it.. Water is just going to collect there. Plant it high and it won’t die. Most tree roots are in the top 18” of soil. You need get your holes wider, mix in the soil conditioner with your native soil and also tease the roots to get them growing out: I’ve planted in clay my whole life and have learned all this the hard way. I love your channel and anxiously await your updates each week. No one likes an armchair quarterback, but I know I’m right in this and don’t want to see your trees fail. Rammer Jammer.

Air pruning is also essential. The Forestry Service, decades ago, discovered the benefits of planting seedlings in fabric pots as apposed to plastic ones. Seedlings planted in plastic pots tended to grow a tap root that wrapped around the inside of the pot continuously which is what is meant by "root bound". Fabric pots allowed the tap root poke through the bag exposing it to air. A tree that has its taproot air pruned, in other words simply exposed to the air, will send a signal to the tree that it needs to make more roots from its main tap root. These results can and do happen with the new roots also being exposed to air. The benefits are obviously more roots. In practice this greatly improved the mortality rate of seedling trees planted by the Forestry Service. Best of luck to you. Thanks for the great content.

I just noticed how much woodchip you have around the base of the oaks, in order to prevent root and stump rot pull the woodchip back by around 6 inches from the base and make rings. You will have a much higher chance of success. Also hard wood is alot harder for the micro bacteria in the soil to break down and add the nutrients you want in the soil. Also get some tree stakes and stake them up from three sides to help strengthen the trees.

Bama, I do not claim to know much about much, but you may want to look further into the distance you planted the oak trees from the pond. In my experience, oak roots can spread impressively far from the trunk and they are capable of lifting and cracking cement. I am concerned the roots could penetrate your clay liner once they mature and spread out.

Nuttall oaks produce few surface roots and can be planted more closely to sidewalks, pavements and buildings than some other oak tree varieties. Nuttall oaks are medium to large trees that can grow up to 100 feet in height. The crown of the tree can spread to 80 feet and is rounded in shape with a moderate density and medium texture.

When planting a tree, especially in heavy clay, it's best to dig the hole a lot wider, and deeper, than you need and initially pour in a lot of water (to moisten everything). Back fill it with a soil/compost mix to the correct depth, tease out some of the roots from the spiral root ball, position the tree then fill the hole with more soil/compost mix and firm it down with the heel of your boot. This gives the roots the best possible chance of establishing themselves. Also, the tree should be staked with a wooden stake of about 2" diameter. The stake should be driven in at an angle of about 45 degrees and attached to the tree, a few feet up from the ground, using a rubberized (stretchy) tree-tie. This supports the tree in high winds but allows enough movement for the roots to strengthen. The stretchy tie prevents damage to the tree as it grows, but should be occasionally checked and loosened as required. A local tree grower once staked a tree as detailed above, and another identical tree with a vertical stake and 4 ties along the length. In just 5 years the tree with the angled stake was twice the diameter of the other and looked a much better, healthier, specimen. It's all about establishing and strengthening the roots.

From what I understand the trees are not planted in clay. When he dug the pond, he didn't find clay, so he had them bring it in to line the bottom of the pond. He also said at one time he had the dirt tested and even limed it. His ground should be good, but he still should have done what you said when planting the trees.

The 45° angle is to stop the stake from stabbing the rootball. 2nd tree was damaged in the rootball in my opinion👍

The raccoons love feasting on any kind of water banks. They're eating worms , mussels, crawfish, whatever they can find. They're not picky eaters. I would bet they live in a tree very near the pond. I love the videos! First time I've watched a series over a period of time like that in real time. Very interesting and fun.

Those tree holes aren't nearly big enough brother. Unless you widened them more than the shot where you had the planter in the hole. You def want to put some protection rings around those trees too (the deer are gonna rub on them if you don't and you'll be replanting them in no time) Also, that might be a bit too much water for a young oak out on the island considering the clay is going to hold so much water. Might've gone with a willow or other water loving tree. Everything looks great thought! You're gonna have a fantastic Spring here soon. Love the deer bait testing!

you might consider some blackberry bushes to plant right on the banks of the pond where when mature will allow for some afternoon shade, then try to get someo morning shade in as well, same large shade trees are real nice for fish ponds, willows to, then someo reeds, they love reeds for cover and spawning as well.. the frys need somewhere to hide while growing as other larger bass will eat them.. id just go find a pond with reeds and cat tails, then dig em up put em in 5 gallon buckets, fill with water, good to transport, they will expand in time at least get 20 square yards of reed cover.. try to harvest early spring or late fall and plant ASAP
